Getting away from control a freight train
on the Great Northern, 30 cars long, made
a mad dash down the mountain near Tyee
early this mozrning according to reports
received here. The train went into the ditch at
the conclusion of its run with the result three
men are missing. It is not known whether
they are buried in the debris or were thrown
off, or jumped, while the train was in motion.
Because of the wreck the great Northern
passenger business is today being routed via
the Northern Pacific from Spokane to Seattle.

with a truckload of apples on Highway 30
Saturday morning and he received a traffic

troubles. Kenneth H. Edwards, 32, ran
into the rear of a truck carrying a load of
apples, driven by Johnny Lynn Harris, 43,
of Yakima, Wash., on Highway 30 near Rew
Elevator, police said. Edwards’ vehicle was
lodged under the bed of the truck and the
two vehicles proceeded together down the
highway to a turnoff before they could be
freed. Edwards was cited for violation of the

The Umatilla County Commissioners
have informally agreed to be “sponsors” for
repair of a levee damaged by heavy runoff
last spring. But the commissioners are asking
that Ukiah residents form a water control
district to care for the Camas Creek drainage
in the future. Commissioners Bill Hansell
and Emile Holeman discussed repairing the
damaged levee with about 25 Ukiah residents
Tuesday. Representatives from the Corps of
Engineers, the Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife, the U.S. Forest Service and the
Umatilla Tribes also attended.
