1000s of rounds of
ammo stolen from
national park
EUGENE (AP) — The
National Park Service is
asking for the public’s
help in locating the person
responsible for stealing
thousands of rounds of
ammunition from a locked
building at Oregon’s
Crater Lake National
Park.
The Register-Guard
reported Thursday that
the park service says in
a news release the rifle
and pistol ammunition
was stolen from a
building near the park’s
headquarters.
The ammunition was
used as part of the park’s
law enforcement program.
It is unclear when the
theft took place.
The park service is
offering up to $1,000 for
information leading to the
conviction of whoever is
responsible for the theft.
Police arrest
two accused of
Trump-protest
vandalism
PORTLAND (AP) —
Portland police detectives
have arrested two young
men accused of damaging
businesses during
November’s post-election
riot in the Pearl District.
Sgt. Pete Simpson
says 19-year-old Elijah
Gerard was booked
into jail Thursday on
charges of riot, assault,
criminal mischief and
unlawful entry into a
motor vehicle. He’s
suspected of damaging a
restaurant, Chase bank and
a construction business,
as well as assaulting a
motorist.
Also arrested was
19-year-old David Lewis
Jr. He’s accused of causing
damage at Starbucks,
Federal Express and
another business. He was
booked on charges of riot,
criminal mischief and
failure to appear.
He also had two
outstanding warrants for
criminal trespass.
Simpson says detectives
got tips from the public
after photos and video
showed the men damaging
Pearl District businesses.

Judge: Activist guilty of interfering, won’t be punished
MEDFORD (AP) — An
Oregon woman who stopped
to observe troopers after they
stopped a black driver has
been found guilty of inter-
fering with a police officer.
Keely Meagan of Ashland
parked on the edge of Inter-
state 5 after noticing the
traffic stop in September,
reported The Mail Tribune.
Meagan, 55, said she was
concerned about the driver’s
safety because of nationwide
reports of police violence
against black men.
Jackson County Circuit
Judge David Hoppe found
Meagan guilty of the misde-
meanor interfering charge
Thursday and dismissed a
violation for illegal parking.
He said Meagan has a right to
observe police but shouldn’t
have stopped so close to a
highway interchange.
“You can continue to
do that in a safe area. That
wasn’t safe, and I think you
recognize that,” said Hoppe.
Deputy District Attorney
Jordan Bailey said he was
pleased with the guilty
verdict because Oregon
State Police have to manage
situations on I-5 that can be
very dangerous.
Meagan said she under-
stood the police officer’s
concern about the situation
after watching police video
of the incident. But she also
said during Wednesday’s
trial that she feels a duty to
stop every time she sees a
black driver pulled over by
police.
Meagan, who lost her
job as a driver’s education
instructor after being charged
in the incident, will face no
further punishment, Hoppe
ruled. He said he didn’t
consider her actions a case of
civil disobedience but lauded
the activist for her empathy.
Although there have been
no shootings of black people
by local law enforcement
officers, Meagan said she
has “witnessed a lack of
understanding on the part of
officers of the reality of black
people in this country and the
fear they have of being killed
for no good reason.”
According to testimony
during the trial, the driver
who was pulled over
admitted to having consumed
marijuana but passed field
sobriety tests. He was not
charged with a DUI but his
vehicle was towed because
he was driving without
insurance.

ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•Morrow County Sheriff’s Office
arrested Gary Dow Williams, 61, of
Plymouth, Washington, for felony driving
while revoked. The arrest came after
deputies responded to a call at 3:37 p.m.
about people trespassing on property on
California Lane, Irrigon.
•Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office
arrested Scott Louis Sullivan, 46, of
Umatilla, and Christian Faith Marshall,
33, of Hermiston, for first-degree burglary,
first-degree trespass, theft of services and
two counts of endangering the welfare of a
minor.
According to court records, Sullivan and
Marshall were not paying to live at 30470
Margaret Ave., Umatilla, and exposed two
minors to unlawful activity involving drugs.
Sullivan also has an ongoing criminal case
from 2016 for first-degree theft, felon in
possession of a firearm, polluting state
water with an animal carcass and more.
•Oregon State Police arrested an Elgin
man for drunken driving, and his three
passengers also were intoxicated.
Trooper Ryan Sharp at about 10:20 p.m.
stopped a Ford F350 pickup for failing to
drive within its lane on the eastbound side
of Interstate 84 near milepost 208 outside
Pendleton.
“As I walked to the vehicle,” according
to the trooper’s report. “I could hear the
clanking of multiple beer bottles as the
occupants attempted to hide them.”
The three passengers — Michelle Renee
Densmore, 37, of Elgin, Jennifer Ward, 36,
of Elgin, and vehicle owner Robert Francis,
40, of Troy — were visibly intoxicated,
according to state police, and the driver,
Justin David Sanders, 27, of Elgin,
“exhibited multiple indicators of impairment
as well.”
Sanders took a sobriety test, and the
trooper then arrested him for driving under
the influence of intoxicants and reckless
driving and booked him into the Umatilla
County Jail, Pendleton. His blood-alcohol
level was .15 percent, almost twice the .08
percent legal limit.
A tow company hauled off the pickup.
