Gary Mack Bonner was
born November 8, 1937,
in La Grande, Oregon, and
passed away January 29,
2017, in Milton-Freewater,
Oregon. Visitation will be
held from 10 to 1:30 on
Friday, February 3, 2017, at
Pendleton Pioneer Chapel,
Folsom-Bishop. A
graveside service
will follow at 3:00
p.m. at Olney
Cemetery.
He was raised
by his parents Lyle
and Sylvia Bonner
near
Joseph,
Oregon, on a dairy
farm along with
his brother Dale.
One of the things Bonner
he enjoyed the
most was fishing
on the Wallowa River; he
became very good at dry
fly fishing and later tied his
own patterns. Gary loved
the great outdoors and the
mountains. He loved to camp
with his family in the moun-
tains, and enjoyed sitting by
a campfire and listening to
the wind blow through the
trees. He loved watching the
weather systems that came
through, and the meaner the
better! He loved all animals
and enjoyed being one with
nature. Mushroom hunting
was another favorite of his.
He loved the timber and
looking at different trees and
always wondered what they
would say if they could talk.
He loved a cold brisk
morning sunrise, a warm
afternoon sunset, and the
wonder of it all. But most
of all, he loved his family:
his wife Shirley, twin
daughters Karrie and Terrie,
his son Gregory, and his
many grandchildren. His
favorite hobbies were wood-
working, raising a garden
and cooking. He put his
heart into everything he did,
sharing a bit of this life with
others. He enjoyed spending
time with his
beloved dog, Tilly,
whom he always
took on his errands
around town and to
the mountains to
chase gophers.
Gary was a
loyal employee of
Pendleton Grain
Growers for 35
years. He was a
member of the
Pendleton Baptist
Church
and
enjoyed fellowship with its
members. He always took
time to do special projects
for others.
Gary fought a tough
battle with cancer for the
past year and a half. His
family and friends will
dearly miss the enjoyment
of conversations with him,
his wisdom, knowledge and
caring.
Gary is survived by his
brother Dale (wife Corliss);
daughters Karrie Zacharias
(husband Don) and Terrie
Kennedy; son Gregory
Bonner (wife Brenda);
14 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his wife
Shirley and granddaughter
Amy.
Donations in his memory
may be made to Pendleton
Baptist Church in care of
Pendleton Pioneer Chapel.
Shirlee Georgia McGreer
Pendleton

Shirlee
was
born
September
29,
1935,
in
Redmond,
Oregon.
Her parents, Robert and
Margaret McGreer, lived in
Central Oregon and raised
sheep on their family ranch.
Butter Creek and Prairie
City were happy memories
in Shirlee’s heart.
Life
changed
for Shirlee and her
mother during the
years of World War
II. They moved
to Portland to live
with her grandpar-
ents, Raymond and
Georgia Brewster.
Shirlee
started
school at Laurel-
hurst Elementary McGreer
where
she
continued through
the sixth grade. Her passion
for music was encouraged
during these years. Piano
lessons and school choirs
delighted her.
In the early 1950s
Margaret and Shirlee moved
to Ione, Ore., after Margaret
and
Verner
Troedson
married. Shirlee joined in
many new adventures, like
cooking for harvest crews
and driving the farm pickup.
She attended the seventh
and eighth grades in Ione.
Shirlee returned to Port-
land for high school and
attended St. Helen’s Hall.
Friendships formed during
those years continued to
be special and reunions
important. She continued
her education at Whitman
College in Walla Walla,
Wash., and University of
Oregon where she earned a
master’s degree in guidance
and counseling. While at
Whitman Shirlee performed
with the Triple Trio and
presented concerts around
the Pacific northwest.
In 1960 Shirlee applied
and was accepted as a
classroom teacher for the
Department of Defense
Schools. Her first assign-
ment was Ankara, Turkey.
She continued her over-
seas career for 34 years.
She became a guidance
counselor in France and
after a number of years
became a special education
coordinator for students in
England. Travel adventures,
cultural opportunities and
families from many parts of
the world enriched her years
abroad.
In 1994 Shirlee moved
to Pendleton, Ore., after
retiring from her career with
the Department of Defense
Schools. Her parents retired
in Pendleton in 1972 after
selling their wheat ranch in
Ione, Ore. Shirlee as an only
child was needed to help
her parents in their senior
years. Pendleton has been a
good place to call home. She
met many interesting people
and found the area rich in
history, culture and four
distinct seasons. She soon
became proud to
be a part of Eastern
Oregon.
Soon
after
Shirlee settled in
Pendleton,
she
responded to a
newspaper
ad
for library aide
position. For the
next 10 years she
worked at the Pend-
leton City Library.
She enjoyed her
work and helping
visitors feel welcome to
the library. She especially
enjoyed helping young
readers find a favorite story.
Shirlee was a lifelong
Episcopalian, P.E.O. Chapter
B.J. sister, served on the
board of the Center for the
Arts, OES Guild member,
a member and officer in
the National Association of
Retired Federal Employees,
Altar Guild director at the
Church of the Redeemer, a
member of Current Litera-
ture Club, Sunday Morning
Care Center Service Group,
Pendleton Round-Up and
Hall of Fame volunteer
and docent at the Hall of
Fame Museum, and a loyal
University of Oregon Duck!
Shirlee died in Walla
Walla, Wash., on January 26,
2017, after battling cancer.
She is survived by dear
friends Creagh Hawes
and
Sylvia
Clawson,
P.E.O. Chapter BJ sisters,
the Kimsey family, and
neighbors and friends of
Pendleton.
Pioneer Chapel of Pend-
leton is coordinating the
arrangements for Shirlee.
Memorials in her honor and
memory may be donated
to P.E.O. Chapter BJ, the
Oregon East Symphony,
PAWS or any other Eastern
Oregon support organization
of your choice.
A Celebration of Life is
planned for Shirlee in the
spring of this year at Wards
Butte, Linn County, Ore.
The very love we have
for each other in Christ
brings deep sorrow when we
are parted by death. Jesus
himself wept at the grave
of his friend. So, while we
rejoice that one we love has
entered into the nearer pres-
ence of our Lord, we sorrow
in sympathy with those who
mourn.

Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at his
home. He was born Sept. 4,
1920, in MIlton-Freewater.
A funeral service will be
held Saturday, Feb. 4 at
3 p.m. at the First Baptist
Church in Milton-Freewater.
Private burial will be at the
Mountain View Cemetery
in Walla Walla. Munselle-
Rhodes Funeral Home in
