COVE — The Nixyaawii
Golden Eagles extended their
season-high win streak to eight
games on Friday night, as they
took down Cove 61-47 on the
road.
The Golden Eagles (11-4,
8-0 OOL) did have to overcome
a sluggish fi rst half to pull out
the win, as Cove held a 25-21
lead at halftime. But Nixyaawii
bursted out of the halftime break
and outscored Cove 25-12 in the
third quarter to take a 46-37 lead
and coasted to the win.
“We settled down there in the
third,” Nixyaawii coach Shane
Rivera said. “We picked up a
man-to-man defense there and
led to better looks offensively.
In the end, Cove was not quite
as deep as us and we kind of
wore them down.”
Mick Schimmel led Nixy-
aawii with 22 points, while
Chandler Case had 13 and
Deven Barkley had 11. The
trio also combined for all 25 of
Nixyaawii’s points in the third
quarter.

PORTLAND — Damian Lillard
scored 33 points, including 13
straight for Portland late in the fourth
quarter, and the Trail Blazers held off
the Memphis Grizzlies 112-109 on
Friday night.
Allen Crabbe
added 23 points
off the bench for
the Blazers, who
Memphis
have won three
straight for the fi rst
time since early
December. Mason
Plumlee had his

fourth

double in a row
with 13 points and
10 rebounds.
Marc Gasol, coming off a career-
high 42 points Wednesday in a
victory over Toronto, scored 32 for
the Grizzlies. Zach Randolph added
17 points and 13 rebounds.
Portland led by 18 in the fi rst half,
but the Grizzlies closed the gap in the
third quarter and the teams traded the
lead in the fourth.
In today’s game of basketball, so much emphasis is put
on the 3-point shot and coaches encourage players to take
any open look they get in hopes of gaining advantages
over their opponents. But the Pendleton Buckaroos do not
operate that way, and are a rare breed.
The Bucks are a throwback team,
if you will, as their strengths lie inside Girls Hoops
with a strong group of post players in
Maureen Davies, Kalan McGlothan
and Katie Bradt that lead the way of an
The Dalles
inside-out game plan. The Buckaroos
played to their strengths very well on
Friday night, as they toppled The Dalles
Riverhawks 60-48 in a key league
contest at Warberg Court.
The combo of Davies, McGlothan,
Pendleton
and Bradt combined for 32 points and
21 rebounds in the win, as The Dalles
struggled to slow the trio down.
“Inside is where were best at, and we
have three kids that we can go to any time we need them,”
Pendleton coach Kevin Porter said, “and The Dalles just
didn’t have the same level inside to stop us. I’m real prod
of the girls and it was great for us to get a win like that.”
Pendleton (6-6, 2-0 CRC) started the game fast off the
opening tip, racing out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the fi rst
quarter. Porter said that getting a good start was one of the
teams’ goals for the game.
“We’ve been trying to make sure we’re ready to play

Hamlin wins second luge title
When Erin Hamlin won her fi rst world
luge championship, someone in her
bursting-with-pride hometown decided
it would be fi tting to name an ice cream
sundae in her honor.
Memo to the residents of
Remsen, New York: It’s time
for another tribute.
Hamlin is now a two-time
world champion, after taking
the women’s sprint crown
Friday on the track in Igls,
Austria, just outside Innsbruck.
Hamlin
It’s the third world title in
USA Luge history, the fi rst in Europe, and
the fi rst gold for the Americans in a world
championships race since Hamlin prevailed
on her home track at Lake Placid in 2009.
Hamlin prevailed in 30.074 seconds, a
mere 0.009 seconds better than Switzer-
land’s Martina Kocher.

Cleveland chosen to host 2019
MLB All-Star Game
CLEVELAND (AP) — MLB Commis-
sioner Rob Manfred announced at a news
conference on Friday that Cleveland will
host the 2019 All-Star Game at
Progressive Field.
Cleveland last held the event
in 1997 at then-called Jacobs
Field, and also hosted the game
in 1935, 1954, 1963 and 1981 at
Municipal Stadium, which was torn down in
the 1990s.
The Indians will be the fi rst AL host since
Minnesota in 2014. The All-Stars will be in
Miami this year and Washington, D.C., in 2018.
The AL champion Indians have made
signifi cant changes to their downtown ballpark
since last hosting the All-Star game. Thousands
of seats have been removed and the club
has created better viewing for fans with the
installation of open social areas and bar rails.
