Bunco fundraiser
benefits women
HERMISTON — A
bunco fundraiser is planned
by Soroptimist International
of the Greater Hermiston
Area.
I Love Bunco is Tuesday,
Jan. 31 with the doors
opening at 6 p.m. at Desert
Lanes, 1545 N. First St.,
Hermiston. The cost is $10
(cash, check or Square
payment) at the door. The
event includes snacks, prizes
and silent auction baskets.
The local Soroptimist
club is part of an
international group that
promotes education and
leadership to transform the
lives of women and girls.
Money raised from the event
will go towards Live Your
Dream, which provides
education and training
awards for women.

Heppner Chamber of
Commerce’s Town &
Country Community Awards
Banquet.
The event is Thursday,
Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. at
the Morrow County

Tickets are $25 each, if
purchased prior to Feb. 6 —
then they increase to $30.
The evening will
include recognition of local
individuals and their support
for the community. The meal
features a prime rib dinner
prepared by chef Alvin
Liu of Gateway Café. In
addition, one lucky person
will have an opportunity to
win a piece of jewelry from

Bureau offers
scholarships
The Oregon Farm
Bureau Foundation for
Education is accepting
applications for two
scholarship programs for
the upcoming 2017-2018
academic year.
•Oregon Farm
Bureau (OFB) Memorial
Scholarships are available
to graduating high school
seniors planning to attend
an institution of higher
learning; current full-time
college students with a
high school diploma;
and Oregon home school
graduates with some
college coursework
completed.
Applicants must be
majoring in a field of study
related to agriculture or
forestry, or be the child
or grandchild of a current
voting member of Farm
Bureau in Oregon.
Ten to 12 OFB Memorial
Scholarships will be
awarded.
•The Oregon Farm
Bureau Associate Member
Scholarship, funded by
COUNTRY Financial,
offers $1,000 to one new or
continuing full-time student
at an institution of higher
learning.
Students can be pursuing
any major, but must come
from a family that has
an associate (non-farm)
membership with Farm
Bureau in Oregon and has
insurance from COUNTRY
Financial.
The deadline for both
scholarships is March
15, 2017. Scholarships

Veterans Stand Down.
Open to all veterans, the
homeless and other at-risk
individuals in the commu-
nity, the event helps connect
people with resources and
provides on-the-spot services.
Although it’s coordinated
by the Community Action
Program of East Central
Oregon, case manager Susie
Stuvland said the event is
made possible through all the
partner agencies that come
together to connect people
to services. It’s the seventh
event of its type, the second
time in Hermiston.
“In today’s world, it’s
good to link arms and work
together,” Stuvland said.

Connect is Saturday from 10
a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oregon
National Guard Armory, 900
S.E. Columbia Drive, Herm-
iston. Fiesta Foods is catering

said
it’s
important to get people
connected
to
available
services. Positive things can
begin to happen in people’s
lives when they have access
to resources, she said.
“We feel very strongly
that we provide a hand up
and not a hand out,” Stuvland
said.
Volunteers are still needed
for the event. Opportunities
include working at the regis-
tration table, guiding partici-
pants to specific services and
the exit station to hand out
toiletries, clothing and other
items.

MONDAY
12:04 a.m. - A woman called Hermiston police from the Good
Shepherd Medical Center emergency room, 610 N.W. 11th St.,
Hermiston, to report a stolen identity.
8:50 a.m. - A Pendleton mother reported her teen step-
daughter sent someone messages indicating suicidal thoughts.
8:56 a.m. - Hermiston police responded to the parking lot at
the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 1350 N. First St., after a caller reported
a young child alone in a vehicle. Police did not find the vehicle or
child.
10:19 a.m. - A woman on Southeast Second Street,
Pendleton, asked for an officer to come to the house because her
boyfriend refused to move out and threatened her and her family.
1:06 p.m. - A Pendleton caller on Southwest Perkins Avenue
reported the theft of prescription drugs from her house.
2:54 p.m. - Transients left a large mess at their camp near the
Umatilla Fish Hatchery, 73959 Riverview Lane, Irrigon, according
to a caller, who added a sheriff’s deputy should cite them for it.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
3:27 p.m. - Scammers received $600 from a Hermiston
woman, who asked to speak to an officer about the fraud.
7:19 p.m. - Morrow County Sheriff’s Office received a report of
a juvenile who could be suffering physical abuse at home.
9:42 p.m. - Pendleton police took a fraud report from the
victim.
10:59 p.m. - A caller asked Hermiston police for help after he
left his laundry in Main St. Laundry, 545 E. Main St., and could not
get it out.
