Page 6A COMMUNITY East Oregonian Thursday, January 19, 2017 Great Scots! Condon celebrates 20th annual Robert Burns Supper East Oregonian Bagpipers and drummers from across the Pacific Northwest will converge on Condon to help celebrate the area’s Scottish heritage. In its 20th year, the Robert Burns Supper includes toasts to Scotland’s renowned poet, a meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, Scotch eggs and shortbread, and a wee bit of Scotland’s single malt spirits, said Mac Stinchfield. The event is Saturday, Jan. 28 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Condon Elks Lodge, 117 S. Main St. Tickets are $17 each or $30 for a couple. The meal will be served at approximately 3 p.m., preceded by the haggis presentation, the recitation of “To a Haggis,” the Toast to the Ladies and the Reply to the Gentlemen. The after- noon program, Stinchfield said, generally ends about 5 p.m. If you go Saturday, Jan. 28 2 p.m. Condon Elks Lodge 117 S. Main Street Tickets: $17 / $30 for 2 “But the merriment has been known to continue on into the evening,” he added. The celebration includes a shortbread contest, including a youth category. The shortbreads serve as the meal’s dessert. And, all who enter the contest are rewarded for their efforts, Stinchfield said. The Niven family, who first came to this country in 1891 from Blairgowrie, Scotland, are noted during this year’s celebration. John Niven and Janet Campbell, who were married at Fossil in 1899, began a life of farming and raising a family. The couple had seven chil- dren — a son who died at a young age and six daughters, Marjorie Catherine, who married Richard Greiner, Jessie Stewart (Robert Schomp), Alice Rose (Ernest Scheiber), Clara Jane (Buck Waggoner), Lillie Edythe (George Schomp) and Laura Mae (Bob Rohrbach). The children of the Greiners included Richard, Ferne, Fred, Tom and Glenn. Descendants of the Marge and Richard Greiner family still live in the area — Tom and Ann Greiner of Condon and Glenn and Bonnie Greiner of Hermiston. The Robert Burns Supper began near the 100th anni- versary of the formation of the area’s first Caledonian Society. The event is held on the Saturday nearest to the Jan. 25 birthday of Robert Burns.
