SPORTS East Oregonian Page 2B Tuesday, January 17, 2016 Prep Roundup TigerScots beat Mustangs to win league openers East Oregonian ATHENA — The Weston-McEwen TigerScots won their league opener by grinding out a 53-49 win against the Heppner Mustangs on Saturday night. Heppner started the game with everything going its way, driving the lane and getting in the paint at will and finding open guys along the perimeter enough to hold a 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. But from that point on, Weston-McEwen slowly chipped away at the lead. The TigerScots (8-5, 1-0 CBC) tied the game at 49-49 with under one minute left to play before Ethan Reger scored the go-ahead basket and Quanah Picard sank two free throws with just seconds left on the clock to seal the win. “We made some good adjustments in the second half and responded well to (Heppner’s) defensive changes,” Weston-McEwen coach Brian Pickard said. Garrett Hungerford nailed four 3-pointers and scored 16 points for Weston-McEwen, while Shaw Broncheau and Brett Speed each had 12. Logan Grieb led Heppner (8-4, 0-2) with 18 points and four 3-pointers and Nikalos Dias Martins had 13.
