BERLIN (AP) — German media say a train conductor
called police after spotting a naked man with a knife in one
of the train’s restrooms, where officers found something
hairy going on.
Public broadcaster ZDF reported Tuesday that the
22-year-old man was engaged in an “intimate shave” when
police intervened at Duesseldorf’s main train station.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the report to German
news agency dpa, saying the man had been “quite
annoyed” by the interruption and only dressed himself
reluctantly.
While shaving in train restrooms isn’t illegal, the man
failed to produce a valid ticket and was therefore removed.
Dpa quoted police saying the man told officers he
elected to groom himself on the train because he wasn’t
welcome at home.

The state’s chief prison
official assured city leaders
here Tuesday that Eastern
Oregon Correctional Insti-
tution will not become the
state’s sex-offender prison.
However, Fred Pearce,
who last week announced
his impending retirement
as director for the Oregon
Corrections
Division,
said the medium-security
prison in Pendleton has
been selected for a new
treatment program that
could serve as many as
600 sex offenders at any
given time. Pearce said
Corrections must work to
change the behavior of the
sex-offender population.
The sex offender program,
Pearce said, hinges on
the state’s ability to hire
two professional psychol-
ogists to provide inmate
assessment and treatment.
The program could start
within 90 days of the time
those individuals are hired,
Pearce said in a meeting at
EOCI. He noted that the
program received about
$600,000 from the 1990
Oregon Legislature.

fall in Meacham during
the past week, the first part
of the week being warm
enough to permit plenty of
thawing, but the latter part
turned colder. Saturday the
thermometer
registered
20 degrees below and on
Sunday morning it was 25
degrees below. The snow is
still four and five feet deep
everywhere.

A 22-year-old Hermiston
man told city police that
getting “in trouble” might
help him get a job so he
stole a car in the business
district Thursday evening.
He drove the car around the
area and returned it 1 1/2
hours later to its original
parking place. Then he
walked to the police station
and turned himself in. He
was lodged in the county
jail on a theft charge in lieu
of $1,000 bail. William D.
Olson said a police record
might help him get a job.

1931, and his young female
passenger was cured once
and for all of thrillseeking
after spending time in a
local jail.

17-year-old Peggy
Carnahan left Portland
together Jan. 14, 1931, after
“borrowing” a car from a
Portland garage. The couple
traded the car for another
one and $20 cash in Mosier,
then continued east on their
joyride. Portland police
posted an all-points bulletin
for the pair, and a Umatilla
County sheriff’s deputy
spotted them near Meacham
two days later, where they
were arrested.

home by Portland

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — A teenage girl who slipped into
an abandoned Illinois prison for an urban adventure ended
up serving a short sentence when she accidentally locked
herself inside a cell.
Illinois State Police say two teenage girls entered the
Joliet Correctional Center through a hole in its fence
Monday.
Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Stromberg
says the teens were exploring the suburban Chicago prison
that’s been closed since 2002 when one of them locked
herself inside a cell.
The other girl got firefighters to the site, and they used
a sledgehammer to break through a brick wall and free her
companion.
Stromberg tells The (Joliet) Herald-News that she spent
45 minutes in the cell.
State Police say the teens will face trespassing charges.
