Saturday, January 14, 2017 Hermiston woman turns 90 Longtime Hermiston resident Jeanne Echols is joining the ranks as a nona- genarian. Friends and family are invited to help Echols celebrate her 90th birthday Saturday, Jan. 21 from 2-5 p.m. at Hermiston Church of the Nazarene, 1520 W. Orchard Ave. Born Jan. 23, 1927, in Lincoln, Nebraska, she moved to California as a baby and graduated from high school in Orange, California, in 1944. In 1945, she married Herald Echols, who had just returned from serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Jeanne spent the next years following her husband as he went to college and pursued a career in the Army. For 22 years, they moved to different assignments all across the United States and overseas. Jeanne was often a single parent to their fi ve children while Herald served two tours in Vietnam or was assigned places his family couldn’t go. The couple moved to Hermiston in 1973 when Col. Echols was assigned to be commander of the Umatilla Army Depot. They stayed in Hermiston after retirement and bought a ranch in the Buttercreek area. Jeanne became active in the Methodist church and the Christian Women’s Club. She is an avid seamstress, still sewing clothes and quilts for a mission in Honduras. She’s also an accomplished artist and has always sung in choirs and played the ukulele and violin. Herald and Jeanne still live in their home in town. One of their sons resides on Echols-past Echols-now the ranch the couple bought when they fi rst moved to Hermiston. Jeanne, though not as active as she once was, is still very involved in the lives of her large family, which includes children Kristin Adams of Lakeside, Kurt Echols of Anchorage, Mark Echols of Houston, Jennifer Diallo of Portland and Scot Echols of Herm- iston, 20 grandchildren and fi ve great-grandchildren. They are looking forward to gathering to celebrate Jeanne’s 90 years of life and 72 years as a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Orchard Ave., Hermiston. January is School Board Recognition Month, and the Pendleton School District would like to thank our school board. The members of the Pendleton School District board of directors spend countless hours of unpaid time working to provide the best possible education for our students. Board members attend monthly board meetings, participate in trainings and committee meetings and constantly communicate with parents, students, school staff and the school superintendent. As a testament to our board members’ dedication, all board members recently attended the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) Fall Conference. Board members also serve as the corporate board of directors for one of our community’s largest employers. Frequently, the efforts of school board members go unrecognized. Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thank you for all they do. Pendleton School District has an active, well trained, and effective board who give of their time for the betterment of our students and staff. of Pendleton: a girl, Brooks Saige Pieschel.
