Page 6A TV TIME East Oregonian Sessions says he’d defy Trump as attorney general if needed Big Read encourages reading, dialogue WASHINGTON (AP) — Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions fervently rejected “damnably false” accusations of past racist comments Tuesday as he challenged Democratic concerns about the civil rights commitment he would bring as Donald Trump’s attorney general. He vowed at his confirmation hearing to stay independent from the White House and stand up to Trump when necessary. Sessions laid out a sharply conserva- tive vision for the Justice Department he would oversee, pledging to crack down on illegal immigration, gun violence and the “scourge of radical Islamic terrorism” and to keep open the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. But he also distanced himself from some of Trump’s public pronounce- ments. He said waterboarding, a now-banned harsh interrogation technique that Trump has at times expressed support for, was “absolutely improper and illegal.” Though he said he would prosecute immigrants who repeatedly enter the country illegally and criticized as constitutionally “questionable” an executive action by President Barack East Oregonian Contributed image “The Things They Carried,” a novel about the Viet- nam war by Tim O’Brien, is the featured book for this year’s The Big Read in Wallowa County. (541-567-3141) Obama that shielded certain immi- grants from deportation, he said he did “not support the idea that Muslims, as a religious group, should be denied admission to the United States.” Trump earlier in his campaign called for a temporary total ban on Muslims entering his country but has more recently proposed “extreme vetting.” Sessions asserted that he could confront Trump if needed, saying an attorney general must be prepared to resign if asked to do something “unlawful or unconstitutional.” Nothing new came out of the hearing that seemed likely to threaten Sessions’ confirmation by the Repub- lican Senate. Yet as he outlined his priorities, his past — including a 1986 judicial nomi- nation that failed amid allegations that he’d made racially charged comments — hovered over the proceedings. Sessions vigorously denied that he had ever called the NAACP “un-Amer- ican.” He said he had never harbored racial animus, calling the allegations — which included that he had referred to a black attorney in his office as “boy” — part of a false caricature. “It wasn’t accurate then,” Sessions said. “It isn’t accurate now.” He said he “understands the history of civil rights and the horrendous impact that relentless and systemic discrimination and the denial of voting rights has had on our African-American brothers and sisters. I have witnessed it.” Sessions has solid support from the Senate’s Republican majority and from some Democrats in conserva- tive-leaning states. But he faces a challenge persuading skeptical Democrats that he’ll be fair and committed to civil rights. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., smiles while testifying on Capitol Hill in Wash- ington, Tuesday. Wednesday Morning PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX through Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at various locations in Wallowa County. The activities include a panel of Wallowa County veterans (Jan. 19), a presentation by Whitman College professor David Schmitz (Jan. 26), “Life After War,” a photo and oral history presentation by Jim Lommasson (Feb. 2) and a viewing of “Good Morning Vietnam,” a blockbuster hit starring Robin Williams. The Thursday evening events are free of charge, except the film, which is $5 per person. The art exhibit “Exit Wounds: Life After War” is on display throughout the month of January at the Divide Camp office in Joseph and in February at Wallowa City Hall. Also, a morning book discussion is set for Wednesday, Jan 18 at 10 a.m. at Fishtrap in Enterprise. For more information, contact Mildo at mike@ fishtrap.org, 541-426-3623 or visit www.fishtrap.org. PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX Each winter, many Wallowa County residents participate in The Big Read, a community reading program. The project encourages reading, which provides a leisure activity, can reduce stress and has other health benefits. Also, book clubs and community reading programs create opportu- nities for people to explore relevant issues together. This year’s book is “The Things They Carried,” a novel about the Vietnam War by Tim O’Brien. The kick-off event is Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hurricane Creek Grange Hall in Joseph. It includes a book giveaway, a screening of the documentary “Dick Cavett’s Vietnam” and pie. Admission is $5 for adults and free for students. The Big Read continues into February with most activities free of charge. It includes film screenings, guest speakers, a special veterans’ art exhibit and a writing workshop. The event crescendos with a ’60s fashion show and dance party Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Joseph United Methodist Church. The cost is $10. The finale also features what Mike Mildo of Fishtrap describes as a “potluck extravaganza.” O’Brien’s book is a semi-autobiographical account of a young platoon on a battlefield. They find themselves dodging sniper fire and their own misgiv- ings. A New York Times best seller, the book was a finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award.
