Smith guides Stanford women past Oregon

STANFORD, Calif. — Alanna
Smith looks pretty good after
spraining an ankle last week.
She put together quite a finish
Friday night.
Smith scored 14 of her career-
high 24 points in the fourth quarter,
and No. 10 Stanford beat Oregon
81-60 for its 21st victory in the past
22 meetings between the schools.
Smith was 9 for 15 from the
field while showing off her ability
to drive to the basket and score
with either hand. Smith said she
merely responded to coach Tara
VanDerveer’s encouragement.
“Tara keeps telling everybody
on the team to attack the basket
and go to your strengths, and that is
one of my strengths,” said Smith,
a sophomore from Australia who
learned how to use
her left hand when
she broke the other
Oregon
one in high school.
Stanford (13-2,
3-0 Pac-12) hasn’t
lost at home to the
Ducks in nearly 30
years, but Oregon made the Cardinal
sweat before they pulled away in the
fourth period at Maples Pavilion.
Briana Roberson scored 15
points for Stanford, and Erica
McCall had 14.
“It’s a great win for us,”
VanDerveer said. “Oregon has a
really talented young team.”
Mallory McGwire had 16 points
and 11 rebounds for the Ducks
(11-5, 0-3), and fellow freshman
Sabrina Ionescu scored 14 in her
return after missing the past four
games with a broken thumb.

CLEVELAND — Kyle Korver
could soon be hoisting shots for the
NBA champions.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are
trying to finalize a deal to acquire
Korver, one of the league’s elite
3-point shooters, in a trade from
the Atlanta Hawks, a person
familiar with the negotiations told
The Associated Press on Thursday
night.
The sides are closing in on a
deal, but the particulars “’are not
clear,” said the person who spoke
on condition of anonymity because
the deal has not been completed.
The Vertical first reported the
potential swap.
Cleveland is in need of another
outside shooting threat with J.R.
Smith expected to be sidelined
until the end of the regular season
after undergoing surgery to repair
a broken thumb. The 35-year-old
Korver is a more than adequate
replacement as he’s shot 43 percent
from long range during his career
and his 1,952 made 3s are the
eighth most in league history.
Korver did not play in Thursday
night’s game in New Orleans,
and afterward said he had mixed
emotions about a trade that may
only need league approval before
becoming official.
“There are a lot of heart ties to
Atlanta for a lot of reasons,” said
Korver, who spent five seasons
with Atlanta after two in Chicago.
“A lot of friendships, relationships.
That’s where I had my best basket-
ball.”

13 shots including her one 3-point
attempt. Breanna Brown added
14 points on 7-of-10 shooting and
Sydney Wiese scored 10.
Kristine Anigwe scored 26
points to lead the Bears and
Courtney Range added 10. Cal lost
its second straight after opening
the season 13-0.
