Robert A. “Bob” DeSpain
92, of Heppner, died
Monday, December 5, 2016
at his home. Celebration
of life will be on
January 7, 2017, at
1 p.m. at All Saint’s
Episcopal Church
in Heppner.
Bob was born
Feb. 8, 1924, in
Pendleton, Oregon,
where he was raised
and graduated from
Pendleton
High
School. At barely
19 years old he
enlisted in the
Navy and served in
the Armed Guard
from 1943 to 1946.
Upon returning, DeSpain
he married the
love of his life,
Aloha Painter, and remained
devoted
through
their
74-year relationship. Both
Bob and Aloha were fifth
generation Oregonians, born
into pioneer families from
both sides of their ancestors.
Bob was the eldest DeSpain
in 500 years of known
ancestry.
Always hard-working and
industrious, Bob took many
jobs over the years including
as a pilot, law enforcement
officer, firefighter, Western
Union deliverer, bus driver,
butcher, bread truck driver,
Forest Service worker with
Oregon Youth Conserva-
tion Corps, and owner of
Heppner Auto Parts. He was
very active in the All Saint’s
Episcopal church and was
always of service to the
larger community through
many venues including the
Masons, Elks and American
Legion, and volunteer work
for Heppner daycare as “Bob
the Builder.”

Hermiston swim team makes
splash with talent show
Annual event raises
money for team
transportation costs
By TAMMY MALGESINI
East Oregonian
A spotlight on area resi-
dents will feature singing,
dancing and instrument
playing during this week-
end’s Hermiston Swim Team
Talent Show, which raises
transportation money for the
team.
The dress rehearsal is
Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in
the Hermiston High School
auditorium, 600 S. First St.
The performance is Saturday
at 7 p.m., also in the school’s
auditorium.
Admission for the event
is $10 per person or $25 for
a family. In addition to all the
community talent that will be
showcased, the boys’ swim
team will perform a special
dance during the show. Based
on previous year’s involve-
ment by swim team members,
people won’t want to miss it,
said Lynne Hamblin.
“It’s always entertaining,”
she said.
Sisters Sophia and Anna
Rivera will open the show
with the Pledge of Allegiance.
The multi-talented siblings
also will perform separately
during the event, including
EO file photo
Members of the Hermiston High School boys’ swim
team perform a synchronized dance during a past
fundraising talent show. This year’s event is Saturday
in the school’s auditorium.
Anna with a violin solo and
Sofia tap dancing to “Boogie
Woogie Bugle Boy.” Also,
the Irish Singers will perform
three numbers. In all, more
than two dozen acts will take
the stage.
A best of show will be
awarded for the overall
winner. In addition, best
talent for teens and children
will be awarded. Prizes
include Wal-Mart gift cards
of different amounts. Also,
money (which goes to the
swim team) collected in jars
for each act serves as voting.
The top acts will receive
prizes.
Hamblin said it costs
about $5,000 to transport
swimmers for daily practices
to Pendleton. Last year’s
event raised about $4,000.
The talent show is the main
fundraiser held for the team.
A raffle drawing will be
held during the intermission.
Items to be given away
include an iPad, an arrange-
ment from The Cottage, a
pedicure/manicure by Kacee
Stewart and other gifts. In
addition, a bake sale will be
held during the intermission.
