better in the end.”
“We executed well, but
it was just our press break
that we didn’t execute the
greatest on,” Porter added.
“That’s a tough team to play
against, they never let the
pressure off whether it was a
made basket, missed basket
they were right back in that
press and any kind of miscue
on our part they got it.”
After keeping it close
for most of the first half,
Sunnyside started to make
its run in the third quarter,
building its lead into double
digits and eventually holding
a 20-point cushion on the
Buckaroos late in the third.
However, the Buckaroos
never panicked and kept
playing their game and even-
tually worked its way back
into the game in the fourth
quarter.
A big reason for the
Buckaroos push was the
strong play from Davies,
who finished with 19 points
— 14 of which came in
the second half. Standing
at 6-feet tall, Davies held
a sizable advantage on the
shorter Grizzlies players and
used her height to the Bucks’
advantage in the game.
“Yeah we knew that was
where our advantage was
going to be and Maureen’s
had some games where she’s
struggled and today she
came out of her shell,” Porter
said. “I hope that propels her
because she’s somebody we
need. She’s a great player,
she’s big and she can run
the floor and hopefully this
boosts her confidence and
gets her on track.”
But Pendleton couldn’t
get the lead down below
seven in the fourth quarter,
as Sunnyside’s duo of Ashlee
(20 points) and Emilee
Maldonado (19 points) hit
clutch shot after clutch shot
to keep the Grizzlies ahead.
For Pendleton, Jaden
Lemberger pitched in a
strong performance with 11
points off the bench behind
a perfect 3-3 showing from
Page 3B
the 3-point line, and Lauren
Richards added eight points
and two made 3s. Forward
Kalan McGlothan saw her
six-game
double-double
streak snapped on Tuesday,
but still contributed a strong
14 points and eight rebounds.
“I love my team,” Porter
said. “They never quit ... I
looked at the scoreboard at
one point and we were down
20 and we fought back. I
tell them all the time to just
move on to the next play,
forget what just happened
and move on and they’re
buying in. We’re playing
good teams and we’re
playing pretty well right now
and I couldn’t be happier.”
Pendleton next plays
on Saturday when it hosts
Redmond at 2:45 p.m.

PREPS: Defense, free throws lift Weston-McEwen girls
Continued from 1B
Boardman, the Pirates were
out-played in the second
and third quarters to fall in
non-league play on Tuesday.
Riverside (4-5) outscored
Tri-Cities Prep (5-3) 27-26
in the bookend quarters, but
couldn’t match the more
athletic Jaguars in the first
and third.
“We just didn’t play well,”
said Riverside coach Clair
Costello. “(Tri-Cities Prep)
played really good defense
and were quicker than us.”
It didn’t help matters that
Riverside was without starter
Noe Madrigal, and guard
Eon Castillo was playing
through an illness.
Castillo still led the
team with 14 points, seven
rebounds and five steals,
and Felix Aparicio added 12
points.
The Pirates are still
waiting to hear if Madrigal
can return to the court after
he injured his leg in their
previous game.
Isaiah Perez led the
Jaguars with 19 points.
Up next for Riverside is a
home game against Mac-Hi
on Thursday at 7 p.m.

WESTON-MCEWEN
47, IRRIGON 34 — At
Athena, staunch defense set
the TigerScots on a winning
path Tuesday as they defeated
Irrigon for the third time this
season in non-leauge play.
Weston-McEwen (8-3)
held Irrigon (6-5) to 10 first-
half points and led by 16 at
the break. Irrigon trimmed
the lead in the second half,
but never got back within
single digits.
A big reason the Tiger-
Scots’ defense was so
effective was Ali Schroeder’s
ability to harass Knights
leading scorer Jada Burns
and hold her to a team-high
nine points.
Meanwhile, the Tiger-
Scots were driving the
lane, picking up fouls and
converting their shots on
offense.
Chelsea Quaempts was
7-of-10 on free throws and
had a double-double with
13 points and 12 rebounds,
and added eight steals and
four assists. Bailey Hillmick
went 8-of-10 at the line and
finished with a game-high
14 points. The TigerScots
out-rebounded the Knights
47-32.
Both teams are on the
road on Friday. Irrigon is at
Grant Union at 5 p.m. and
Weston-McEwen will play at
Enterprise at 6 p.m.

TRI-CITIES PREP 24 —
At Boardman, the Pirates
overwhelmed the Jaguars
early in their non-league
game on Tuesday and rolled
to their third-straight victory.
“We were very balanced,
it wasn’t just one person,”
said coach Clair Costello of
how the team built its 30-10
halftime lead. “We had five
girls score multiple times in
the first half. We moved the
ball really well and hit some
three-pointers.”
Brendy Alvalos
led
Riverside (5-3) with 12
points, Faith Rosen added
11 points and six steals, and
Alondra Caldera chipped in
10 points, eight rebounds and
five steals.
Emily Dickson paced

game on Tuesday and led
16-4 after the first quarter.
Aleesha Watson led all
scorers with 27 points for
Umatilla (5-8) and was the
only player in double digits.
Charlene Alverez added
eight points for the Vikings.
Brittin Braithwaite led
Stanfield (2-9) with nine
points.
“We are not attacking

said Stanfield coach Daniel
Sharp.
