DAYS GONE BY 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 2-3, 1917 Though a chinook and warm rain has almost entirely melted the snow in and about Pendleton, other parts of the county were visited with a different brand of weather. In the mountains there has been a heavy snowfall during the past two days and in the north and east ends of the county a hard windstorm yesterday piled up the snow in great drifts, blocking traffic for a time on both rail and highway. Between Athena and Weston yesterday the wind piled the snow in such a drift that one of the Walla Walla-Pend- leton trains was stuck for several hours. It is reported that from Adams on the highways are piled five and six feet deep with snow in some places, making auto traffic out of the question. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 2-3, 1967 New Year’s babies in both Pendleton and Hermiston checked in early Jan. 1, and both were boys! The first baby born in Pendleton arrived at 5:50 a.m. at St. Anthony Hospital, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Barkley of Mission. In Hermiston the first baby was born at Good Shepherd Hospital at 8:23 a.m. New Years Day, to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Zemke. For being the first baby of the year in Pendleton the Barkley boy won over 25 prizes. The child, named Leslie Paul, is the seventh for the Barkleys. Young Alex Lynn, the first child for the Zemkes, earns over 19 prizes in the East Oregonian’s first baby contest for the West End. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 2-3, 1992 Little environmental damage is expected from the spill of about 4,500 gallons of diesel fuel into a canyon on Cabbage Hill Tuesday. The spill occurred at about 6:45 a.m. after a semi-truck hauling 9,500 gallons if diesel fuel veered off the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 and plunged 100 feet into a ravine. The driver, Russell Nally of Milton-Freewater, was not injured, but one tanker trailer ruptured and spewed its contents into a gully. The diesel fuel flowed into an adjoining canyon that typically carries runoff water into Patawa Creek. Little runoff water was present in the canyon, which helped aid the containment within one-half mile of Patawa Creek.
