Heppner coach Jeremy
Rosenbalm. “But credit to
my guys, they did enough
to pull out the win.”

The Rockets out-rebounded

of Waitsburg’s six three-

GIRLS BASKETBALL
MARIST 60, PEND-
LETON 45 — At Bend,
Pendleton lost its third
straight game to a top-10
team on Thursday at the
Summit Holiday Tourna-
ment.
First-year
Buckaroos
coach Kevin Porter said
unlike Wednesday’s loss
to No. 8 Bend, Thursday’s
defeat at the hands of No. 10
Marist (4-3) came despite a
strong performance by No.
17 Pendleton (3-3).
“We took care of the ball
better, didn’t have too many
turnovers,” Porter said.
“(Wednesday) was a tough
game, and (Thursday) we
played really well, couldn’t
be prouder of the effort.
“After the game their
coach told me he wished he
had a couple of my players,
and that’s a pretty good
compliment to get when a
team beats you by 15.”
Kalan McGlothan had
her sixth-straight double-
double to start the season
with 11 points and 12
rebounds, but Marist’s
height was too much for
the Bucks to match up
against.
“Marist
has
three
six-footers that are on
the court at all times,”
Porter said. “We just don’t
have that height, and we
certainly put the scare into
them for sure. Then in the
fourth quarter those tall
trees took over.”
Marist’s posts combined
for 32 points, but the team
was led by guard Emma
McKenney with 18. Claire
Eagen added 14, and
Kayley Elliott had 12.
Porter said another posi-
tive development to come
out of the game for the
Bucks was the emergence
of an outside offensive
attack with seven three-
pointers.
“The coaches always
knew they could make
those
outside
shots
because we’d seen them do
it in practice,” Porter said.
“I’m hoping this will be a
game that can build their
confidence.”
Pendleton had orig-
inally been guaranteed
three games at the tourna-
ment but due to a no-show
will head home with their
next game on the schedule
at Jan. 3 home game
against Sunnyside (WA) at
7 p.m.

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS
Associated Press
SPOKANE,
Wash.
— No. 7 Gonzaga beat
Pepperdine by 30 points,
dominated the boards and
forced the Waves into 20
turnovers.
The verdict?
“We played OK,” said
Jordan Mathews, who
scored 15 points on five
3-pointers. “We had some
sluggish moments.”
Nigel

92-62
on
Thursday night, extending

“We didn’t play our best
tonight,” Mathews said.
Gonzaga held a seven-
point lead after the first
half and did not put away
scrappy Pepperdine until
midway
through
the
second.
“I didn’t think that was
one of our better efforts of
the year,” Gonzaga coach
Mark Few said. “In the
second half, we defended
much, much better.”
Lamond Murray Jr.
scored 19 points for Pepper-
dine (4-9, 0-1), which
has lost eight games in a
row and was missing two
starters because of injuries.
Jeremy Major added 15.
