Mary Lorraine Barnes
Hermiston
April 24, 1937-November 28, 2016
Weston
June 11, 1920-Dec. 17, 2016
6:57 a.m. - A driver for U.S. Linen called Pendleton police to
report she had lost two tires in the middle of the intersection at
Northgate and Westgate. The driver said she had help on the
way but was blocking the road. Another stranded motorist at
9:28 a.m. reported her car slid into the curb at Northwest 10th
Street and Horn Avenue and she couldn’t get out of the car due
to the icy street. She requested assistance because she was not
parked well and afraid someone would hit her car.
7:08 a.m. - A county vehicle was damaged sometime
overnight while parked in the 700 block of East Broadway,
Milton-Freewater.
7:24 a.m. - Milton-Freewater police received a report of a
lock cut off a shed at Horizon Project, 608 N. Russell.
8 a.m. - Two callers on the 81300 block of North Golda
Road, Hermiston, told the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office a
German shepherd entered a neighboring yard and attacked
another dog. The owner of the shepherd called first to report the
neighbor shot her dog, and three minutes later the owner of the
injured dog called to report he kicked the attacking dog away
and tried to get his dog inside the house, but the shepherd came
onto his porch and attacked his dog again. The second caller
went inside, got his gun and shot at the dog, which ran across
the street to its home. Both callers requested contact from a
deputy.
12:07 p.m. - A resident of East Birch Creek Road, Pilot Rock,
reported he was the victim of a scam after mailing $4,200 to
Publisher’s Clearing House. He requested police contact.
1:43 p.m. - An employee at Central Machinery Sales, 78112
Highway 207, Hermiston, called the Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Office to file a harassment report on the advice of his lawyer
after an altercation at work with a coworker. The caller said he
found a loaded pistol in a coworker’s desk while he was looking
for paperwork and reported it to management and the human
resources department, who told the gun’s owner to remove it
from the premises. When the caller returned later to look for
more paperwork in the same desk the pistol’s owner saw him
and threatened him.
2:48 p.m. - A residence on Stateline and Burggraff roads,
Milton-Freewater, was burglarized and an air compressor,
pressure washer and other tools stolen. The owner requested
contact from a Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy.
5:03 p.m. - The air traffic controller at the Eastern Oregon
Regional Airport, Pendleton, reported a blue laser at 3:48 p.m.
illuminated an aircraft flying about 4,500 feet above sea level
and 5 or 6 miles east-northeast of Pendleton. The aircraft was
safe and on the ground, the controller also advised.
6:22 p.m. - Umatilla County sheriff’s deputies were advised
of two poachers in the area of Bensel Road and Alpine Drive,
Hermiston, shooting at a buck and a doe. The poachers were
driving a light blue full-size pickup and fired six shots. Sheriff’s
deputies were unable to locate the shooters.
8:22 p.m. - A Galaxy S6 cellphone was stolen out of an
unlocked car parked on Raymond Street, Umatilla. The caller
told Umatilla police a neighbor saw a man in a red sweater take
the phone.

PENDLETON
BMCC to serve Christmas Eve dinner
“Being able to wit-
ness your commu-
nity come together
and work with each
other to keep such
a big event going is
just remarkable.”
Popular event
moves to Pendleton
Convention Center
By TAMMY MALGESINI

A longstanding tradition
continues at a new venue, as
the Blue Mountain Commu-
nity College Christmas Eve
dinner is moving to the Pend-
leton Convention Center.
With upwards of 600
people attending, Anne
Livingston, BMCC’s director
of marketing, said the event
offers people a place to share
a meal with family, friends
and members of the college
community. Over the years,
attending the event has
become a holiday tradition for
many families, she said.
“The event atmosphere
is one of gratitude for the
community we share and for
the opportunity to eat and visit
together,” Livingston said. “It
is the best gift we can give our
guests and our volunteers.”
In its 46th year, the free
Christmas Eve dinner is
Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at
the convention center, 1601
Westgate, Pendleton. In
addition to a ham dinner with
all the trimmings, children are
invited to take a special trip
through Santa’s Toy Shop and
have their photo taken with
St. Nick.
Organized by BMCC’s
Associated Student Govern-
ment, the event is made

tion Center.
possible through generous
donations of cash, toys and
decorations. In addition, many
people from the community
volunteer their time in helping
to make it a success.
Kristine Bivins, ASG pres-
ident, and Camden VanOcker,
vice president, are excited
about moving to the venue.
The popularity of the meal,
they said, makes all their hard
work worth it. Also, the two
student leaders are quick to
point out that it’s a fun event
to be a part of.
VanOcker, who graduated
from McLoughlin High
School in Milton-Freewater,
has helped with the event for
the past two years. He espe-
cially enjoys buying gifts and
decorating the toy room.
“Watching the kids pick
out the presents and getting to
see Santa makes all the work
worth it,” he said. “It makes
you feel good helping them
during the holiday season.”
In her second year of
helping with the dinner,
Bivins, who graduated from
Hermiston High School,
enjoys experiencing the
“spirit of giving.”
“Being able to witness
your
community
come
together and work with each
other to keep such a big event
going is just remarkable,” she
said.
The event helps fill a need
in the community, VanOcker
said. Some families, he said,
might not be able to afford
a nice meal or toys for their
kids. The event, Livingston
said, helps in spreading joy.
“The Christmas season
is all about giving back
and showing kindness and
compassion to each other,”
she said.
