Vikings shake off the rust to beat Cardinals

Cranston scored a game-high
26 points and added 10 steals
and eight rebounds as the
Umatilla Vikings were able
to shake off some rust and
take down the Ione Cardinals
74-51 on Monday night.
“(Seth) just brought us
energy,” Umatilla coach
Derek Lete said. “You could
tell us not being in the gym
for four days had an effect.
We came out fl at, lacked
intensity on defense and the
effort just wasn’t there.
“But Seth came with
energy and brought just what
we needed.”
For Ione (1-4), Austin
Carter led with 22 points
while Wyatt McNary had 13.
Next up, Umatilla (4-2)
travels to Pilot Rock on
Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m.

Christian on Monday night.
“We built us a cushion
there in the fi rst half, picked
some good shots,” Irrigon
coach Davie Salas said.
“Second half we just tried
to keep that cushion, had to
adjust to using the shot clock
but we took care of the ball
and got a good win.”
Johnny Philips led Irrigon
(3-3) with 15 points, while
Hayden White had 12 and
Eric Carillo had 11.

Inclement weather and poor road conditions
may have wiped out the fi rst day of the Pilot
Rock basketball Invitational on Friday night,
but things cleared up enough to fi nally get some
games started up.
And it was clear that the Pilot Rock girls
team was happy to be back on the court after two
days off, as the Rockets ran all over the Condon/
Wheeler Knights to earn a 59-17 victory on
Saturday night at Pilot Rock
Pilot Rock High School.

this one in,” Pilot Rock coach
Condon/Wheeler Butch Wilson said after the
game.
The game was a perfect
opportunity for the Rockets
(6-1) to shake off some rust,
as the skill disparity between
Pilot Rock
the Rockets and the young
Knights (1-6) squad was
obvious on the court.
“It was a hard one to judge
because the skill level was so different, but we
just wanted to work on our game,” Wilson said.
“The nice things was we were able to run our
plays and they (Condon/Wheeler) gave us a
much different look than running against our
JV in practice, but I was pretty happy with the
execution.”
Pilot Rock excelled at driving to the basket
and working in open looks at the basket while
running through their set plays, however the
Rockets did struggle for the most part when it
came to actually making the shots. Pilot Rock
shot 36 percent (24-66) for the game, but were
helped out by a singular strong third quarter

Stanford’s McCaffrey to skip
bowl game, focus on NFL Draft
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Christian
McCaffrey is done playing college football.
The star running back announced on Twitter
on Monday he will not play in the Sun Bowl
for No. 16 Stanford on Dec. 30
when the Cardinal (9-3) face North
Carolina (8-4) in El Paso, Texas.
McCaffrey is the second
prominent player to make such
a decision. LSU running back
Leonard Fournette has said he
McCaffrey
will not play in the Citrus Bowl to
focus on the draft.
McCaffrey said last month he would be
skipping his senior season. He was the Heisman
Trophy runner-up in 2015 as a sophomore when
he set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards
in a season. This season, McCaffrey had 1,603
yards on the ground and 13 touchdowns.

Osweiler benched in Houston,
Savage to take over as starter
HOUSTON (AP) — Tom Savage will
start at quarterback for the Houston Texans on
Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Coach Bill O’Brien announced the decision
on Monday, a day after Savage
took over in the second quarter
when Brock Osweiler was
benched against the Jacksonville
Jaguars.
Savage threw for 260 yards
to help Houston rally from a
Osweiler
13-point defi cit for a 21-20 win
in his fi rst regular-season action
since 2014.
Osweiler has struggled in his fi rst season in
Houston after signing a $72 million contract
to join the Texans. He threw two interceptions
before he was benched on Sunday to give him
