SPORTS Thursday, December 1, 2016 DAWGS: Boys overcame sloppy play Continued from 1B and never relinquished it the rest of the way, keeping a comfortable cushion throughout the second half. “The big takeaway tonight is I think the girls bought in,” Rodri- guez said. “We preach competition and I have eight girls that can play at any one time, giving me multiple lineups and I’m happy with that.” The Bulldog boys didn’t have as easy of a victory as their girl coun- terparts did on Wednesday, but still put together enough baskets when it counted to get the win. Hermiston led at halftime 37-28 but scored just six points in the third quarter as the offense fell stagnant when Walla Walla switched to a zone defense. “We scored pretty easily first half, but second half we got a little selfish and didn’t move the ball as much,” senior Chance Flores said, “and in turn we didn’t get ball movement and get easy shots like we did. But fourth quarter we stepped it up and found those shots.” Flores led the Bulldogs with a game-high 22 points — including all six of the third quarter points. In fact, the first Bulldog other than Flores to score in the second half was Thomas McCullough who’s lay-in at the 6:18 mark of the fourth quarter broke Flores’ streak of eight consecutive points. Walla Walla eventually got within two points of the Bulldogs at 47-45 with just under three minutes to play, until Andrew James stepped up and nailed the biggest shot of the night. James caught a pass on the left wing, rose up and nailed a 3-pointer with 2:20 left to put Hermiston back up by five and cruise to the win. “Andrew James isn’t our best shooter but man he knocked down a huge shot,” Arstein said. “That gave us the momentum right back when we hadn’t scored in a while.” The game also acted as a show- case for several new faces on the varsity boys squad, such as Irrigon transfer Xavier Rambo — second on the team with 15 points — and sophomores Cesar Ortiz (6 points on 2-2 3-pointers) and Jordan Ramirez. Arstein said he was especially pleased with the effort Ramirez gave. “We didn’t know what to expect with Jordan,” he said. “He played freshman ball all last year and had a great summer. He’s pretty hard- nosed and a really competitive kid, he tries not to take any plays off. He has a great attitude and it may not show in the stat book but he works his butt off and did so tonight.” The Bulldog girls will be back in action on Friday night at the Dawg- house when they play Wilsonville in tournament play. The boys will also be in tournament action in Aloha where they will first take on Wilson on Friday night. ——— GIRLS WWHS 12 8 11 11 — 42 HHS 18 10 17 15 — 60 WALLA WALLA — M. Yenney 11, E.
