SPORTS Thursday, November 24, 2016 BLAZERS: Continued from 1B James had his second triple-double this season. He also passed Guy Rodgers for 17th place on the career assist list. Cleveland, which made its first nine 3-pointers, led 46-31 after one quarter and scored 81 points in the first half, two short of the fran- chise record. Love was 1 for 6 and scored six points the rest of the game, all in the third quarter. He made 12 of 20 shots, including 8 of 12 3-pointers. “To get 34 points on this team, it says a lot,” said Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue. “The thing I liked the most was when he got going, our guys really looked for him.” Love recorded his first 40-point game since April 14, 2014, with Minnesota. He scored a career-high 51 points while playing for the Timber- wolves on March 23, 2012. S TA R - S T U D D E D CROWD Indians manager Terry Francona, voted the Amer- ican League Manager of the Year last week, and Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown were in attendance. Entertainer Wayne Newton was also at the game and congratulated Love as he came off the court. TIP-INS Trail Blazers: Portland finished 1-4 on a five-game road trip. ... F Al-Farouq Aminu (left calf strain) missed his ninth straight game. Coach Terry Stotts said there is no update on his status. .... Stotts has 190 victories with Portland, tying him with Mike Dunleavy for fourth place in team history. Cavaliers: Love’s high- est-scoring game with Cleve- land was 34, which came on Nov. 23, 2015, against Orlando. ...Cleveland’s record for points in a half is 83, set on Jan. 15, 1993. the second quarter. UP NEXT Trail Blazers: Host New Orleans on Friday, begin- ning a four-game, nine-day homestand. Portland is 4-3 at Moda Center this season. East Oregonian Page 3B TIGERS: Seniors ready to leave it all on the field Continued from 1B “They have good running backs, they have good blocking, and we’re going to take it the same way, prepare just like last week,” Blan- kenship said. “We know that they’re a good team and we’ll have to play nearly a perfect game. We’re trying to get 100 percent everything, no missed blocks, no missed tackles, just key off of everything.” On the defensive side, the Rams like to stack the box against run-heavy teams. Against Heppner, Regis blitzed from the edges often and stuffed the middle to slow down the Mustangs run game and force them to pass. Stanfield’s offense knows it will have its hands full, especially in the trenches. “We have to come out and have our best game of the season,” said senior lineman Noe Sanchez. “The running backs go as we go so we have to bring our best game, we have to block to the whistle and stay of energy. And it helps that the opposing defense plays through all of it so we’ll be fresh and wear them out and that helps out a lot.” RELOAD THE DEFENSE: Stanfield had an excellent defen- sive game plan for Kennedy and executed it to near perfection last week, and the Tigers will need to have that same execution level this week to pull out the state title. “We’re just going to continue to play assignment football,” Salas said. “We’ll take the bend-but-don’t- break approach and not give up the big plays. I always tell my kids you have to play good defense to have a chance and we’re going to have to be very disciplined in what we do. “We know who their athletes are and we know whoever makes the least amount of mistakes will win the football game.” LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FIELD: Win or lose on Saturday, it will be the final time that half the on those blocks. We’ve beat them once but it won’t be an easy task to beat them again.” KEYS FOR STANFIELD KEEP RUNNERS FRESH: In last week’s win over Kennedy, Stanfield dominated the time of possession after holding the ball for nearly 30 minutes compared to just 19 minutes for the Trojans. A big reason was Stanfield’s ability to run the ball in a variety of ways. Whether it was jet sweeps with Thyler Monkus and Adrian Renner or runs up the gut with Grogan and Blankenship, the Tigers plethora of running options is what makes the Tigers so dangerous. Last week six players combined for 45 rush attempts and 254 rush yards. “It’s really great,” Blankenship said of the number of playmakers. “No one is drained by the end of the game because we can have a rotation going and everyone’s full Tigers roster plays a high school football game and by doing so they have a chance to end a long title drought for the town of Stanfield. The seniors are determined to do it for the town and the school has been so great to them for their entire lives. “It would be amazing,” said senior Jose Garcia. “It would mean a lot to us because since freshman year we’ve been putting in the work through all the summers and to have a chance finally is great.” “It’d be a great feeling,” Sanchez added, “knowing it’s been 59 years since the last title and knowing that there’s been many great teams here in Stanfield but knowing that this senior class and this team won the state championship. That we left it all out there and won that ring, that’d be the greatest feeling of all.” ———— Contact Eric at esinger@eastore- gonian.com, (541) 966-0839, or on Twitter @ByEricSinger.
