RECORDS Tuesday, November 8, 2016 East Oregonian Page 5A Nancy Ann Carrillo Jacqueline ‘Jacque’ Mack Hill Gerald Michael ‘Jerry’ Reed Hermiston August 12, 1929-October 25, 2016 Hermiston November 5, 2016 Hermiston June 15, 1935-November 4, 2016 Nancy Ann Carrillo of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on August 12, 1929, and died on October 25, 2016, at the age of 87. She was born in Browns- ville, Penn., to parents Claude and Edna Davis, and was raised in Fayette City, Penn. In 1948 she attended Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, where she met and married her husband of 53 years, Fred Carrillo. Together, Nancy and Fred lived throughout the west including Carrillo California, Utah, Colorado, Texas and Oregon before settling in Spokane, Washington, in 1971. In Spokane, Nancy was involved with the Compass Club, the Women’s Mining Association and the Spokane Symphony. Fred and Nancy then retired to Reno, Nevada, where they enjoyed traveling with the Reno Friendship Force. They moved to Hermiston in 2003 to be closer to family. Nancy was a member of the United Methodist Church, PEO and bridge clubs. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing bridge, loved cooking and entertaining for family and friends, and will be missed. She is survived by her daughters Dana Wood and her husband Tom, Herm- iston, Ore., and Carol Freitag and her husband Bill, Renton, Wash., and three grandchildren, Stephanie, Hannah and Derek. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Carrillo, her parents, and her sister, June Ellingsworth. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Hermiston, Oregon. Martha Helen Magoon Pendleton October 23, 1929-November 2, 2016 Martha Helen Magoon died Tuesday, November 2, 2016, in Pendleton, Oregon, after a long illness. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on October 23, 1929, to Doris and Larry Ward. She was the third of five children. Her father Larry was disabled in WWI. Martha spoke often of the hardships of her childhood and of her mother, who worked tirelessly to provide for and keep the family together. When Martha was a teen, her family moved to Oregon, where she Magoon graduated from high school at St. Helens, Oregon. She met and married Frank Porter while she and her family worked on his family’s hop farm in Keiser, Ore., near Salem. They moved to Umatilla County where they both worked at Ordnance; Martha worked as a switchboard operator. She and Frank later joined his parents, working and living on a small farm on the Loop Road near Stanfield. It was there that they had their four children. In 1960, the family left the farm and moved to Echo. Martha worked for a short time at the (then) State Hospital in Pendleton. After she divorced, Martha met and married Elton L. Fraser. They moved to Stanfield, and had another child. During this time she worked various jobs, mostly in food service. In 1970, she married Bill L. Magoon, and they resided in Umatilla County and Jackson County They traveled exten- sively, and were able to visit many places in the states. Bill died in October 2001. Martha is survived by five children, Linda Mills, Rita Porter, Kellie (Jeff) Williams, Fritz Alan (Sharyn) Porter, and Lee (Marie) Fraser, 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grand- children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Carl (Lydia Ann) Ward, Betty Jo (Chuck) Jaehne, Jerry (Kathleen) Ward, and Eva (Bill) Kasch. The family is extremely appreciative to her caregivers, Penny Wicklander, Bobbie Ables and Lucy Argueta. They also are very grateful of the care that Martha and the family received at the end of her life from the dedicated and sensitive staff at St. Anthony Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on November 20, 2016, at the Oregon Trail Manor in Pend- leton. Burial will take place Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, at St. Andrews Cemetery. Jacqueline “Jacque” Mack Hill passed on November 5, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer for over four years. Jacque was the tenth of 13 children born to Fabian and Irene Mack in Baker City. She is survived by her husband Daniel J. Hill, her daughter Mackenzie D. Hill, and 11 of her siblings: Jerrold Mack and Joseph Mack of St. George, Utah, Joyce Mack Towle of Westport, Wash., Janice Mack Talcott of Olympia, Wash., Jeff Mack of Hill Oak Harbor, Wash., Julia Mack Crippin and John Mack of Montrose, Colo., Jason Mack of Montgomery, Ala., Judith Mack Cameron of Lake Oswego, Ore., Jordan Mack of Houston, Texas, and Jillona Mack Moretti of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jacque was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Katherine Klein Mack, her father, Fabian S. Mack, and brother James Mack. Jacque was born in Baker City in 1961, and attended St. Francis Academy, graduated from Baker High School and attended Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore. She was part of a jewelry family. Both her father and mother owned jewelry stores in Eastern Oregon and like all her siblings, Jacque worked her way up in the business. She was a natural, with her bubbly personality and acumen as a buyer, knowing what her clients would want. She came to Hermiston in 1982 to join her mother in I.J. Gems. From then on, Jacque owned and successfully operated IJ Gems in Hermiston for over 30 years. The store closed in 2014, due to her illness. Jacque was an active part of the Hermiston commu- nity, working hard toward the preser- vation and develop- ment of the histor- ical downtown. She initiated the original “Spud Fest,” which later became the “Fun Fest,” and directed it for 10 years. She maintained a leadership role in the Merchants Association for many years and was the driving force behind the Downtown Christmas Lights every year. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private. A celebration of life will start at 12:30 ending at 2:30 at the Herm- iston Conference Center. Yvonne Hastings Connor Bunker, 85, of Pend- leton passed away Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Heppner, with a reception to follow. Inurnment will follow the services at Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Yvonne was born December 17, 1930, the daughter of W. Carey and Alice (McDaniel) Hast- ings in Heppner, Ore. She was raised Bunker in Hardman, Ore., until the seventh grade, moving to Heppner to finish her education. She met Roger Connor of Heppner, and they were married June 6, 1948, at the home of Frank and Gladys Connor. They lived in Heppner where Jon and Maryetta were born. With a job opportunity the family moved to Hood River, where Carrie was born. Roger worked for Safeway and was transferred two more times before settling in Forest Grove. She was a homemaker until employed by Dr. George Williams as a dental chairside assistant. Then in 1979 the family moved to Lytle, Texas, in joint business with her sister and husband Howard and Clarice Henry. After the death of her mother in 1986, they moved back to Hillsboro, Ore. Then with the failing health of Roger’s mother they moved to Heppner. In 1991 Roger died of cancer. Yvonne then joined the Eagles Auxiliary. On Saturday and Sunday she went dancing. In Pend- leton in 1993 she met Charles Bunker and became his dancing partner. In October 1994 they were married. They would dance at Eagles lodges and senior centers. She enjoyed going to the Pendleton Senior Center, having lunch, visiting with everyone and dancing daily. She is survived by her sister Clarice (Hastings) Henry and husband Howard; daughters Maryetta Connor- Gamel-Baker and Carrie Connor Oglesbee; grandchil- dren Pauline (Ted) Schwarz, Mary (John) Russell, Corey Gamel, Kevin (Mary) Connor and Kyle Connor; and great-grandkids Marissa and Eric Russell, Cameron and Dylan Gamel, and Paige Schwarz. She was preceded in death by parents Carey and Alice Hastings, husband Roger Connor and son Jon Connor. Her husband Charles Bunker died November 5, 2016. In 1978, Reed and two other weekly publishers took five corporations and rolled them into one corpo- ration that became Eagle Newspapers, with three primary stockholders: Reed, Dick Nafsinger of Hood River, Oregon, and Denny Smith of Salem, Oregon. Eagle went on to acquire other news- papers throughout Oregon, Wash- ington and Idaho. By 1984 Eagle Newspapers owned and operated a total of 18 once- and twice-a-week newspapers. In 1984, after acquiring the Post Publications in Camas, Washington, his wife of 25 years, Dolores, died suddenly of cancer; she was 48 years old. Reed left Eagle later that year and went back to Hermiston, Oregon, as owner-operator of the Hermiston Herald. In 1987, Reed married Penny Harris, the former office manager of the Post Publications in Camas, Washington. The Herald continued to be a domi- nant weekly newspaper in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Reed sold the Hermiston Herald to Westcom Publishing in December of 1991. (American Newspaper Representatives), repre- senting weekly and daily newspapers throughout the United States, and past president of the Oregon News- paper Publishers Association died November 4, 2016. Mr. Reed was born in Portland, Oregon, on June 15, 1935, to George Walter Reed and Mary Louise Reed. Mr. Reed Reed began his newspaper career in Camas, Washington, as the fifth man on a five-man advertising staff. On September 16, 1961, he married Dolores Thompson Bartlett, who was the advertising manager in Camas at the time. In 1965, Reed became publisher of the Itemizer Observer newspaper in Dallas, Oregon, working for the ex-governor EImo Smith. In 1970, Reed bought a half interest in the Hermiston Herald in Herm- iston, Oregon, and became publisher. He bought the remaining half from Marge Bartlett in 1975. The Herm- iston Herald, in 1970, was a three-employee, eight-page hot type newspaper that grew to be the largest once-a- week, independently owned newspaper in the Pacific Northwest, averaging 40 broadside pages each week. Two newsmen who began their careers under Reed’s tutelage in Hermiston later went on to win Pulitzer prizes for their outstanding writing abilities. By 1980, the Herald and his former newspaper, the Itemizer Observer in Dallas, Oregon, had won first place in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers General Excel- lence category no less than four times. During his long newspaper career Reed was invited to the White House and met with four past presidents: Carter, Reagan, Nixon and Ford. He was a featured speaker throughout the United States on news- paper advertising. The Hermiston Herald went on to win numerous national newspaper awards during his publishing career.
