Marilyn Kay Morrell, 75,
of Pilot Rock died October
24, 2016, in Hermiston.
A gathering of family and
friends will be held on
Saturday, November 19,
2016, from 2 to 4 p.m. at
Archie’s Restaurant in Pilot
Rock.
Marilyn
was
born October 14,
1941, in Pendleton
to Arvine and
Bertha (Gibson)
Porter.
She
attended
Pilot
Rock
schools
and
eventually
went on to beauty
school,
having
her own shop for
many years. In her Morrell
younger years, she
was a beautiful woman who
lived an active and inter-
esting life. In 1985, she met
and married her life partner,
Don Morrell. She worked
with him in the electrical
business from California
to Maine then to Portland.
They then returned home to
run the family ranch on East
Birch Creek in Pilot Rock.
Marilyn will be remem-
bered as a loving, caring,
and beautiful person. She
loved to laugh and had a
great sense of humor. She
was very interested in things
going on around her and
was a wonderful listener.
She was always caring and
there to support you when
you needed her. Marilyn
and her husband Don were
involved with foster and
respite care of children and
young people for many
years. She volunteered with
SMART at the local schools.
She was an active member
of the Pilot Rock
Food Pantry from
its inception.
She loved her
family, friends and
community. She
will be missed by
all.
Survivors
include
her
daughter, Melinda
Nicols; son Rob
Sewell and wife
Kristi; daughter
Kathy Morrell; son Deward
Morrell and wife Patty;
son Doug Morrell and wife
Jenny; sister Cheree Evans;
brother Lane Porter; and
numerous
grandchildren
and
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Don
Morrell, and brothers Larry
Porter and Gary Porter.

Burns Mortuary of Pendleton
is in charge of arrangements.
She was born February
2, 1931, in Walla Walla,
Washington, to George W.
and Dorothy M. (Coulter)
Egg. She enlisted in the U.S.
Air Force in October of 1951,
receiving honorable discharge
from the Air Force in 1953.
She was married to Robert
Ogden. They had a daughter
and four sons together. Their
marriage later ended. In
May of 1967, Charline, now
a single mom, moved her
five children to Pendleton
to be closer to her parents
who owned and operated
the Gurdane Ranch outside
of Pilot Rock. Charline then
went to work for Blue Moun-
tain Community College as
a secretary. She learned to
stretch her budget to feed
her family of five for years.
In May of 1974 she
married Robert L.
Rooper. “Charlie”
worked as a secre-
tary for BMCC for
many years, then
worked for the U.S.
Forest
Service,
retiring in 1993.
She
was
a
member of the
Pendleton Eagles
Auxiliary. One of
the great joys in
her life was golfing
at Echo Hills and
gambling at Wild-
horse Resort &
Casino. She would
usually do both with her best
friend Linda Gettman.
She is survived by daughter
Loetta Dagley and husband
Don Dagley of Pendleton,
Ore.; sons Roger Ogden and
Karen of Spokane Valley,
Wash., George Ogden of
Pendleton, Ore., Gary Ogden
of Pendleton, Ore., and Robert
Ogden and Debbie of Wash-
ington, Ga.; stepdaughters
Tinker Pettyjohn and Sheila
Dyer, and stepson Robert B.
Rooper; brother George G.
Egg and Susan of Vancouver,
Wash.; nieces Jo Mae Alex-
ander and Jamie Roderick;
and numerous grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death
by her parents, George and
Dorothy Egg, and husband
Robert L. Rooper.

awards fall grants
On Oct. 20, 2016, 11
teachers from the Pendleton
School District present
requests for funding to the
Education
Foundation
of Pendleton for various
activities for the students in
their classrooms.
After listening to the
presentations, the Education
Foundation granted a total
of $12,204 in awards for the
following activities:
Schelle Bixler, PHS
Honors Biology teacher,
will be taking approximately
80 students in her classes on
a field trip to the Oregon
Coast. This will be her
twenty-second year taking
these students on this trip.
Kathryn Youngman,
PHS foreign language
teacher, will take 25 students
to the University of Oregon
to participate in the Foreign
Language and International
Studies Day.
Kristin Swaggart, PHS
culinary arts teacher, will
take her students to partic-
ipate in the FCCLA State
Leadership Conference in
Portland, with their main
focus competing in the
culinary competition.
Olivia Rush, Pendleton
High School art teacher,
has made arrangements for
her students to view gallery
exhibits at both Pendleton
Center for the Arts and
the Betty Feves Memorial
Gallery at BMCC several
times during the school year.
John Scanlan, drama
teacher at Sunridge Middle
School, took students
from his drama class to
a production of Portland
Center Stage’s “Little Shop
of Horrors.”
Kathy Gregory, fifth
grade teacher at Washington
School, is planning to host
three author visits via Skype
during this school year.
Jill Gregg, ASPIRE
(Access to Student Assis-
tance Programs in Reach
of Everyone) coordinator
at Pendleton High School,
will take 42 students on a
trip to visit a public four-
year university, a two-year
community college, and a
private university. They will
also visit Columbia Sports
in Portland, which provides
a view of employment
opportunities after college.
Mike Heriza, fourth
grade teacher at Sherwood
Heights Elementary, will
take 90 fourth graders for a
tour and lunch at Tamastsk-
list Cultural Institute.
Anne Sokoloski, child
development specialist at
Pendleton Early Learning
Center, will again coordi-
nate the Pendleton School
District art show to be held
in April at the Pendleton
Convention Center. This is
the 13th year for this event.
The public is invited to
view the art display which
includes projects from pre-K
through 12th grade.
Cheryl Carlson, music
teacher at Sherwood Heights
Elementary School, will
take fourth and fifth grade
students to participate in the
District VI Children’s Choir
Festival at Eastern Oregon
University in La Grande in
the spring.
Christina van der
Kamp, School to Careers
coordinator, is working in a
program created to connect
students of PHS, Hawthorne
Alternative School and
Nixya’awii
Community
School to meaningful
career-related
learning
opportunities. They are
collaborating with business
and industry partners that
will provide students with
hands-on career training.
The funding will provide the
means to build a database
management program as
well as assist with student
transportation needs to and
from the business partici-
pants.
