WEDNESDAY
12:28 a.m. - An Irrigon woman reported her son threatened
her earlier and now was “being an [blank] to” her and she
needed law enforcement to respond.
7:55 a.m. - A Hermiston woman asked police to send an
oficer to her home to look at a text message she received that
she felt was harassment. She also called the night before, but
this was a new message.
9:42 a.m. - Law enforcement receive a complaint about
illegal dumping and littering along a section of East Progress
Road, Hermiston. The caller reported inding paperwork in the
trash with a name and address.
11:18 a.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a Banner
Bank customer committing fraud on check deposits.
12 p.m. - A caller reported a hate crime in the area of 80800
Highway 395, Hermiston.
12:29 p.m. - CenturyLink workers tried to access a woman’s
property on Friend Lane, Hermiston, to install underground
service for someone on the road, but the property owner has told
the company three times now that it cannot dig on her property.
12:37 p.m. - A caller asked to speak to a Umatilla County
sheriff’s deputy about teen drivers at the Athena City Park on
South Fifth Street and Park Lane. The teens spin their vehicle’s
tires, causing gravel to hit other vehicles, the caller said, and the
juveniles also throw their lunch garbage on the ground.
12:44 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of possible
dog neglect on Northwest 14th Street.
1:03 p.m. - A caller reported a man with a sledgehammer
walked from the area of the Les Schwab Tire Center, 1550
Southgate Place, Pendleton, to the nearby St. Anthony Hospital.
3:43 p.m. - A man living on West Ridgeway Avenue,
Hermiston, told police a male came to his home, threatening to
kill him, and said, “Your day is coming,” then left.
4:53 p.m. - A caller said “some guys” dumped a couple of
mattresses and furniture at Lee Street Grade and Campbell
roads, Pendleton, but they picked up the items when the caller
talked to them. The person also asked law enforcement to talk to
the dumpers.
6:35 p.m. - A woman told police she was at Blue Mountain
Village Apartments, 2700 S.W. Goodwin Ave., Pendleton, when
a male punched her with his closed ist in her gut.
7:44 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a woman
who was a victim of physical abuse.
8:22 p.m. - A Weston caller reported a man on South Normal
Street was screaming at his girlfriend to give him the key,
made threats and hit the garage with a hammer. Children were
present, the caller added, and both parties screamed at each
other.
11:52 p.m. - A caller reported a “huge ight” outside the Loyal
Order of Moose lodge, 220 Third St. N.E., Irrigon, resulted in one
person unconscious on the ground.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
Tuesday
•Pendleton police arrested Ernest Garion Douglas Morning
Owl, 23, of 3220 1/2 N.E. Riverside Ave., Pendleton, for
fourth-degree assault (domestic violence).
Wednesday
•Oregon State Police arrested Eugenio Vazquez Flores, 25,
of Hermiston, for driving under the inluence of intoxicants. His
blood-alcohol level was .17 percent, more than twice the .08
percent legal limit.
•Oregon State Police arrested Brodey James Patrick
Sullivan, 21, of Hermiston, for unlawful purchase of a irearm.
Sullivan tried to buy a gun at Bi-Mart 200 S. First Place,
Hermiston, according to state police, but he is on misdemeanor
court probation for hindering prosecution. He told police
he reviewed his court paperwork and did not see anything
preventing him from having a gun.
State police referred the case to the Umatilla County District
Attorney’s Ofice for consideration of prosecution.
•Pendleton police responded to Go Fish RV Park, 1500
S.E. Byers Ave., after a caller at 11:04 a.m. reported “there are
a bunch of crackheads ighting each other with bat, crowbars.”
Police made no arrests.
But a second call at 1:11 p.m. at the trailer park about
neighbors ighting with a child present resulted in the arrest of
James Alvin Johnson III, 38, for interfering with a peace oficer.

Adult prom beneits playground project
MILTON-FREEWATER — Adults looking for a
grown-up prom experience are invited to attend the third
annual Parents’ Prom: The Roaring Twenties. The dinner
and dance event is Saturday from 6-10 p.m. at the Milton-
Freewater Community Building, 109 S.E. Fifth Ave., with
a social hour at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $35 per person or $60 for a couple, and
include a catered dinner, DJ music, photo booth and a
silent auction. Drinks will be available for purchase.
Proceeds from the event will help fund a playground
at the community building in memory of Emilynn Kay
Marlatt, who died Feb. 16, 2010, at the age of two.

BMCC, AmeriCorps to make a difference
PENDLETON — Donations for the Pendleton
Warming Station are being collected throughout the month
of October as Blue Mountain Community College’s
AmeriCorps VISTA members gear up to celebrate Make a
Difference Day on Oct. 22.
The team’s goal is to collect enough donations to help at
least 25 homeless individuals. From Oct. 1-21, donations
may be dropped off at BMCC’s Pioneer and Morrow halls,
2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton. In addition, donations
can be dropped off at Safeway and Grocery Outlet in
Pendleton. The donations will be delivered Saturday, Oct.
22 to the Pendleton Warming Station.
To help encourage a variety of donations, VISTA
coordinators have organized three themed weeks with
suggested donations:
•Oct. 1-7, “Warm & Dry Week” for coats, socks, shoes
and warm clothing.
•Oct. 8-14, “Restful Nights Week” for sleeping bags,
pillows and pillow protectors.
•Oct. 15-21, “Safe Travels Week” for backpacks,
travel-sized toiletries, food and snacks.
BMCC’s AmeriCorps VISTA program works to build
a sustainable outreach project to help those within our
community ind hope, a smile, and warmth in an effort

Extension Service offers online assessment
The OSU Umatilla County Extension is looking
to improve its programming based on the needs of its
clientele in Umatilla County.
The organization is evaluating its current program
satisfaction and assessing how it can continue to meet the
needs of our community. Part of the process is receiving
input. People are asked to complete a survey, which can

Stanield author releases book
STANFIELD — The public is invited to meet Stanield’s
newest author during a meet and greet and book launch.
Maria Hurty, who recently published “Once Upon a

Mary Kelley, the pretty
wife of Carl Kelley and
mother of Francie Peterson,
Greg Long (and wife Sharon
Boling), and Sharyn Long,
closed her eyes on September
1, 2016, and as she put it, went
on her “next big adventure.”
Mary was born in Idaho in
1927. Then in 1933
she was blessed to
be adopted by loving
parents George and
Elma Koford of
Montpelier, Idaho.
The family was
soon joined by her
sister Maxine.
Mary
wed
Rodney Long in
1944. They built a
home in Sharon,
Idaho, and there Kelley
they raised their
three children, although Mary
rather felt she had ive kids,
as she loved her niece Lynda
Jensen and nephew Jim
Irving like her own.
Mary and Rod came to
divorce and she then married
Carl Kelley of Grass Valley,
Oregon, in 1966. They
tramped around for many
years following his work as a
surveyor. They even traveled
to Guam. Everywhere they
went they had good times
and made lots of friends.
Eventually they settled in
Irrigon, Oregon, but later on
as age and failing health was
making it dificult to stay on
their little spread, they moved
to Kennewick, Washington,
where Mary lived out the
remainder of her life.
She was an all-around girl
and could milk a cow, rake
hay, buck bales, sew clothes,
knit and crochet. For 20 years
she did the family laundry
with a wringer washer and
hung it to dry. Then it was
sprinkled damp, rolled and
stuffed in a bag to be ironed
the next day. She did move
to an automatic washer but
never changed from
line drying.
Raising
her
family she did all
the baking. The
favorite birthday
fare was chocolate
pie and chicken
‘n’
homemade
noodles, with home
canned
pickled
beets. Every fall
she illed the store
room with quarts
and quarts of home
canning. Greg was especially
fond of her bottled cherries.
She continued to home can
until she was into her eighties.
She was famous for saying
“not my problem” and “if it
hurts don’t do it.” Her grand-
kids dubbed her the Queen of
Breakfast (which incidentally
was her favorite meal). She
was known to refer to them as
little pumpkins or turd birds.
Mary loved rainy days,
the coast and animals. She
was many things to many
people and we will miss all
that she was.
Preceding her in death
were her parents, sister,
and granddaughter Kresta.
Following her in life are her
husband, children, 10 grand-
children, 27 great-grandchil-
dren (one on the way), and
one great-great-grandson.

Sandra Kay “Sandy”
Strader (Neufeld), 68, passed
away at Oregon Health &
Science University (OHSU)
in Portland due to compli-
cations from surgery on
September 21, 2016. At her
passing, she was surrounded
by her family.
Sandy
was
born in Crescent
City, California, to
Nick and Margaret
(Cloake) Neufeld on
December 1, 1947,
the second of four
children. She was
raised in Stayton,
Ore., Sacramento,
Calif., and Salinas,
Calif., where her
father Nick was a Strader
chaplain. In 1961,
at 13, she had a
lifesaving open heart surgery
in San Francisco.
She graduated from
North Salinas High School
in 1966 and looked forward
to attending her 50th reunion
this year. After graduation, she
substitute taught at Boranda
School District in Salinas. She
later attended Hartnell Junior
College.
Sandy met and married
Daniel Strader on May 7,
1970, and for the next 20
years she traveled the world
as a military wife and had two
sons. Through her children,
she developed a passion for
helping those with special
needs. At each military
posting, she fought for the
inclusion of her autistic
special needs child at each
school he attended.
After completing her
degree in recreational therapy
at California State University,
Sacramento in 1990, she
moved to Pendleton, Oregon,
where she worked for 10
years at Eastern Oregon
Training Center (EOTC), a
special care facility for the
mentally disabled. There
she developed several new
programs, the most important
being a sensory room that
calmed clients and reduced
aggressive behavior on
campus. She later
served on the State
Training
Center
Review
Board,
which advocated for
special needs clients
taken care of in
state-run facilities.
After retirement in
2011 she moved
to
McMinnville,
Oregon, to be
closer
to
her
growing family. It
was the move to
McMinnville that gave Sandy
the opportunity to meet her
partner, Tim Strahl.
Her hobbies included
listening to music, cooking,
reading, road trips and
gardening, but she most
enjoyed spending time with
her family and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her parents Nick and
Margaret Neufeld. Sandy is
survived by her brother Gerald
Neufeld (Gail) of Grants
Pass, Oregon, and twin sisters
Beth Neufeld of Ashland,
Oregon, and Gwen Neufeld-
Lloyd (Bill) of Fort Jones,
California; her two children,
Jay Strader of McMinnville,
Oregon, and Nathan Strader
(Cathy) of Camas, Wash-
ington; three grandchildren;
and her partner, Tim Strahl of
Sherwood, Oregon.
A private memorial will
be held at Sandy’s home
in McMinnville, Ore., on
Saturday, October 8, 2016, at
1:00 p.m.
