Marshall Cranston Milby
passed away on July 5, 2016,
at the age of 86. He was
the son of Cranston David
Milby and Mazie
Margret ‘Thayer’
Milby.
He was
preceded in death
by his parents,
younger brother,
Delwyn Milby, of
Waco, Texas; and a younger
sister,
Sharon
‘Milby’
Whaley, of Vancouver,
British Columbia. His wife,
Virginia, passed away on
Sept. 15, 2015.
Marshall was born on
Oct. 30, 1929, at St. Mary
Hospital, Walla Walla,
Washington. He lived in
Milton-Freewater, Weston
and Pendleton, Oregon, as a
child. He attended Pendleton
High School. His grandfa-
ther, Arthur Milby along
with other family members
owned and operated the M &
M Grocery in Milton-Free-
water, Oregon.
On Jan. 6, 1951, Marshall
entered into active service
with the U.S. Navy. He
served until Dec. 14, 1955.
His stations of service were
the U.S. Naval Training
Center, San Diego, Cali-
fornia, and the U.S. Naval
Air
Station,
Alameda,
California. He also served
aboard the U.S.S. Essex
Aircraft Carrier on the light
deck. Airplanes, ships and
boats were a lifelong passion
of his.
Marshall was employed
by the Bell phone company
and later became a mail
carrier with the U.S.
Postal Service. In 1966,
he transferred back home
to Pendleton, Oregon, and
worked until his retirement.
He belonged to the National
Association
of
Letter
Carriers where he served as
a state oficer. After retiring
from the Post Ofice, he
worked many years for Bob
Thompson RV.
He loved to bowl and
competed in several bowling
leagues until a
ire destroyed the
facility. Marshall
and Virginia moved
to Athena to be
closer to family
and they enjoyed
watching their grandchildren
participate in sports and
other activities. They were
active in the Paradise Good
Sams Club as they were both
avid RV enthusiasts and the
Athena American Legion
Post.
He was a member of
Calvary Baptist Church
where he served as a deacon
and the Athena Baptist
Church.
While in the Navy, he met
Virginia Martha Loucks on
a blind date and they were
married on March 29, 1953,
at the Chapel of Roses in
Pasadena, California. They
are survived by four children,
Donna Jean ‘Milby’ Grimes,
Susan Diane ‘Milby’ Lackey,
Keith Allan Milby and Lori
Ann ‘Milby’ Webb. There
are seven grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
A committal service will
be held on Saturday, Oct. 8
at the Athena Cemetery at
12:30 p.m. followed by a
celebration of life service for
both Marshall and Virginia
at the Athena Baptist Church
located on Fifth Street,
starting at 2 p.m.
