PORTLAND (AP) — An Oregon
man and his girlfriend accused of inten-
tionally running down a black teen after
an altercation in a convenience store
parking lot face new hate crime charges
alleging they targeted the victim because
of his race.
Russell Orlando Courtier, 38, pleaded
not guilty Tuesday to charges of irst- and
second-degree intimidation in the death
of Larnell Malik Bruce, court documents
say. Colleen Hunt, 35, who was in the
passenger seat, pleaded not guilty to a
charge of irst-degree intimidation.
Under Oregon law, a charge of intimi-
dation means the defendants are accused
of acting based on their perception of the
victim’s race, color, religion or disability.
The two had previously pleaded not
guilty to a charge of murder in the death
of 19-year-old Bruce, of Vancouver,
Washington.
Last month, The Portland Mercury
raised questions about Courtier’s possible
afiliation with a white supremacist
group after inding pictures on his Face-
book page that show him with a tattoo

Kindred. At the time, authorities had not
charged him or Hunt with a hate crime,
but were investigating.
Gresham police said Tuesday the
defendants’ “clear ties” to a white
supremacist gang were initially not
enough to charge them with a hate crime.
The Mercury reported that Courtier
became involved in the group while
serving a sentence at Eastern Oregon
Correctional Institution in Pendleton.
“Anything like this, we have to be
very careful in looking at motive before
we just assume something that may seem
very clear to other people,” said Oficer
John Rasmussen, a spokesman for the
Gresham police. “We have to be sure to
tie it in correctly to where it could with-
stand a court trial.”

According to court documents, Bruce
and Courtier got into an argument that
turned physical outside a Gresham
7-Eleven on Aug. 10. Bruce was armed
with a machete.
It still isn’t clear what the two were
ighting about, but moments later Courtier
jumped in his 1991 Jeep Wrangler and
chased down Bruce as the teen ducked
and wove through the parking lot on foot,
according to an afidavit for probable
cause. Surveillance video shows the Jeep
turning around rapidly and accelerating
toward Bruce as he tries to lee.
The video did not capture the moment
Bruce was struck, the afidavit said,
but a responding oficer found him
unconscious on the ground with blood
streaming from his head and ears. The
oficer also spotted a red Jeep speeding
away.
Hunt shouted “Get him, baby, get
him” during the ight, but has denied any
involvement in Bruce’s death, according
to court papers.
Bruce died three days after being
struck.

Governor gets
$250,000 donation
from Bloomberg
EUGENE (AP) —
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown
has received a $250,000
campaign contribution
from New York billionaire
Michael Bloomberg.
The Register-Guard
reports that Bloomberg’s
donation marks the largest
single contribution she has
received in recent years.
The donation comes
after Brown, a Democrat,
publicly announced support
for three pieces of gun
control legislation, including
a ban of high-capacity
ammunition magazines,
which the Legislature will
consider in 2017.
Bloomberg has a history
of donating to pro-gun
control candidates.
At her mid-summer press
conference in Portland,
Brown said she hopes to get
the state legislature to take
steps to curb gun violence.
Earlier this year,
Bloomberg made a
$250,000 contribution
to state Rep. Val Hoyle,
a Eugene Democrat, in
her unsuccessful run
for secretary of state. At
the time, a Bloomberg
spokesman said the donation
was the result of Hoyle’s
“leadership” in helping to
pass a 2015 expansion on
gun sale background checks
in Oregon.
Bloomberg’s
contribution brings Brown’s
total fundraising for the
election cycle to $3.7
million.

Grand Ronde
appeals ruling to
allow casino
SALEM (AP) —
Oregon’s Grand Ronde tribe
is appealing a decision to
allow the Cowlitz tribe to
build a casino in La Center,
Washington, to the U.S.
Supreme Court.
The Statesman Journal
reports that the Grand
Ronde tribe has decided
to appeal the decision to
the federal high court after
the U.S. Circuit Court of
appeals denied its request
on July 29. Tribal members
were informed of the iling
decision at an Aug. 31
council meeting.
The tribe is contesting
a lower court’s ruling to
allow the Cowlitz tribe to
establish a reservation in
Clark County, Washington.
The Cowlitz tribe plans to
build a 368,000-square-foot
casino there.
The Grand Ronde tribe
estimates it will lose 41
percent of its revenue if the
Cowlitz tribe’s Ilani casino
is permitted to open.
