Pendleton PBR Classic Night 1 winner has message for the crowd

Oil and water.
The antagonistic compounds
mixed on Monday night to provide
the winning combination for
Keyshawn Whitehorse at the Pend-
leton PBR Classic.
After two heart-pumping rides
for a total of 173.5 points, White-
horse took his time in the winner’s
circle to speak to the crowd at
Happy Canyon Arena about an
issue close to his heart.
“Those two rides were for
the Native American people in
Standing Rock (North Dakota)
fi ghting for their land,” he said
of the ongoing dispute over the
Dakota Access Pipeline. “I believe
that this was my moment for them,
and I just wanted to spread the word
in a positive manner.”
Whitehorse, just 19 years old, is
a full-blooded Navajo/Dine from
The Woodlands, Texas.
“It is important and that is our
land,” he said. “I believe they’re
doing the right thing, just not
getting enough attention. Us as
Native Americans are just standing
up for our rights, and we’re not
doing it violently.”
There was nothing non-violent
about Whitehorse’s two rides at
Happy Canyon, and he sealed the
win with an 89-point ride on BMC
Bucking Bulls’ King Buck in the
fi nal round.

PENDLETON — Coming into
her fi rst Pendleton Round-Up,
Texas barrel racer Stevi Hillman
wasn’t sure who was less prepared
— herself or fi ve-year-old mare
Martini.
After a white-knuckle ride across
the giant grass infi eld that moved
her into fi rst place during Monday’s
slack, Hillman wasn’t shy to admit
which half carried the team.
“She handled it like a champ.
It was me that was lost,” said the
Women’s Professional Rodeo Asso-
ciation’s No. 7 racer entering the
week. “My eyes were watering, I
couldn’t really see, and she handled
it like a pro.”
Hillman, whose 29.64-seconds
leads 2015 Pendleton champion
Kimmie Wall by .13, didn’t get
much more than a walk-through to
prepare for the largest pattern in the
sport.
“We just came from Puyallup
(Washington) which is a 14-second
pattern to this, so I’m very, very
proud of her,” she said of Martini,
who is owned by Michelle Darling
under the name Morning Traffi c.
“Some people set up barrels in the
pasture and just practice the big
pattern. We didn’t get to do that
coming from Puyallup so we just
hoped for the best.
“I came in and worked this
morning, so we kind of felt the
pattern, and I don’t think you can
really prepare for a run like this.
That’s a lot of running, and I don’t
think you’re going to know what
your horse will do until you do it.
… This was just going to be a fun
day, and I’m extremely proud of her
for making that run.”

deep into the 2016 soccer
season, the Irrigon Knight boys
team had to wait until Saturday
to play their fi rst game.
But they made the wait
worth it.
On Saturday afternoon,

cially for these seniors with all
of the struggles we’ve had over

The Knights (1-0, 1-0 Spec.
Dist. 4) took a little while to get
going, using the fi rst roughly
15 minutes of the game to get
a feel for City Christian (0-2,
0-1) and the game atmosphere.
But in the 16th minute, Irrigon
found its way into the score
column as sophomore Pedro
Maciel drilled a goal with an
assist from Alejandro Alvarez
for the 1-0 lead.
“When we got that fi rst goal,
the guys got a big confi dence
boost,” Keefer said.
Irrigon controlled the ball
and the pace of the game
throughout the rest of the half
and within the last 10 minutes
of the half Irrigon scored four
times to put a fi rm grasp on the
game.

went 4 for 4 with three doubles and
three runs, and Robinson Cano homered
to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Los
Angeles Angels 8-1 on Monday night
for their sixth straight victory.
Cano went 3 for 5 with his 33rd
home run. Ben Gamel added his fi rst
major league homer, a two-run shot

Ariel Miranda (4-1) shut out Los
Angeles over six innings, striking
out three and walking one in his third
straight win.
C.J. Cron scored the Angels’ only
run in the bottom of the seventh inning

TRAINER’S ROOM
Mariners: 1B Adam Lind is expected
to miss 3-4 days with a sprained fi nger
on his right hand. Lind sprained the
fi nger in Sunday’s game.
Angels: SS Andrelton Simmons was
scratched from the lineup with a bruised
right hand late Monday. Simmons, who
jammed his hand in Sunday’s game,
was initially in the lineup before being
replaced by Pennington.
UP NEXT
Mariners: RHP Taijuan Walker will
start the second game for Seattle. Walker
has battled injuries and inconsistency
this season but earned his fi rst win since
June 30 in his last start against the Texas
Rangers. Walker is 2-2 with a 7.23 ERA
in fi ve starts against the Angels.
Angels: RHP Alex Meyer will make
his third major league start and his
fourth appearance. Meyer is 2-2 with a
7.71 ERA at the major league level and
went 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA in eight minor
league games.

Wilson sprains ankle, likely to
play Week 2 against Los Angeles
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks
coach Pete Carroll believes quarterback Russell
Wilson will be able to play in Week 2 against
Los Angeles despite suffering a
FACES sprained ankle against Miami.
Speaking on his weekly radio
show on KIRO-AM on Monday,
Carroll said Wilson has been
diagnosed with a sprained ankle.
Carroll said both X-rays and an
MRI came back clear, but there is
some swelling.
Wilson
Wilson may be limited in
practice ahead of facing the Rams, Carroll said.
Wilson has not missed a game during his
career.
Wilson was injured in the third quarter of
Sunday’s 12-10 win over the Dolphins while

Robert Griffi n III broke a bone in his left
shoulder and will miss at least eight games.
Griffi n was injured on an

of Sunday’s 29-10 loss to the
Philadelphia Eagles. As he tried
to get out of bounds, Griffi n was
