WESTON-MCEWEN — The
TigerScots inished off a 3-2 record at
the Heppner Tournament on Saturday
to end a successful weekend for the
Weston-McEwen squad.
Weston-McEwen (7-4) irst took
on Wallowa and made quick work
with a 25-10 and 25-5 victory before
moving on to Heppner where they
defeated the Mustangs 30-28 and
25-16. The TigerScots then dropped
a pair of matches, falling to Grant
Union 26-24 and 25-21 and then to
Imbler 25-15 and 25-18, before they
rebounded with a 25-17 and 25-15
win over Enterprise.
“We’re working really hard to
get better,” Weston-McEwen coach
Shawn White said following Satur-
day’s action. “Imbler and Grant
Union are two very good teams and
we’re trying to catch up to them.”
Senior Ali Schroeder had a
fantastic weekend and led the
team with 90 assists, while Sara
von Borstel put up a team-high 35
digs, 27 kills, and 23 assists. Sisters
Alyssa and Sarah Finifrock each
tallied 33 digs to lead the TigerScots.
“This is the hardest working
group I think I’ve had come through
this school,” White said. “They
understand the value of teamwork
… usually it is just one or two people
with that mentality, this year it’s just
about all of them.”
The TigerScots started the
weekend with a 3-0 win on the
road against Union on Friday night,
defeating the Bobcats 25-20, 25-19
and 27-25.
BOARDMAN — Echo won
the Riverside Tournament for the
second year in a row by beating
Helix 25-15, 25-13 in the champi-
onship.
It was a rematch from pool play,
where Helix had gotten the better of
Echo in two 20-point games.
Echo went 3-0 in bracket play
with wins over Elgin 25-21, 25-16,
and Umatilla 27-25, 25-16.
Cougars coach Janice Scott did not
have any statistics available, but said
the hitting of Hannah McCarty and
Marti Huff, along with strong team
serving and defense carried the day.
“Serving was phenomenal from
all the players on the team,” she said.
“I would say we had in the semis and
championship, ive missed serves all
together, off the top of my head.
“We had good coverage,” she
added of the defense. “We tried to
keep the other team out of system
and it seemed to work for a little bit.”
Second-place Helix earned its
spot in the inals by beating Mac-Hi
25-15, 25-21, then topping Ione
25-22, 25-12.
Sadie Wilson led Helix with 22
kills in the tournament, while Lynn
Ashby tallied 19 and Ari Krol had
17. The Grizzlies rotations were
scrambled on Saturday with the
absence of Kailey Mize, who missed
the tournament due to a family
emergency.
Despite its early exit from the
bracket, Mac-Hi coach Amanda
Nelson said it was a positive outing
for the Pioneers, which were led by
Brooke Smiley with four kills and
Britany Wells with seven digs.
“It was a fun tournament and the
girls had a good day,” Nelson said.
“It was a great experience for the
girls.”

EOU upsets No. 2 Raiders

LA GRANDE — Southern Oregon has a knack for making
second-half comebacks in its heated rivalry with the Blue and Gold,
but Eastern Oregon held on for a 45-40 upset of the second-ranked
Raiders to open the season on Saturday at Community Stadium.
“I’m very proud of this team and the coaches,”
said head coach Tim Camp. “This is one of those
games that both teams played their hearts out, and
we were able to come out with a big win over the No.

2 ranked team in the country. Give credit to Southern
Oregon and their coaches, as they were playing to
win.”
Senior quarterback Zach Bartlow was solid from
the get-go, completing 23 of 31 passes for 292 yards
and two touchdowns. He also recorded 70 yards on
EOU
13 carries for two rushing touchdowns.
In addition to grabbing six passes for a team-high
103 receiving yards, junior wide receiver Calvin
Connors posted a 65-yard punt return for a critical
touchdown in the third quarter. Junior wide receiver Joshua Richards
snagged a team-high nine catches for 96 yards and a touchdown,
while senior running back Alfred Gross paced the ground attack with
82 yards on 10 carries.
On the defensive end, junior linebacker Michal Arenas was all over
the place, registering a career-high 16 tackles (ive solo) and one pass
breakup. Junior defensive back Justin Hughes added a career-high
nine tackles, while freshman linebacker Eli Teuteu forced one fumble
to go along with four tackles.

“Right now we’re in a
tough place but we’ve just
got to push through it and
hopefully tomorrow will be
a better day for us.”
