89, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, in Woodburn. She was born
June 6, 1927, in Bend. Former Stanield and Hermiston resi-
dent David Briley, 92, died Aug. 12, 2015, in Woodburn. He
was born Oct. 23, 1922, in Wilburton, Okla. A celebration of
life service for Betty and David will be held Sunday, Aug.
28 at 1 p.m. at Burns Mortuary chapel in Hermiston. Burial,
with military honors for David, will follow at Pleasant View

7:58 a.m. - Hermiston police received a request to check on two
skinny dogs on East Reeder Drive.
9:31 a.m. - A man reported the theft of mechanical bags of tools
from the bed of his truck at Villadom Mobile Home & RV Park, 53785
W. Crockett Road, Milton-Freewater,
9:58 a.m. - A son reported his mother was trying to break into his
father’s house at a trailer park on Sixth Street, Umatilla.
11:01 a.m. - A Pendleton mother reported her daughter’s fellow
students harassed her all summer on social media.
11:21 a.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice responded to a
report of a male yelling at a boy on South Main Street, Heppner, and
the male may have him on the ground. A deputy contacted the child
and his grandmother, who was disciplining the boy. The deputy found
no evidence of injury or a crime.
11:58 a.m. - A 6-year-old boy tried to use a metal rod to hit other
children at May Park, 180 S.E. Isaac Ave., Pendleton. An oficer
checked the area and spoke to several juveniles but did not ind the
rod-wielder.
12:08 p.m. - A Hermiston resident reported a possible Medicare
scam. She said a caller claimed to be with the agency and wanted
to measure her husband for a back brace, and she provided her
husband’s Social Security number. But when she called back, no
one answered.
12:48 p.m. - A Hermiston woman asked for police to help her take
care of the dog her mother left her because she had no gas money
to take the dog to a shelter. A dispatcher asked for her phone number
and mother’s name, and she said, “That’s OK,” and disconnected.
1:06 p.m. - A man asked Hermiston police to check on his
great-grandson because he was “living in ilth with no clean running
water” in an “old junky motorhome” in the parking lot of the Wal-mart
Supercenter, 1350 N. First St.
7:05 p.m. - A mother told Hermiston police her 10-year-old
daughter reported a male threatened “to do bad things to her and
drag her away.” The mother said the incident happened on Aug. 19,
and her daughter would not leave their home since then, and she
inally cried and said what happened.
7:29 p.m. - Someone dropped off three kittens at a woman’s
home on Northeast Court Street, Heppner. She told the Morrow
County Sheriff’s Ofice her dog would try to kill them.
7:43 p.m. - A caller told Pendleton police a male threw rocks at
a car in the parking lot of Mac’s Bar & Grill, 1400 SW Dorion Ave.,
Pendleton.
10:05 p.m. - Hermiston police received a report of a man
choking and hitting a woman near Sandstone Middle School,
400 N.E. 10th St.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•A Umatilla man faces a felony theft charge for stealing at least
$1,000 from the Sub Zero Restaurant & Lounge, Irrigon.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice arrested William Alexander
Sutton, 39, and booked him into the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton,
for irst-degree theft, a Class C felony. State court records show a
Morrow County grand jury indicted Sutton for stealing money from
the establishment’s cash box on June 29. The district attorney’s
ofice Wednesday morning charged Sutton on the lone count.
•A woman rushing to meet her husband at the Umatilla County
Jail, Pendleton, might be able to see him for awhile.
An Oregon State Police trooper at 1:10 p.m. stopped a Toyota
Tacoma for speeding on Westgate Drive, Pendleton. The driver.
Amanda Renee Carper, 29, of Wallowa, said she was in a hurry for
a meeting with her husband, an inmate at the jail. But Carper did
not have a driver’s license, according to the report from state police,
and a second trooper arrived and said he saw her shove something
under her seat before she stopped.
The irst trooper asked Carper to step out of the SUV and saw
her try to hide a methamphetamine pipe. State police reported she
told troopers where to ind more meth in the vehicle.
The trooper arrested Carper and booked her into the jail for
possession of meth.
•The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice reported making an arrest at
the Stafford Hansell Government Center, 915 S.E. Columbia Drive,
Hermiston, after a man and woman fought in the lobby. The sheriff’s
ofice did not provide arrest information.
•Milton-Freewater police arrested Gerardo Rubio, 32, of Milton-
Freewater, for second-degree assault, coercion, attempted unlawful
use of a weapon, menacing, second-degree criminal mischief, and
two counts of irst-degree burglary.

She was born
July 27, 1931, at
Hardman, Oregon,
the daughter of
John and Opal
Bennett
Key.
Lois grew up in
the nearby town
of Heppner and Hunt
was a graduate
of Heppner High
School, class of 1949.
She held numerous jobs
in high school through adult-
hood. These jobs included
working at the swimming
pool, movie theater, hospital,
bookkeeper at Padberg’s
Machinery, bus driver for
the school district, and also
served on the Lexington
election board.
In the fall of 1949 at
the age of 18, Lois eloped
with Arthur Dean Hunt
and was married in Twin
Falls, Idaho, on November
7, 1949. After a short time
living in Heppner, Lois and
Dean settled in Lexington,
Oregon, where Dean was a
wheat farmer and the two
remained happily married
until his death in 2007 after
58 years of marriage. In
married life Dean and Lois
ran the farm and raised two
children.
When not maintaining
the household, making
harvest lunches, or deliv-
ering messages to the
ranch, Lois was a bridge
instructor for BMCC and
an avid player. She was also
active in Eastern Star and
was a grand representative
for Tennessee and held the
position of worthy matron.
When Lois was 16 she
joined the Heppner First
United Methodist Church
where she was a member
for 69 years. Lois really

A number of artifacts from the Oregon
Historical Society Museum will be on
view during the event. Kerry Tymchuk,
executive director of the Oregon Historical
Society, is the keynote speaker for the
event.
Tymchuk’s presentation is titled, “A
Walk through Oregon.” In addition, items
from Heritage Station Museum, Umatilla
County Historical Society’s museum, will
be on display during the luncheon.
The no-host luncheon is Saturday, Oct.
1 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Pendleton
Convention Center, 1601 Westgate.
The cost is $40 for historical society

knitting, traveling, spending

her husband, drinking coffee

with friends, and

hardly ever missed
a Heppner High
School football or
basketball game.
Lois grew up
hunting and ishing
and was glad to let
people hunt or ish
on the family land.
In 2008, a year
after her husband’s
death, she moved
from her home in
Lexington to the Hermiston
Brookdale Senior Living
facility to be closer to
family. In her later life she
was an active member of the
retirement community. She
loved a good joke as well
as reading, putting together
puzzles, listening to the
local iddling group, and
taking care of her cat Abby.
Lois is preceded in
death by her husband
Dean, parents John and
Opal Key, and a brother,
Doyle Key. She is survived
by her daughter Tricia
Jeannine Robinson (Curtis)
of Pendleton, Oregon; son
Gary Hunt (Rebecca) of
Hermiston, Oregon; and
two grandchildren, Jeffrey
Hunt of Albuquerque, New
Mexico, and Miranda Hunt
of Hermiston, Oregon.
Spending time with her
family was one of her
greatest joys in life.
