United States’ Katie Ledecky shows off her gold medal
in the women’s 800-meter freestyle medals ceremony
at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
RIO DE JANEIRO —
Katie Ledecky came into
the Rio Olympics facing
enormous expectations.
Some athletes might’ve
buckled under the pressure.
She seemed to thrive on it.
The 19-year-old from
suburban Washington capped
off one of the greatest perfor-
mances in Olympic history
with her fourth gold medal
and second world record,
shattering her own mark
in the 800-meter freestyle
Friday night.
“I just wanted to lay it all
out there,” Ledecky said.
She certainly did that.
And more.
Ledecky joined Debbie
Meyer as the only female
swimmers to sweep the
three longest freestyle races.
Meyers took the 200, 400
and 800 at Mexico City in
1968.
She also followed fellow
swimmers Amy Van Dyken
and Missy Franklin as the
only American women to
win as many as four golds in
a single Olympics.
“I hit all my goals right on
the nose this week,” Ledecky
said. “I’m just proud to be
part of that history.”
Four years ago, she seem-
ingly came out nowhere to
capture gold as a 15-year-old
at the London Games. Then,
after her coach moved to the
West Coast, Ledecky hooked
up with Bruce Gemmell and
never missed a beat.
She called it “a testament

Oregon steer wrestler takes lead in second round at Farm-City
By MATT ENTRUP

There will be no buyer’s remorse
for Mike McGinn regarding his
latest purchase.
The single-horse powered
“Chevy” may be just the pickup
his season needs, and the Oregon
steer wrestler got some immediate
returns on his investment with
a 4.1-second time in Friday’s
performance that moved him to
the lead in the second round at the
Farm-City Pro Rodeo.
“I just bought this horse
Thursday so this is my ¿ rst rodeo
on him,” said the cowboy from
nearby Haines. “It worked out
pretty cool.”
McGinn said he didn’t but
Chevy without a test drive, and
the two paired to win in Greeley,
Colorado, earlier this summer, but
this was his ¿ rst time riding him as
owner.
He won’t have a chance to win
in Hermiston after missing his ¿ rst
draw, but his 4.1 is the quickest
time of the week and a sure bet
to hold up for some money in the
second round.
“It’s pretty cool because, heck,
this is home,” said the ¿ rst-time
Farm-City contestant. “I live
like an hour from here and it’s
awesome. Hermiston’s got a great
crowd and it’s fun, everybody
knows you.”
McGinn is 24th on the Columbia
River Circuit, and said he hopes his
check from Hermiston is enough to
get him into the hunt for the circuit
¿ nals.
The only change to the aggregate
leaderboard was Seth Brockman of
Wheatland, Wyoming, who turned

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) —A stunner at the
Rio Olympics: Michael Phelps has been beaten.
Joseph Schooling of Singapore built a big
lead on the opening lap and easily held off the
hard-charging Phelps to win gold
FACES in the 100-meter butterÀ y. So,
unless Phelps decides to come
out of retirement again, his ¿ nal
individual race at the Olympics
will go down as a silver. He still
has a chance to win his 23rd gold
medal in his ¿ nal race of the
Olympics, the 4x100 medley relay.
Phelps
Phelps was sixth at the turn and
Schooling almost exactly a decade younger than
the 31-year-old American wouldn’t let him pull
off the comeback, winning in 50.39 seconds.
Phelps shared the silver with two other
longtime rivals, Chad le Clos of South Africa
and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary. They all touched
in 51.14.
“Of course, I can’t wait
until I get the medal and
I can walk around the
house and say ‘Daddy, I
got you.“

The United States athlete be-
came the fi rst American to win
the gold medal in shot put since
1960 with a throw of 67 feet, 8
1/4 inches. In doing so, she also
bested her father, Michael Carter,
who took home the silver medal
in shot put at the 1984 Olympic
Games in Los Angeles.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Texas
A&M and the Seattle Seahawks have extended
a deal allowing the NFL team’s
limited use of the university’s
“12th Man” trademark to
describe fans.
The school says the Seahawks
will no longer use “12th Man”
references on social media or
on the Ring of Honor at Centu-
ryLink Field.
Texas A&M secured the trademark in 1990,
and reached an agreement with the Seahawks
in 2006 after the university sued.
The Aggies trace the “12th Man” to 1922
when student E. King Gill came out of the
stands to help the injury-plagued roster. Gill
never took the ¿ eld, but the story came to
signify fan commitment to the team.
