The climber, identiied by police as a 20-year-old Virginia man, wore a back- pack and used a harness and rope stirrups to fasten himself to the side of the 58-story Manhattan skyscraper. For a long time, the climber played a slow-motion cat-and-mouse game with would-be rescuers. Oficers smashed windows and broke through ventilation ducts to block his progress. Police also lowered themselves AP Photo/Julie Jacobson New York Police oficers struggle as they pull a man through a window as he scaled the east side of Trump Tower using suction cups, Wednesday in New York. The man spent more than 2 hours scaling the glass fa- cade of Trump Tower, climbing as high as the 21st loor before police oficers grabbed him and hauled him to safety through an open window. toward him using a window washer’s platform. The man kept his distance by methodically working his way back and forth across the facade, repeatedly repositioning suction cups resembling a type commonly used by window washers to remove big panes of glass. The chase ended dramati- cally just after 6:30 p.m. As a crowd gasped on the street below, two oficers leaned far out of a window, grabbed the climber’s arm and harness, and in a lash yanked him from his dangling stirrups. He went through the opening head irst, his legs pointed skyward. “I reached out. I took hold of his hand and I said, ‘Sir, would you come with me,”’ said detective Christopher Williams, who made the grab. Police had deployed large, inlated crash pads at the scene, but it was unclear how much protection they would have offered if the climber fell. A day before the ascent, police said the climber posted a video on YouTube entitled, “Message to Mr. Trump (why Thursday Morning COMING EVENTS SATURDAY, AUG. 13 FIRST FOODS FESTIVAL AND RACES, 6:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., July Grounds, 73310 July Grounds Lane, Mission. 6:45 a.m. race registration begins; Kanine Ridge Hike 7:10 a.m., departs July Grounds; Chumash Lacrosse tournament 8-10 a.m. and noon to 2:30 p.m.; yoga 8:15-9:40 a.m.; 10K Spawn Run 9 a.m., followed by 5K Smolt Run at 9:30 a.m. and Family Walk & Cycle at 10:30 a.m.; TWO HOURS every PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX AM 7:30 PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX PM 12:30 1 PM 1:30 Paid Pat.
