Tuesday evening storms
combining rain, hail, light-
ning and wind sent two
people to the hospital from
the Umatilla County Fair,
started more forest ires,
knocked out power, closed
roads and left Ione covered
with dust and leaves. Torren-
tial rains and marble-sized
hail driven by high winds
and punctuated by lightning
pelted the Hermiston area
Tuesday evening, knocking
down trees, power lines and
signs. Two women were
listed in stable condition this
morning at Good Shepherd
Community Hospital after
a beer garden tent at the
fair collapsed in the wind.
Margaret Crutcher, 23,
and Leneile Divebliss, 25,
were injured at about 5:30
p.m. when the storm tore
through the fairgrounds.
In neighboring Morrow
County, Ione, a farming
and ranching town of about
300, was pummeled with
wind, dust and hail Tuesday
afternoon. No injuries have
been reported, but the storm
knocked over trees and
broke windows, and left
the town coated in dust and
littered with leaves ripped
from trees by golf ball-sized
hail.

be ready for occupancy
between September 1 and 15
and Postmaster T.J. Tweedy
this
morning
received
formal notice from the post
ofice department to move
the local postofice into the
new building at the earliest
practicable date. Postmaster
Tweedy expects to move
early in the month, probably
on the second Sunday, but
suggests that before the new
building is occupied that
the Commercial association
hold a formal opening so
that the pubic may inspect
it. He suggests Labor Day as
a favorable opening day and
will take the matter up with
the Commercial association.

pilgrimage, escaped a bus
crash in Marshall, Minn.,
yesterday with minor inju-
ries. Marilyn is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Larry
Straughan. The collision
of the chartered Trailways
bus and a semi-tractor truck
killed Pearl McNellis, 35,
Saratoga, Wyo., a counselor
on the trip, and injured 21
of the 40 persons aboard.
Bus driver Harry Wheeler,
31, of Portland, underwent
surgery at the Marshall
hospital. The young people,
