HERMISTON
Smith inds hidden medallion,
wins ice cream social block party
By TAMMY MALGESINI
East Oregonian
A irm believer in the
Neighborhood
Watch
program, Dorothy Smith
found the hidden treasure,
which is part of the National
Night Out festivities in
Hermiston.
Smith was thrilled to
ind the golden medallion,
winning an ice cream social
block party during Tuesday’s
National Night Out event in
Hermiston.
“I’m a big advocate of
our neighbors knowing who
we are,” Smith said. “We try
to do stuff every year as a
neighborhood.”
Smith said they try to
keep neighbors connected
by sharing email addresses
and phone numbers. Erica
Sandoval, Hermiston Police
Department crime preven-
tion/youth services oficer,
said this is exactly the type
of things neighbors can do to
help reduce crime.
National Night Out,
Sandoval said, encourages
people to get out and meet
their neighbors. It also
provides an opportunity for
people to mingle with police
and other irst responders in
a relaxed atmosphere.
Winning the party came
at a perfect time, Smith
said, as several new houses
have been constructed in the
neighborhood, as well as
new neighbors moving into
a couple of homes.
“This will be a good way
to connect with the new
neighbors,” she said.
Reading the clues and
discussing it with her
husband, Dave, Dorothy
found

Dorothy Smith found the hidden medallion behind
two letters on the sign at the Eastern Oregon Higher
Education Center. The annual treasure hunt is part of
the National Night Out festivities in Hermiston.
“This will be a

new neighbors.”

tape in the sign at the Eastern
Oregon Higher Education
Center.
Dorothy said Dave was
focused on the word “best”
in the irst clue and was
convinced it was near the
Best Western Hermiston
Inn. However, Dorothy
correctly deduced that it
was near a school, based on
a bonus clue found in this
week’s Hermiston Herald
about putting on “your
thinking caps.” In addition,
from the second clue, she
recognized a reference to
a ‘71 hit — “Signs” by the
Five Man Electrical Band,
also performed by Tesla —
suggested it would be in a
sign.

When Dorothy reached
between two letters on the
sign and found the small
package, she was initially
hesitant to open it.
“I actually thought it was
drugs or something. I was
freaking out,” Dorothy said
with a laugh.
Wrapped tightly with
duct tape, Dave opened it to
reveal the golden medallion.
City oficials and irst
responders will serve ice
cream during the National
Night Out event in Smith’s
neighborhood. The block
party is Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
at Southeast Eighth Street/
Banker Drive.

Corrections
The ticket prices referenced in the July 28 article “SeaPort Airlines working to rebuilt
customer conidence after bankruptcy” need to be clariied. The cheapest price for a one-way
ticket reserved within a week of booking a light is $128.50, but the cost lowers the further
in advance a customer books a light. The cheapest light found on SeaPort’s website was
$73.50, but SeaPort President Tim Sieber said prices run as low as $49.
