Supposing you were a demure little lady
coming into Pendleton for a irst visit arriving
at the depot yesterday afternoon about 5
o’clock when all the trains were in and the
people were running here and there and the
cabbies yelling and the conductors calling
and general confusion prevailing, and you
grabbed a suit case and rushed away with your
friends and had a nice visit until time to retire
when you opened up that suit case and found
that you were supposed to sleep in a pair
of chaps, high-heeled cowboy boots, sliver
mounted spurs, an extremely noisy shirt and a
buckskin lariat. That is really what happened
to a young lady last evening and this morning
she was down town bright and early trying to
ind the owner of the cowboy suit case and
make a very desirable exchange with him.
She described the contents of the suit case she
had to T. F. O’Brien, local agent of the O.-W.
R. & N., and he immediately tied the ribbon
on Danny Clark, cowboy and Round-Up
champion steer roper and livestock man for
the railroad, for no other cowboy in the north-
west carries such decidedly nice clothes with
him. Danny didn’t open his suit case when he
retired for the night so the surprise was all the
greater this morning when he was told what
happened.

Specially trained ireighters from the
Heppner district of the Blue Mt. National Forest
were called to a fast spreading blaze between
Bend and Lakeview recently. Loren Lucore,
ire control oficer of the Heppner district, said
the lames covered 60 acres at 4 p.m. Friday
and 150 acres an hour later. A 12-man ire
suppression crew, a special inter-forest group
stationed for the summer at Tupper Ranger
Station near Heppner, was dispatched. Lucore
said the ighters were expected back in the
district by today and that the big blaze, which
got to 850 acre size, was contained Monday.

Six years ago Tony Frost of Pendleton and
Tavito Meza of Yuma, Ariz., received bone
marrow transplants the same day in a Seattle
hospital. The bone marrow donors — Frost’s
then 14-year-old sister, Tammy, and Meza’s
mother, Rosa — were roommates. That was
the start of a keen friendship between the
patients, the donors and well as the recipients,
and their families. The friendship will be
rekindled today when the Mezas stop in Pend-
leton to visit the Frosts. The Mezas are on their
way back to Arizona after traveling to Seattle
for Tavito’s six-year checkup.
