This year’s Umatilla County
Fair court is nearing its most
active week of the year.
Three girls were picked for
the 2016 court: Kira Krum-
bah-Kuhar, JaNessa Prewitt
and Raylee Lehnert. Court
chaperone Alice Newman said
this year’s court well represents
Umatilla County.
From January until June, the
court’s main tasks are to promote
the fair at parades around the
region and volunteer at local
events in a variety of roles.
Once summer rolls around, their
schedule becomes even busier.
The princesses pass out fair
programs, make appearances on
local radio shows and anything
else that is asked of them.
A rule change allowed for
Krumbah-Kuhar, 15, to become
a court princess this year,
following her older sister, Catie,
who was on the 2015 court.

According to Newman, past
applicants were required to be at
least a sophomore in high school
and have a driver’s license. The
hiring committee decided that
rule wasn’t practical, and now
accepts any applicant between
the ages of 14 and 19. Newman
said this change will put less
pressure on older girls to apply
for the court, especially those
who are about to leave home.
“Trying to fi t in a fair court
schedule is much harder to do
when you’re about to go off to
college,” she said.
Newman said this year’s
court is a particularly hard-
working group. Between the
three princesses, they’ve volun-
teered countless hours to local
events and will continue to do
so as fair week nears.
“They’re a working court,”
she said. “They’re not just there
to show up and look pretty.”
