An off-duty jail sergeant,
frustrated in his attempts to
get a friend out of jail, broke
out a window in the Umatilla
County courthouse Sunday.
Tim Roberts, a jailer for four
years, was cited for criminal
mischief, and also faces
disciplinary action within the
department, Sheriff Jim Carey
said. Carey said Roberts went
to the east entrance of the
courthouse and used the jail
phone near the door in an
attempt to learn the amount
of bail and how he could gain
the release of a friend who had
been arrested earlier. In his
frustration, Roberts slammed
his hand against a window and
it broke. Robert was to return
to work today following a
two-day suspension.

If the proposed port of
Umatilla is formed in accor-
dance with the move now
underway among farmers
northwest of the city, the
port commissioners, to be
appointed by the governor,
will have power to bond
the port district and to levy
taxes upon the property in
the district. Unlike the road
subject the people do not vote
on bonding a port district,
the entire matter being in the
hands of the port commission.
Thus the Pitman enterprise for
a concrete roadway costing
$420,000 will be handled by
the port commissioners if the
district is formed.
