Pow wow to showcase American Indian dancing, drumming

arena at Wildhorse Resort & Casino.
The drum has been called
the heartbeat of Mother
Earth — and a pow wow isn’t
possible without drums.
This year’s Wildhorse Pow
Wow host drum is award-win-
ning Cree Confederation, from
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The group took top honors
during the 2015 Wildhorse
Pow Wow.
Pageantry, colors and music
are featured during the 22nd
annual event, which kicks off
Friday with a grand entry at 7
p.m. at the Pow Wow Grounds
at Wildhorse Resort & Casino,
located off Interstate 84 at
Exit 216, Mission. There is no
admission charge.
More than 300 native
dancers — from youngsters
and tribal elders to men and
women of all ages — will
compete for more than
$80,000 in cash and prizes
during the event, which
continues Saturday from 1
p.m. to midnight and Sunday
from 1-9 p.m.
Founded in 2007, Cree
Confederation has traveled
and sung all over Indian
Country. Representing people
of Treaty Six Cree First
Nations, the drumming group
bridges the older pow wow
singing style with the contem-
porary evolution of today’s
vibrant pow wow culture.
They won the 2011 Cana-
dian Aboriginal Music Award
for best contemporary pow
wow album for one of their
CDs, “Pakosíyimitán.”
Dallas Waskahat, the
group’s leader, said they are
truly blessed with a sound
that’s for everyone to enjoy.
In addition, he said their focus
is “singing for the people and
believing in the drum.”
