Milton-Freewater Chamber of
Commerce director to retire
MILTON-FREEWATER — After more
than a decade and a half with the Milton-
Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce,
director Cheryl York is
ready to become Milton-
Freewater’s “most well
known visitor.”
While she’s looking
forward to visiting
friends and family
after she retires July
6, she’s proud of her
accomplishments with
the chamber.
York
York said her most
important contribution
to the job was her attention to detail, which
helped her organize the now defunct Muddy
Frogwater Festival, the chamber’s annual
award dinner and a bevy of other annual
events.
“You just have to pull all the threads
together and make it happen,” she said.
York joked that she was retiring because
she was “old and tired,” a combination of a
persistent medical condition and her desire to
see someone younger take over.
“It’s just time for a change,” she said.
(The chamber) needs new energy. It needs
new ideas. It needs new people.”
York said the board hasn’t yet selected her
successor.
Family holds memorial
service for baby Dominic
DAYTON, Washington — The family of
infant Dominic Freel will hold a memorial
service Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First
Congregational Church-UCC, 214 S. Third
St., Dayton, Washington.
Dominic and his teenage parents
lived in Milton-Freewater. The Umatilla
County District Attorney’s Ofice charged
Dominic’s father with murder and criminal
mistreatment in the boy’s June 8 death. He
was 5 months old.
Abby Smart, 17, Dominic’s mother, is
residing with family in Dayton.
There will be a potluck style dinner
following the service.

Corrections
The June 24 article “Bridge to somewhere” misstated the quality of the streets transferred
from Umatilla County to the city of Pendleton. They are not up to city standards.
The East Oregonian works hard to be accurate and sincerely regrets any errors. If
you notice a mistake in the paper, please call 541-966-0818.
Community foundation
seeks grant applicants
WALLA WALLA — About $350,000
will be awarded as discretionary grants
from the Blue Mountain Community
Foundation.
The grants are intended to improve
the health of the community and to help
low-income, traditionally underserved
people overcome poverty.
Nonproit organizations or public
agencies that serve the community in
several regional counties, including
Umatilla, are eligible to apply. Last year
grant recipients included projects in
Hermiston, Pendleton, Athena and other
parts of Umatilla County.
The application deadline is Friday, July
1 by midnight. To submit a proposal, visit
www.bluemountainfoundation.org and
click on the “Apply Now” button. The
foundation is only able to consider online
applications.
The grants will be announced in
late September. For more information,
contact 509-529-4371 or bmcf@
bluemountainfoundation.org.
Library district discontinues
language program
The Umatilla County Special Library
District Board recently adopted its 2016-17
budget, which resulted in cuts to services
provided.
After reviewing the usage levels of
Mango, the online foreign language
learning database, the board decided not
renew it for the upcoming budget year. It
was determined the program wasn’t being
used to the level to justify the expense.
Formed in 1986, the library district
supports public libraries in Umatilla
County in providing services, programs and
educational opportunities.
For more information, contact Dan Feil
at 541-276-6449 or dan@ucsld.org.
