OBITUARIES
WEDNESDAY
10:52 a.m. - A passerby told Pendleton police she saw
two males break a window of a gray pickup in the parking lot
at Burger King, 601 Southgate Drive, and one male left and
the other stayed with the vehicle.
11:58 a.m. - Two middle school-aged youth threw rocks
onto the road from Grecian Heights Park, 1910 S.W. Athens
Ave., Pendleton.
12:06 p.m. - Pendleton police received a request to check
on a family living on Northeast Anvidon Street, Pendleton. A
caller said four children live there and a 10-12-year-old was
outside Wednesday morning without clothes, and the day
before a woman was in the front yard without pants.
12:45 p.m. - An Irrigon mother asked to talk to a Morrow
County sheriff’s deputy about restricting a male’s access to
her daughter.
1:39 - A woman on the 29500 block of Minnehaha Road,
Hermiston, reported two people tried to push her son into the
irrigation ditch. This was a trespassing problem.
2:25 p.m. - An employee of Woodpecker Truck, 40275
Clark Lane, Pendleton, reported a customer used a credit
card without authorization for several purchases.
3:07 p.m. - An Ione woman reported her adult children
were cussing at her.
5:57 p.m. - Two boys threw rocks at passing cars at
Pendleton Riverside Apartments, 1300 N.W. Carden Ave.,
Pendleton.
6:21 p.m. - A Umatilla resident told police a man in his late
30s sent her inappropriate text messages.
6:24 p.m. - A woman told Pendleton police she may have
received a fraudulent check for $1,760.
7 p.m. - A mother at East Harding Avenue and North
Wayne Street, Stanield, reported she was working outside
and a male over at the neighbor’s home, which has a lot
of trafic, went behind a shed and urinated in front of her
18-year-old daughter.
9:59 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice
responded to a 9-1-1 call about a prowler trying to get into a
house on Patriot Lane, Hermiston. A deputy did not ind any
suspect.
10:32 p.m. - Morrow County sheriff’s deputies responded
to reports of gunshots near the Shell station on Highway 730,
Irrigon. Another caller at 10:52 p.m. reported someone was
setting off bombs around Southeast Fourth Street, Irrigon.
The investigation revealed the cause was ireworks.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•Pendleton police arrested a wanted man after chasing
him down and shooting him with a Taser stun gun.
Joey Adair Crooke, 23, of Pendleton, had an outstanding
felony warrant for his arrest, according to Pendleton Police
Chief Stuart Roberts, when an oficer spotted him around 11
a.m. riding as a passenger in a vehicle. The cop stopped the
car, and Crooke took off running, ignoring police commands
to stop.
Crooke entered a nearby residence and attempted to
hide, Roberts stated, and led again when the oficer arrived.
Again Crooke ignored demands to stop.
The foot chase continued until Crooke paused.
Roberts reported the oficer told Crooke to stop, give up
or face the consequences at the hot end of a Taser.
“Crooke ignored the oficer, and attempted to run,”
Roberts reported, “which is when he was tased.”
Roberts stated Crooke told police he bolted because he
thought he had a warrant and did not want to go to jail.
He also conirmed he heard and disregarded all of the
oficer’s commands. He isnow in the Umatilla County Jail,
Pendleton.
•A report of a door-to-door sales scam led Pendleton
police to arrest a Salem man on an outstanding statewide
misdemeanor warrant.
A caller at 12:52 p.m. reported two young men, one black
and one white, were on Northwest Johns Landing “selling
scam items” for a contest. Police looked around the area and
found James Lowell Wilborn, 20, on nearby Northwest Fourth
Street and arrested him on the warrant and booked him into
the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton.
•Milton-Freewater police arrested Ricky Angel Pardo, 23,
of 302 S.E. 19th St., Milton-Freewater, for irst-degree theft.

85, passed away June 6, 2016
in La Grande, Ore. She was
born September 16, 1930,
in Oklahoma, the eldest
daughter of Glenn Lewis
Sr. and Esther Lee
Motanic Lewis.
She was an
enrolled citizen of
the Umatilla Tribe.
She grew up in
various locations
throughout
the
West as her parents
worked for the
Indian
Service,
along with her
sister
Marianne Lewis
Lewis,
Glenn
Lewis Jr., and Bette Paulene
Lewis. She attained her
nursing degree in the 1950s,
married Richard Thickstun
and moved to Chatham, N.J.,
in the late 1950s where they
raised their children David,
Lisa and Paul and she worked
as an ER and cardiac nurse.
She moved to Oregon in
the 1980s, living in Tigard,
and began her art business,
then returned to the Umatilla
Reservation where she
worked for Yellow-
hawk Tribal Health
Center for ive years
and also served on
the Tribal Health
Commission.
She
was
a
founding
board
member of Crow’s
Shadow and an
accomplished
artist in beadwork,
jewelry
and
weaving.
She is preceded in death
by her three siblings, her
parents, grandparents and
cousins. Her three children,
six grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren remain.
At her behest there will be
no services.

June 14, 2016, at Ashley
Manor in Pendleton. She was
76 years old. No service will

She was born
June 1, 1940,
in
Pasadena,
California,
to
William Lawrence
and Ethel Marie Risley
(Nickols) Powers,
the youngest of four girls.
She was raised in California
until the family moved to
Pendleton, Oregon. She was
a member of the Seventh-day
Adventist Church.
On September 7, 1958,
Katie married Forrest L.
Baker in Pendleton, where
they lived for thirty years,
raising their four children.
They later divorced. On
January 27, 1990, she
married Earl Risley in Lacey,
Washington. They lived in
Bovill, Idaho, for almost 15
years before returning to the
Pendleton area.
Her hobbies included
gardening, both water and
oil painting, and singing
in church. She loved to
travel (the beach was her
favorite), go to the Pendleton
Round-Up and watch old
movies. She loved animals
and bird watching. Katie had
Alzheimer’s for 16 years,
but was still in good spirits
and enjoyed visits with her
family. Her outlook on life
was acceptance and toler-
ance of anyone as long as
what they were doing wasn’t
hurting others.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, sister
Margaret “Peggy” Baker,
husband Earl Risley and
ex-husband Forrest L. Baker.
She is survived
by
