Virginia Lee Garton, 91,
of Pendleton, Ore., passed
away May 31, 2016, at a
local care facility. Funeral
services will be held at 1:00
p.m. on Thursday, June 16,
2016, at Pendleton Pioneer
Chapel,
Folsom-Bishop
with interment to follow at
Olney Cemetery. A
Celebration of Life
reception will be
held immediately
following
the
service at the Free
Methodist Church,
1711 S.W. 44th,
Pendleton.
On June 20,
1924, Virginia was
the ifth child born
to Arch and Mary Garton
(Bunch) Whiteley
of
Kingston,
Ark. She attended school
in Kingston. On April 19,
1941, she married Wayne
H. Garton. Her husband was
drafted in 1944. After the
war, they lived in Twin Falls,
Idaho. They subsequently
lived in Milton-Freewater,
Oregon, and then moved to
Pendleton in 1955.
For 35 years, she worked
at many different jobs in
order to help provide for
her family of four sons. She
continued her education and
attended Blue Mountain
Community College to earn
her GED. She went on to
obtain her certiication as
a histology technician. She
had a long career at Interpath
Laboratory. After retirement,
she cooked for Camlu
Retirement Home. Virginia
was an excellent cook and
was also very creative and
talented with her sewing and
crafts. It gave her great joy
to make quilts, clothes and
baby blankets for her friends
and family.
She
could
always
provide good meals and
sleeping accommodations
for unexpected guests, even
when there were seemingly
none available. She loved
to host family gatherings.
Visits by friends and family
were special times for her.
Above all else, she loved her
family, both immediate and
extended.
Survivors
include her four
sons and their
wives: Larry and
Joan, Phil and
Mo, and Rick and
Diane, all of Pend-
leton, and Doug and
Teri of La Grande;
and sisters Blanche
Pratt of Santa Quin,
Utah, and Marietta
James of Twin
Falls, Idaho. She
is also survived by
seven grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her husband Wayne;
her parents; brother Noble
Whiteley; sisters Ruby Head,
Midge Moore and Berniece
Bolinger; and grandson
Christian Garton.
Virginia was a member of
the Free Methodist Church.
She was loved by all who
came in contact with her.
Her selless devotion to her
family was awe-inspiring.
She was a very strong person
who suffered through many
trials and tribulations with
her faith and dignity intact.
Her family wishes to
express their heartfelt thanks
to the management and staff
at Suttle Care and Retirement
and also to the St. Anthony
Hospice staff.

MONDAY
4:33 a.m. - Two males threatened a third at Nelly’s Super
Tacos, 755 S. Highway 395, Hermiston.
7:56 a.m. - Union Paciic Railroad reported a “rider” was
on a train 30 minutes from Pendleton and wanted police to
remove the person when the train stopped at Southeast Court
Place and 14th Street.
8:49 a.m. - A caller reported the theft of several potted
plants from Olney Cemetery, 865 Tutuilla Road.
11:55 a.m. - Stanield police received a request to check on
a dog that was outside and without water on Chelsea Lane.
12:56 p.m. - A man asked Hermiston police to send an
oficer to the parking lot of Wal-Mart, 1350 N. First St. He
said another customer scratched his vehicle with a cart, then
starting yelling and denied causing the damage.
12:57 p.m. - Two males were in a ight at Roloff Lane and
Cobb Road, Milton-Freewater. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Ofice did not ind any ighters.
12:58 p.m. - The manager of the Hermiston movie theater
brought in multiple “lost and found” items to the Hermiston
Police Department, 330 S. First St.
1:27 p.m. - Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan reported
he received a complaint about three starving horses on
Nelson Lane off Northwest 11th Street and asked to have a
deputy check it out.
1:29 p.m. - The police department of Auburn, New York,
told local law enforcement a Uhaul rented in Boardman was
not returned to the rental agent.
1:35 p.m. - A man who recently got out of jail was at the
Westgate Shell Station, 4412 Westgate, Pendleton, and
yelled at customers, bothered them for a ride, and argued
with a store manager before police were called to remove the
person.
1:35 p.m. - An Irrigon woman reported someone she once
was in a relationship with hacked her Facebook page and is
posting personal pictures and inappropriate videos.
3:29 p.m. - A caller told Pendleton police his girlfriend was
the victim of an assault but he did not know where she was or
if she needed medical help.
3:49 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report that a man
with a ponytail and wearing old blue jeans and dirty tan T-shirt
left a store on South Main Street about 15 minutes ago. When
he irst entered the store, a woman’s little dog barked at him
and he threatened to get gun and shoot it.
6:11 p.m. - A woman told the Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Ofice she found a Barbie doll with a slice in the neck on the
sign on Suiste Lane, and someone also stuck stuffed animals
in the trees. These are on a road on her private property and
unnerved her, she said, and she added she thought it was
directed toward her as she has had problems and confronta-
tions with people driving through her property.
7:13 p.m. - A Pendleton woman on Southwest Hailey Place
complained about a neighbor lettings his dog poop in her yard.
She said she has asked him to stop but it continues, she has
video of this and he became belligerent when her daughter
confronted him.
8:23 p.m. - A male called the Morrow County Sheriff’s
Ofice and said, “No matter how long it takes, I’m going to
destroy this county,” then hung up.
9:42 p.m. - The owner of a German shepherd on Raymond
Street, Umatilla, told police someone stole the dog, posted
about it on social media and will not return it.
10:14 p.m. - Mischief makers threw eggs at a house on
Southwest Larkin Court, Hermiston. The owner said it just
happened and he had “a pretty good idea who did it.”
10:31 p.m. - Hermiston police received a report of domestic
violence on East Oregon Avenue.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•Oregon State Police arrested John Verl Smith, 55, of
Echo, for driving under the inluence of intoxicants, reckless
driving, and unlawful possession of a irearm. OSP also cited
Smith for having an open container of alcohol.
Margaret Alice Alleman,
81, passed away on June
3, 2016, at the Chaplaincy
Hospice house surrounded by
her children. She was born in
Boise, Idaho, to Roy Monroe
and Dorothy Isgar.
She graduated from
Hermiston High School and
married her high
school sweetheart,
Vince
Alleman.
They raised nine
children. Her love
and joy were her
children. Margaret
loved traveling the
world visiting her
kids and grandkids,
which were spread
out from Oregon,
Idaho, California, Alleman
Guam,
Montana
and Alaska.
She was a very creative
and talented tole painter,
which became one of her
passions. She would paint on
any surface provided to her
from wood, plaster to metal.
She also loved sewing and
making jean quilts for all her
kids and grandkids.
Margaret leaves behind
seven sons and two daugh-
ters: Perry (Anne), Rod
(Cindy), Ken (Cathy), Don
(Jackie), Joan, David (Tami),
Todd (Sabra), Dianna and
Paul (Debbie). In addition,
she leaves several grandchil-
dren and great-grandchildren,
too numerous to count, as she
would say with a laugh. She
will be missed by her many
friends as well.

was born in Glendale,
California, on November
3, 1944. He grew up in
Burney and attended Fall
River High School. He was
living in Milton-Freewater,
Oregon, at the time of his
death, May 26, 2016.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Dr. Joseph
and Mrs. Jerry Churney, his
brothers Joe Churney and
Cameron Nelson, and sister-
in-law Margie Nelson. He is
survived by his son Chuck
of Shasta Lake; sister Jennie
Cain (Wes) of Pendleton,
Oregon; brothers LeRoy
Nelson of Milton-Free-
water,
Mike
Churney
(Karen) of Burney, Myron
Nelson (Denise) of San
Dimas and Rodger Nelson
of Palmdale; sister-in-law
Ann Churney of Burney;
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Dan loved working on
cars. He operated an auto
body shop in Burney in
the 1970s and worked at
Capital Automotive in San
Jose. He treasured the many
bike rides on his Harley and
faithfully participated in the
Kool April Nites Car Show
with the latest of many
collector cars he bought and
artfully restored.
Services in Burney will
be at a later date.

Donald Ivan “Donny” Briggs, 75, of Pendleton died
Friday, June 3, 2016, in Pendleton. He was born Jan.
30, 1941, in La Grande. A graveside service will be held
Saturday, June 18 at 12 noon at Olney Cemetery, Pend-
leton, followed by a celebration of life at the Pendleton
Eagles Lodge. Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, Folsom-Bishop,
