SPORTS WEEKEND, JUNE 4-5, 2016 PILOT ROCK Sports shorts Blue Mountain names Athletes of the Year PENDLETON — Blue Mountain Community College has named Savannah Heugly and Nolan Weber as its 2015-2016 recipients of the Wally McCrae Student Athletes of the Year. Heugly maintained a 3.5 GPA at BMCC while dominating the basketball court for the Timberwolves, averaging 21.2 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. She recently signed with Western Oregon University to continue her basketball career. Weber, a shortstop on the Timberwolves baseball team, hit .212 with three home runs in 104 at-bats in 2016, and maintained a 3.33 GPA in the classroom. Weber plans to attend Washington State University and walk on to the baseball team starting in the fall. Pendleton senior fi nalist for Oregon Sports Award PENDLETON — Pendleton Buckaroos senior outfi elder Alexis Morrison is one of three fi nalists for the Prep Softball Player of the Year in the state of Oregon. The award FACES will be handed out at the 64th annual Oregon Sports Awards hosted by Nike on Monday evening at the Nike World Morrison Headquarters in Beaverton. Morrison is up against Marist’s Lauren Burke and Westview’s Abby Greer for the award. Morrison led the Buckaroos to a 25-5 overall record in 2016, a CRC championship and a trip to the Class 5A semifi nals, hitting .561 with nine home runs, 30 RBI and 44 runs scored. KEIZER — The Stanfi eld Tigers stopped Santiam Christian’s comeback bid cold with a play at the plate, and when the game went into extra innings scored the go-ahead runs on hits by Ryan Bailey and Brody Woods to beat the Eagles 5-4 in 10 innings Friday in the OSAA 3A state championship. Dylan Grogan pitched eight innings for the Tigers, and Woods came off short rest to throw the fi nal two for his third win of the postseason. It was the second state title for the Tigers under head coach Bryan Johnson, who coached his fi nal game for the Tigers on Friday, and got one last ice shower as the team celebrated on the fi eld. “It couldn’t have ended any better. 3A Championship Stanfi eld Santiam Christian 5 4 I’m just so happy we were able to get one for these kids,” said Johnson, who also coach the Tigers to the 2A/1A title in 2011. “Both teams, you’ve got to give them credit.
