SPORTS Tuesday, May 31, 2016 East Oregonian Page 3B NAIA TRACK: EOU wins three titles BEAVERS: Players taking it personally Continued from 1B in the javelin. Barnett was third going into his inal throw, and launched the javelin nearly a foot past Saldana, who had taken the lead on his ifth throw with a school-record mark of 203-2.5. “It was a tight competition, it was a lot of fun to compete that hard and come out on top,” Barnett told CarrollAth- letics.com. “Coach (Jimmy Stanton) told me before my ifth throw to get some adren- aline pumping. On my last one I got excited about it and got a grunt on it. I was awesome to see the spear ly.” Barnett’s title was the irst for any Saints athlete in a throwing event. “Coach Van Diest always talks about ‘it’s the gold helmet’ you are doing it for gold helmet. Even though we don’t have helmets but we represent Carroll and we represent the Saints,” he said. “To be able to stand on top of the podium and represent your school and show everyone what it means to be a Saint is an exciting opportunity.” He also gained some familial bragging rights after growing up the shadow of older brothers Paul and John, who each won national foot- ball titles with the Saints. “I am from a family of nine and there is always compe- tition,” Barnett said. “My brothers have been national champions but I am the only All-American. I’m the baby so it will probably sting a little that I can say that.” Torres earned the second of her All-America honors by placing third in the 800 on Saturday with a personal record of 2:10.76. Breaking the 2:11 barrier had been a goal of hers since freshman year. “I set my goal to have one great race to take with me that I could look back on for the rest of my life and say that was my career and this was it,” Torres said. “I can’t even describe the feeling right now. It was so emotional. It was just great to know that I will be able to look back on this for years to come knowing that I met my goal.” On Friday, Torres ran the second leg for the fourth-place 4x800 relay team that was fourth with a time of 9:06.30. The team led most of the race, but was passed in the inal three laps. Schmidt placed fourth in javelin with a throw of 151-6.75. EOU MEN HAVE RECORD MEET A pair of national titles and a school record for points highlighted the Mountaineer men’s meet. Eastern totaled 39 points for ifth, the program’s top inish in history, and senior Ryan Rosenau and junior Eric England won national titles. Rosenau won his title in the 400-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 51.71, while England won gold in triple jump with a leap of 52-11 on his inal jump. England also set a school record with a fourth-place long jump of 24-5.5. Senior Talitha Fagen also won a national title for the EOU women in pole vault with a school-record height of 3.9 meters. Also setting a school record for the EOU women was junior Rachel Roelle with her time of 11:17.58 in steeplechase that was good for 16th. Continued from 1B According to the NCAA Division 1 Baseball Committee, the Beavers were the second team out behind North Carolina (34-21). The last three in were Southeastern Louisiana (39-19), Nebraska (37-20) and South Alabama (40-20). Bubble teams Washington (32-21) and Georgia Tech (36-23) also made the ield. South Alabama Athletic Director Joel Erdmann is the chair of the selection committee, which also includes Georgia Tech AD Mike Bobinski. Washington coach Lindsay Meggs is a Pac-12 advisor for the committee. OSU took two of three from the Huskies and inished 11 spots higher in the RPI, 44 to 55. Nebraska (48), South Alabama (48) and at-large No. 2 seed Minnesota (51) also had weaker RPIs than the Beavers. “It’s a horrible feeling,” junior outielder Kyle Nobach said. “You work for something so hard and you put everything you’ve got into something and one of the worst things in sports is not succeeding and getting what you want.” OSU began the year 16-2 but was up-and- down the rest of the way. The team was swept on the road at California and Arizona while suffering a bad home loss to Oregon. But the Beavers won ive of their last six, including three consecutive shutouts against UCLA, to put themselves in a position to be selected. “I’ve been on that coin and been excited and been disappointed all throughout the many, many years,” coach Pat Casey said after Sunday’s inale. “I would hope that we did what we needed to do. … I understand that there’s some games that we lost that could hurt us, but I’m conident that we have done what we needed to do to get in the tournament.” Unfortunately for the Beavers, it wasn’t enough. Hamilton said the team sat in silence for about a minute after the inal regional was unveiled. He said Casey gave a short speech and everyone departed. “I think we were all kind of in a state of disbelief,” Hamilton said. “We didn’t know what to do or what to say.” Arizona State (34-21), which OSU swept, is a No. 2 seed in the Fort Worth, Texas, regional. Arizona (38-20) is seeded second in Lafayette, Louisiana, while the Huskies are a No. 3 seed in Nashville. Fresh off its irst Pac-12 title, Utah (25-27) is the No. 4 seed in Oxford, Mississippi. No Pac-12 teams from Oregon or Cali- fornia made the ield of 64. Nobach, who was back in the weight room shortly after the selection show, said he’s taking the snub personally. “We’re coming. It’s a complete insult and the selection committee, that’s there thing,” Nobach said. “We controlled what we can control and didn’t give up a run in the last 27 innings. We won four straight games. “I’ve never really felt like this in a sporting event. When something doesn’t go your way, the only thing to do is keep working, leave no doubt, and just show everybody who we are and come back with that ire in our bellies for the entire season.” CLASSIFIED M ARK ETPL A C E Pla ce cla ssified a d s on lin e a t w w w.ea storeg on m a rketp la ce.com or ca ll 5 4 1-278-26 78 Special Notices 10 Homes for Sale, Pendleton 100 CLASSIFIED LINE AD DEADLINES Edition: East Oregonian Tuesday 3pm Monday Wednesday 3pm Tuesday Thursday 3pm Wednesday Friday 3pm Thursday Saturday 3pm Friday Hermiston Herald Wednesday 3pm Monday Call Chris 541-278-2678 classifieds@ eastoregonian.com PLEASE CHECK YOUR AD ON THE FIRST DAY OF PUBLICATION.
