where his two older brothers also
played — including quarterback
John Barnett, who helped the
Saints capture the program’s ifth
NAIA title in 2007. Volleyball
then brought the 6-foot, strong-
armed Schmidt to Helena, where
she eventually earned All-Frontier
Conference honors twice and
helped Carroll earn a share of the
Frontier Conference crown last fall.
Now, both juniors eligibil-
ity-wise, they’ve turned their
attention back to the javelin, where
the two were expected to medal at
this week’s NAIA Track and Field

Alabama.
For the men, Barnett entered the
country’s No. 2 mark with a throw

Schmidt was ranked No. 5 with a
mark of 149-0.
A year ago, Schmidt, who had
previously spent two years away
from track, earned All-American
status after placing seventh at the
NAIA championships with a toss a
toss of 136-02.
She’s already bested that by 13
feet this spring.
Barnett, who placed 11th overall
(186-0) at the 2015 NAIA champi-
onships, has also been notching the
best throws of his life. It took him
nearly four years to best the 192-feet
throw he had as a junior in school.
“I think I’m the one that just
shows up and naturally chucks it,
and (Barnett) is the one with the
technique,” Schmidt said.
Barnett didn’t trivialize her
efforts as much as she did.
“I think it takes both ability and
technique to do it,” he replied. “You
can get a muscle-head out there, but
if he doesn’t have technique he’s
not going to do well.”
Carroll throwing coach Jimmy
Stanton points to different elements
in the development of Barnett and
Schmidt, who both own program
records.
“I think some of it is maturity,
as David has continued his athletic
climb at Carroll,” Stanton said.
“He approached practice with a
different attitude this year, and
wanted to make progress other than
just throwing it really hard.”
Schmidt, who exhausted her
eligibility in volleyball and still has
one year of track to burn, has made
the appropriate physical strides.
“Crystal is just in a lot better
shape,” Stanton said. “Her body
transformation is stronger, and she
is just a lot more conident.”
In high school, Barnett igured

named the East Oregonian’s Athlete of
the Week for May 15-21.
East Oregonian: What’s your favorite

to wear something similar to when I had

track would pay for his college,
but after a senior season in which
he was named the Columbia River
Conference’s Defensive MVP, that
plan changed.
Carroll gave him the opportunity
to pursue both sports. He is vying
for his irst starting job at defensive
end and has also been Carroll’s
long snapper.
Track was off Schmidt’s radar
for two years despite generating
Division I offers in high school,
including Penn State and Eastern
Washington as a heptathlete.
They’ve both been on the
podium on the same day in high
school.
They’re hoping to mimic that
feat now, as collegians.
“Just to be two All-Americans,
out of the same event, just a year
apart, out of the same Oregon town,
would be pretty cool,” Barnett said.

The Loggers averaged 16.7 runs
a game this season, but that total
was padded by a weak schedule
that featured 30-run wins over
lowly-ranked teams.
The
defending-champion
Rockets went 2-1 against Burns
this season, taking the series by a
combined score of 30-10, and is
averaging 13.25 runs during its
