Tennis 5A BOYS & GIRLS PENDLETON — After the irst three rounds of the boys 5A Special District 1 tennis tournament were completed on a warm, sunny day in Hermiston on Friday, mother nature apparently decided to add some intrigue for the inal two rounds on Saturday. Because of torrential rains, the teams were forced to relo- cate to the indoor facilities of the Pendleton Tennis Center. There, the Summit Storm clinched the district champi- onship with 38 points ahead of Mountain View in second with 16.5 points and Hermiston in third with 10.5 points. Hermiston still had singles player Jacob Snell and doubles pair Race Latham and Cameron Meade alive for day two, but both ended up with fourth place inishes with defeats in the semii- nals. Snell fell to Summit’s Cole Younger in three sets, winning the irst set 6-3 before falling 7-6 and 6-3. Latham and Meade fell to the Bend duo of Aaron Banquer- Glenn and Nicolas Campbell in two sets 6-4 and 6-2. Summit’s Carter Quigley, the bracket’s No. 1 seed, won the singles title, and Summit’s Andy Jones and Dylan Warren won the doubles title. The three Hermiston players will now prepare for the 5A state tournament, which will kick off on Thursday at the Portland Tennis Center. In 5A girls action, neither Hermiston or Pendleton qual- iied any competitors for the state tournament. Champions from the Special District 1 inals at Sunriver North Tennis Pavilion were Summit junior Autumn Layden and the Bend duo of sophomore Kyla Collier and Jesse Vezo. SMALL SCHOOLS ONTARIO — La Grande’s Josh Ebel outlasted Ione’s Kai Arbogast to claim the Special District 4 boys singles title on Saturday at Treasure Valley Community College. Ebel won the irst set 6-4, Arbogast came back with a 6-4 win in the second, and Ebel edged him 7-5 in the third. Arbogast was the only player from a local school to qualify for the state tourna- ment. La Grande’s Matt Wisdom and John Schiller won the boys doubles title 7-5, 6-4 over Baker’s Brandon Stairs and Ryan Schwin. Baker senior Gracie Higgins won the girls singles title 6-1, 6-2 over Vale’s Tess McFetridge. The doubles championship went to Vale’s Drew Dobney and Abby Hamilton with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ontario’s Jandee Nakamura and Haliegh Taylor. Vale won the boys and girls team titles. Track & Field GOL DISTRICTS ONTARIO — The Mac-Hi Pioneers won a combined ive gold medals in throwing events at Satur- day’s Greater Oregon League district inals, and advanced seven athletes to the state championships in Eugene. Senior Amber Wells will compete at state in three events after winning the shot put (32 feet, six inches) and discus (107-7) and placing second in javelin (114-5). Freshman Bianca Garcia won the javelin title with a throw of 114-8. Junior Delaney Karrels was second in high jump (4-8) and senior Alicia Walter was second in pole vault (8-0). Winning gold for the Pioneers boys were senior Cole Skramstad in javelin (154-2) and junior Landon Warne in discus (133-11). Junior Donald Clark also qualiied for this week’s state meet by placing second in discus (129-4). EOL DISTRICTS UMATILLA — Fabian Cardenas swept the distance races and the Umatilla boys relays both came in with gold inishes to lead the Vikings to second place at the Eastern Oregon League district meet on Saturday. Eight Vikings boys qualiied for the state meet individually. Cardenas beat Umatilla freshman Zayne Troeger in both the 1,500 meters and 3,000, and will take the top-ranked time in the state into both races this week in Eugene. He ran the 1,500 in 4:03.59 and the 3,000 in 8:55.97. Vikings freshman Trent Durfey edged senior team- mate Armando Mendoza for the 110-meter hurdles gold, and Mendoza also qualiied for state in the 300 hurdles with another silver. Also earning state berths with second-place inishes were junior Sebastian Trujillo in shot put (39 feet, six inches), junior Josh Surber in discus (108-11) and freshman Julian Gutierrez in high jump (5-8). Nancy Ortiz led the Umatilla girls with three state berths. She won the 100 hurdles (16.97) and 300 hurdles (50.49) and was second in the 100 meters (13.41). Vikings junior Aleesha Watson won the javelin title with a throw of 112-3, and sophomore Maria More- no-Mendez was second (108- 1). Also, the 4x100 relay team placed second (53.23). Riverside had two cham- pions and three total state qualiiers emerge from the meet. Junior Selene Andrade won the girls’ 1,500 meters in 5:26.96 and junior Alejandro Llamas won the boys’ 800 in 2:08.54. Also earning a state berth was junior Ricardo Mendoza by placing second in javelin (136-2). Nyssa won both the boys and girls team titles. SD3 DISTRICTS MORO — The Helix Grizzlies won gold in six of 15 events and won silver in both relays to run away with the girls team title at the Special District 3 Champion- ships on Saturday. MaKenzie Mize won both the shot put and discus with state-leading throws of 35 feet, 11.75 inches, and 120-9, respectively. Lucy Case beat teammates to win both the 1,500 meters (5 minutes, 17.80 seconds) and 3,000 (12:15.98), and Emma Fehrenbacker and Bethany Newtson added titles in the 400 (1:04.88) and 800 (2:38.25), respectively. Helix inished with 165 team points and South Wasco was second with 116. Sam Carlson won the only district title for the Helix boys in discus (126-1) and was second in shot put (43-1.75). Baseball HEPPNER 13, CULVER 6 — At Culver, the Heppner Mustangs rode a complete game from starter Patrick Collins to end the regular season with a 13-6 over the Culver Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. Collins struck out 10 Bulldogs in the game and gave up eight hits six runs (four earned) and three walks to earn the win. The Mustangs (5-13, 4-7 SD6) offense backed Collins up by cranking out 12 hits to get their 13 runs, with Collins picking up two of the hits with a double and one RBI. Jake Lindsay led the Mustangs with four hits on the day, inishing 4-5 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. Kevin Murray also picked up two hits at the dish with two runs, while Will Lutcher led the team with three runs scored. E 3 6 IRRIGON 5-4, SHERMAN 0-15 — At Irrigon, Austin Rice threw a no-hitter and the Knights won the irst half of their Special District 6 doubleheader 5-0 to lock up the league title on Saturday. Rice struck out eight and walked four in the seven-in- ning complete game, and also drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to push in the eventual game-winning run. Hayden White then scored on a balk, and inished 2 for 2 with two RBI and one run. Fredy Vera was 2 for 4 with a run for Irrigon (15-5, 10-2 SD6). The Huskies (17-7, 8-4) bounced back for a 15-4 win in Game 2, and were led by Brett Troutman (2 for 4, three runs) and Bradley Moe (2 for 5, three RBI). Softball PILOT ROCK 12-11, IRRIGON 2-4 — At Irrigon, the Pilot Rock Rockets wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a sweep of Irrigon to extend its winning streak to six games. The Rockets (22-3, 14-1 SD6) hit three home runs on the day, led by Teyha Ostrom with two — her irst two of the season — and Sara Weinke with one. Weinke had a dominant day overall on offense, combining for ive hits, three runs scored and six RBI to go with her home run. Other top performers for the Rockets were Bekah Roe with four hits and four runs scored and Ostrom had ive hits, three runs scored and ive RBI. Ostrom started game one in the pitching circle and struck out ive Knights in ive innings, and gave up three hits and two runs.
