Page 2B SPORTS East Oregonian Tuesday, May 10, 2016 BLAZERS: Lillard scores 17 points DAWGS: Take 2nd in CRC Continued from 1B left, and both Lillard and Curry missed to force the OT. Curry led the Warriors to an NBA-record 73 wins in the regular season, a year after leading the team to its irst NBA championship in 40 years. He averaged just over 30 points per game this season. The Trail Blazers narrowed the series to 2-1 on Saturday night when Lillard scored 40 points in a 120-108 Portland victory while Golden State was still without its star guard. The Blazers became the only team to defeat the Warriors twice this season. Maurice Harkless, who had been icing his hip during Game 3, hit Portland’s irst 3-pointer of the night. Lillard hit two more 3s as the Blazers took an early 12-2 lead. Curry came in off the bench with 5:56 left in the irst quarter and Portland up 16-2. His only points in the quarter came off a pair of jumpers before he went back to the bench. Livingston felt he was fouled just before halftime and was thrown out after arguing with referee Scott Foster. The 12-year veteran guard was averaging 12.1 points and 5.5 assists in the playoffs. He had started six of the eight playoff games while Curry nursed his knee injury. Portland led 67-57 at the half, scoring a franchise playoff-record 41 points in the second quarter alone. Lillard led all scorers with 17 points. Thompson’s 3-pointer and Curry’s driving layup capped a 14-5 run, pulling the Warriors within three. Thompson’s 3-pointer put the Warriors ahead 79-78. CURRY’S NUMBERS Curry led the league in scoring during the regular season with 30.1 points per game and broke his own record with 402 3-pointers. He also averaged 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds, led the NBA with 2.1 steals per game, while shooting 50.4 percent from the ield, 45.4 percent from 3-point range and 90.8 percent from the foul line. HEAT 94, RAPTORS 87, OT — At Miami, Dwyane Wade scored 30 points, Goran Dragic had a huge three-point play late in overtime and the Miami Heat beat the Toronto Raptors on Monday night to tie their Eastern Confer- ence semiinal series at 2-2. Dragic and Joe Johnson each scored 15 for the Heat, who rallied from a nine-point deicit in the fourth quarter. Game 5 is in Toronto on Wednesday night. Terrence Ross and Cory Joseph each scored 14 for Toronto, which shot 39 percent. Sexton (2-for-3, walk) and Edmiston both had clutch hits to help the Bulldogs extend their lead to 5-2 in the fourth. “This was by far my best hitting performance of the season,” said Edmiston. “It sure looked like we had a good chance to win. The last inning was tough and (Hood River) came back to get the win. It’s tough to lose like that. We’ve had a really fun season though. It’s important for us to bounce back and get a win against Pendleton and that’s what we’re expecting to do. We’ll get ready for the (state playoffs) play-in round and we’ll play our hearts out in that game too.” Two scoreless innings followed as it remained a 5-2 Bulldog lead in the seventh, which set up the dramatic and exciting conclusion (for Hood River fans). “I’m proud of the boys for having such a good season,” said Hawkins. “We have four seniors (Sexton, Edmiston, Root, Robles) who are very good team leaders and the other guys kind of follow their example. We played a good game today and that’s what I expected. I’m pleased with where we’re at and now we’ll focus on Pendleton game on Friday.” An Eagle base hit and two walks issued by Sexton loaded the bases in the seventh, and after Root relieved Sexton on the mound the Eagles were able to get two key hits to overcome the Bulldogs. Hermiston, which is locked into second place in the CRC, concludes the league schedule Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Pendleton at Armand Larive Middle School. The OSAA play-in round is scheduled for May 20. ——— Continued from 1B RBI single by HRV’s Montana Kura- hara helped propel the Eagles to the victory. “We played great through six innings, so I’m proud of the boys for playing so well against a very tough team,” said Hawkins. “I really have no reason to complain today, other than the fact that we left a few guys on base. We might’ve been able to get a few more runs and you can never have enough against Hood River. We just need to improve some little things to help us prepare for our inal league game on Friday versus Pendleton.” The teams traded runs in the irst two innings and Hermiston (13-9, 6-4 CRC) took the lead 2-1 when senior Hayden Edmiston (4 for 5, two RBI) scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by junior Kody Moss in the top of the second. The Eagles (19-4, 9-1) responded by tying it 2-2 in the bottom of the second, but wouldn’t score again until the seventh inning. Hermiston’s rock-solid defense proved very effective against Hood River’s potent fourth-ranked offense and its 7.625 runs-per-game average. Led by starting pitcher Tyler Sexton (three strikeouts, four walks, seven hits allowed) and the excellent inield play by inielders Lukas Tolan, Daniel Gossler, Kaden Caldwell and senior shortstop Chase Root, Hermiston held the Eagles scoreless for four consec- utive innings. Hermiston, which won 9-1 on April 26 over Hood River, is probably the only team that has done that this year. “I felt like I pitched well enough to help lead our team to a win and then in the last inning, I thought maybe I jinxed myself a little bit because I thought we could make it a one, two, three inning,” said Sexton. “Chase went to the mound in a tough position with one out and the bases loaded. To ask somebody to do that is just too much to overcome. I think lots of people underestimated us this year since we have just four seniors and we’re a young team. PREPS: Pendleton boys golf, Hermiston softball lock up state postseason berths Continued from 1B Hermiston inished the game with 16 penalties — nine of which came in the second and fourth quarters when the Bulldogs struggled most. “We just weren’t playing together like we needed to,” said Hermiston junior Tucker Salinas. “We need to keep up our consistency and be able to play all four quarters.” The Bulldogs were excited to be playing on Kennison’s artiicial turf and that adrenaline turned into an instant reward when they scored the irst goal on a close shot from sophomore Luke Walchli just over two minutes in. Hermiston scored once more in the quarter, when Brady Christiansen scooped up the ball off a missed Central Valley shot and sprinted down the ield, diced through the Bears’ defense and beat the goalie to tie the game at 2-2 with just 37 seconds left in the quarter. But in the second quarter the Bulldogs hit a bit of a lull, and the Bears outscored Hermiston 7-2 for a 9-4 lead at halftime. Salinas added two third-quarter goals, and the Bulldogs cut their deicit to 11-8 when Walchli scored from close range on an assist by Bradlee Guisti. That was as close as they would get, though, and Central Valley scored four unanswered before Walchli found the net for his third goal to make it 16-9 with 7:47 left in the fourth quarter. Hermiston has just two games left on the season, and next up is the inal home game on Wednesday against Southridge (WA) at 5:30 p.m. at Sunset Elementary. Golf REDMOND — The Pendleton boys golf team punched its ticket to the state tournament on Saturday afternoon with a third-place inish in the 5A Special District 2 tournament at Eagle Crest Resort. Sam Kung was the Bucks’ low scorer on Day 2 with a 76. Nathan Som and Reilly Hegarty inished tied for eighth in the inal standings with 151. Complete irst-round results were not available at press time, and Hermiston’s team score was unknown. Pendleton coach Terry Prouse said Summit was also still on the course when the Bucks inished their round, and she expects them to take the lead into Day 2. Pendleton was tied with Crater with a 360. Leading Pendleton is Haley Greb with a 76. She shot a hole-in-one during her practice round on Sunday, the third in her lifetime. Shelby Greb shot an 87, McKenna Pratt shot 97 and Rylee Harris rounded out the team score with a season-best 102. Megan George shot 108 as Pendleton’s ifth. Prouse said strong winds and fast greens led to some higher-than-normal scores on Monday for all the teams. The inal round is today and the top four teams and top 10 individuals will advance to the state tournament. Softball HERMISTON 6, HOOD RIVER 2 — At Hood River, the Hood River Eagles broke the seal on a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, only to see the Hermiston Bulldogs respond in a big way in the top of the seventh for a 6-2 win on Monday in Columbia River Conference play. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and clinched a state play-in game for the Bulldogs (14-11, 5-6 CRC). M. Kopacz began Hermiston’s at-bat in the seventh with a walk and was followed by S. Stefani with a single. Julissa Almaguer then attempted to bunt them both over, but Hood River (10-14, 3-8) took the out at third. That didn’t matter to Breanna Naylor, who then hit both runners in with a double to tie the score 2-2. Amanda Barron followed with a single up the middle and Kylie Hinkley brought both of them around to score on a line drive to center. Hinkley would later score on a two-out single by Rebecca Engelbrecht, who was then driven in on a single by Ellery Jones. Naylor, who came on to relieve Almaguer in the sixth, got two quick outs in the seventh before back-to-back errors put runners on second and third. Naylor ended the game with her second strikeout, though. The two teams combined for three home runs in the irst two innings of Game 1, and Micha Fortune gave Mac-Hi (20-4, 10-0 GOL) the early lead with a two-run blast in the irst. After Kali Avila hit a solo shot for La Grande (8-12, 4-6) in the second, Abi Biggs answered with a homer for Mac-Hi to lead off their second at-bat. Kaitlyn Slusarenko then scored the eventual game-winner on a Shannon Carter bunt and Mac-Hi added two more runs to lead 6-1 after two. Mallory Copeland pitched the complete game and gave up six hits, two strikeouts and no walks, and also batted 2 for 4 with two doubles and a home run. Copeland started in the circle in Game 2, and the Tigers inally got to her in an eight-run ifth that tied the score 9-9. The Pioneers answered immediately, though, and led off their ifth with singles by Carter and Fortune.
