ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•Umatilla tribal police arrested Christopher Reuben
Selam, 32, of Pendleton, for hit and run causing property
damage, hit and run causing an injury, and contempt of
court.
•Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice arrested Timothy Michael
Large, 46, no address provided, for felony driving under the
inluence of intoxicants.
•Umatilla police arrested Corleone Martinez Lewis, 23, of
Hermiston, for irst-degree theft.
•Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice arrested Jack Dale
Castator, 32, of 70925 Wilson Road, Boardman, for felon in
possession of a weapon and second-degree mischief.
•A Heppner man who rolled his pickup ended up in jail for
driving under the inluence.
An Oregon State Police trooper at about 4 p.m.
responded to a crash of a Toyota Tacoma on Highway 74
near milepost 78 outside Pilot Rock. The driver, Jon David
Hanna, 39, refused to give the trooper his full name or allow
an emergency medical technician to check him.
The trooper arrested Hanna for duii after he “showed
signs of intoxication.”
The trooper also took Hanna to a hospital, where staff
checked him for injuries. The hospital cleared Hanna, and
the trooper put him in the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton.

workshop coming to BMCC

the science and practical
application of non-lethal
wolf deterrents during an
all-day workshop Friday,
May 13 in Pendleton.
The workshop will run
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
Blue Mountain Commu-
nity College, organized
by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture’s Wildlife
Services and Oregon
State University Exten-
sion Service. Topics will
include ongoing research
into breeds of guard
dog; the economics of
predation; collaborative
efforts to manage attacks
on livestock; the role of
non-lethal
deterrents;
and state compensation
for damages caused by
wolves. Presentations will
be followed by a panel
Q-and-A session.

of Fish & Wildlife, will be
on hand, along with repre-
sentatives from the USDA,

Rob Zaklan, beloved
husband, father, son,
brother, pastor and
friend, went home to
His Lord and Savior
April 29, surrounded
by his adoring
family.
He was born in
Pendleton,
Ore.,
to Robert and
Shirley Zaklan, the
youngest of nine
children. His love
of God’s creation
and
backpacking
began in Boy Scouts
where he completed
several
50-miler Zaklan
Afoot Aloat in the
Eagle Cap Wilder-
ness Area.
After graduation from
PHS in 1977, his adventurous
spirit led him to join the
USMC where he served in
communications, and ranked
as an expert rileman. His
tour included travel to Japan,
South Korea, the Philippines
and Taiwan.
He fully surrendered his
life to Christ while attending
Grace Baptist and began a
love for sharing God’s word
while serving with the Salva-
tion Army at the Pendleton
Correctional Facility.
In February 1987 he
married the love of his life,
Teresa Ekleberry. Following
God’s call to full-time ministry,
they moved to Spokane,
Wash., where he attended
Spokane Bible College, and
graduated valedictorian with
a degree in pastoral ministry
in 1991. He faithfully shep-
herded the families
at Bible Baptist
Church in Payette,
Idaho, for the last 24
years.
God
richly
blessed Rob and
Teresa with four
sons — Joshua,
John, Luke and
Ethan. Rob deeply
loved his family
and they were his
irst priority. He
was a “hands on”
father and took great
delight in supporting
his sons in school,
sports and life. He
cherished family.
He was a VFW Lifetime
Member at Post 922, Pend-
leton, Ore.
His authentic relationship
with Christ overlowed as a
devoted husband, committed
father, and faithful shepherd.
He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and
three siblings, Le Roy Nash,
Colleen Roach and John Nash.
Celebration of life service
for Rob will be held Saturday,
May 7 at 2 p.m. at Bible
Baptist Church, 118 S. Main,
Payette, Idaho.

service will be held Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at High View
Cemetery in Ione. Sweeney Mortuary of Heppner is handling
arrangements.

children, and Evie would
always have cookies for
them. Watching the children
play always brought a smile
to her face.

Evie
loved all of the
family activities,
her chosen path
was to be a regis-
tered nurse. She
loved working at
the Grande Ronde
Hospital until it
was time to retire.
Evie was a gracious
lady, setting a
lovely
example
for all who were
fortunate enough
to know her.
Survivors include her

Gayle, Andrew (Colonel
USAF Ret.) with wife Pam,
Anne Miller-Givens with
husband Larry (Umatilla
County commissioner) and
John; nine grandchildren;
and three great-grandchil-
dren.

on January 19,
1921, in Wisconsin
where she was
raised, but after Miller
marrying an Air
Force pilot she
embraced military life with

ceremonies. Moving from
base to base gave her the
opportunity to experience
many areas in the United
States and England.
Evie was not one to be
idle and illed her spare
time with baking, knitting,
needlepoint and gardening.

OBITUARIES
WEDNESDAY
10:16 a.m. - Pendleton police received an emergency call
that 10 juveniles, most of them boys, were by the ice rink at
Roy Raley Park and smoking either marijuana or cigarettes.
11:20 a.m. - Vehicles almost hit a donkey in the road near
Central Pre-Mix of Oregon, 81830 Highway 395, Hermiston.
A man reported he got the animal off the highway and
corralled it.
12:53 p.m. - A Umatilla caller told police her dog got out of
her yard on Fifth Street, and a neighbor tried to run her dog
over. The dog owner hung up, and a dispatcher called back.
The woman said the neighbor is her aunt, and she has been
causing trouble. She said her aunt drove onto her property
and tried to hit the dog.
1:47 p.m. - A grass ire burned 1/4 acre of property off
Diagonal Road in Hermiston.
2:15 p.m. - Pendleton Public Works Department
employees and the city’s code enforcement oficer observed
bushes, trees and grass growing over sidewalks or blocking
views of trafic on Southwest 24th Street and also on
Southwest Perkins Avenue.
5:47 p.m. - A Pilot Rock woman told police her ex-boy-
friend is having his friends follow her and watch her, and she
has a restraining order against the ex.
6:43 p.m. - A caller reported a vehicle struck a dog on the
1800 block of Sixth Street, Umatilla, which lost a leg and was
running toward the police department, 300 Sixth St.
7:06 p.m. - A livestock owner on Ott Road, Hermiston,
told the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice the location of the
suspects who stole her four calves a few weeks ago.
7:07 p.m. - A burglar made off with electronics, binoculars
and $300 worth of cologne from a home on the 100 block of
North Main Street, Milton-Freewater.
7:33 p.m. - Loud banging the last few days in the area of
North Main Street, Milton-Freewater, according to a caller,
could be covering up the sound of gunshots.
8:05 p.m. - Storms uprooted a tree and pulled down a
power line on Craig Road in Hermiston.
8:14 p.m. - A large conifer tree broke at its base and fell
onto another tree and a power line in Hermiston. Paciic
Power shut down the power to the line and ireighters were
able to trim the tree and secure the line.
10:17 p.m. - A rollover accident occurred on Interstate 82
near Hermiston. The driver of the overturned vehicle was the
only occupant and refused transport to the hospital.
10:28 p.m. - Pendleton police received a request to check
on the welfare of a suicidal person.
