RECORDS Wednesday, May 4, 2016 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG 6:18 a.m. - A window was broken out in a vehicle on East Beech Avenue in Hermiston. The stereo was ripped out but left behind. 7:38 a.m. - A Milton-Freewater woman reported the theft of her vehicle from the 100 block of Northeast 13th Avenue. 8:08 a.m. - Umatilla police received a tip about a possible illegal marijuana grow and is investigating. 8:10 a.m. - Umatilla police began an investigation into a guest room break-in at the Quality Inn, 705 Willamette St., Umatilla, and theft of a TV. 9:34 a.m. - A Umatilla woman on B Street reported that Sunday night around 10:30 p.m. she caught a white female near her husband’s car with the door wide open. She said she did not report it at the time because she did not know she could make the report at night. She added strange people started showing up at her house Sunday night after someone pushed a white car there during the weekend. That vehicle was still in front of her house, she said. 11:23 a.m. - A mother asked Pendleton police to check on the welfare of her two children, ages 8 and 10, who have been living with her estranged husband in a home without electricity since February. 11:35 a.m. - A vehicle drove through the chain link fence in the garden department at the Hermiston Wal-Mart. One store worker was struck and injured. 12:37 p.m. - A worker at the Port of Umatilla on Launch Lane and Roxbury Road, Umatilla, reported they were unloading box cars when the smell of ammonia became so strong it was nause- ating. The caller asked police to check it out because he did not think anyone at the port would do anything about it. 12:59 p.m. - Two men parked a red Nissan pickup at a house on Sagebrush Road, Hermiston, then stood on a county road to cast ishing lines over a fence and into a pond on private property. That landowner said they were rude when he talked to them and asked for law enforcement to call. 1 p.m. - A man reported the theft of his binoculars from his vehicle on East Main Street, Ukiah. He said he locked it but left the windows down for his dogs. 2:35 p.m. - A resident on South Washington Street, Weston, drove their backhoe over their neighbor’s yard, leaving marks. 4:05 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice received a report of an Athena man that abuses his dogs. 5:46 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to a report of an assault on Southwest First Street. 8:02 p.m. - A man wearing a DirecTV shirt and claiming to be from DirecTV knocked on a door to a home on East Jennie Avenue, Hermiston. The man had no badge or documentation, and the resident described him as “strange.” He left in a green van with “Genesis” on the side, but cops were unable to ind the man. 9:38 p.m. - The manager of Vista Village, 2801 S.W. Houtama Road, Pendleton, told police a resident banged on the door and yelled for him to come out and was becoming belligerent and wanted the owner’s phone number. 10:09 p.m. - A caller told Pendleton police that two 15-year-old boys were trying to get money out of a man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. 11:39 p.m. - A Milton-Freewater caller on Phillips Road reported a female showed up on his property, she appeared distraught and confused and had no shoes. She also refused to leave. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice reported arresting her but did not identify her or reveal any charges. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Stanield police arrested Roberto Carlos Rivera, 44, address not provided, for unauthorized use of a vehicle. McNary, Ore. April 14, 1956-April 23, 2016 Henry “Bruce” Putman, 60, of McNary, Ore., died Saturday, April 23, 2016, in Portland. He was born April 14, 1956. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 7 at 3 p.m. at 12505 N.E. 151st St., Brush Prairie, Wash. Crown Memorial Center of Portland handled arrangements. Robert S. Zaklan Fruitland, Idaho April 29, 2016 Former Pendleton resident Robert S. Zaklan, 56, of Fruitland, Idaho, died Friday, April 29, 2016, at his home. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at Bible Baptist Church, 118 S. Main St., Payette, Idaho. Bowman Funeral Directors in Garden City, Idaho, handled arrangements. TUMBLEWEED TOAST- Bettyjane Bruner Milton-Freewater March 27, 1923-April 21, 2016 Hermiston May 25, 1933-April 16, 2016 Melvin L. “Mel” Brady of Milton-Freewater passed away April 21, 2016, at Whitman Place in Walla Walla at the age of 93 years. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 30, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater. Concluding services and interment followed in the Milton-Free- water Cemetery. Memorial contri- butions may be made to Wounded Warriors through the funeral home. A reception was held at Grace Presbyte- rian Church, 703 S. Main, Milton-Free- water, immediately following the committal service. A irst-genera- tion American, Mel was born March 27, 1923, in Ione, Brady Ore., the son of Patrick and Marie Peterson Brady. He attended school in Ione and graduated from Ione High School. After his graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Paciic on the USS Colorado during WW II. After his discharge from the Navy he returned to Ione, then moved to Arlington, Ore., in 1947. Mel worked for the Bank of Oregon for 7 1/2 years, then operated a bread truck for 7 1/2 years. He moved to Pendleton for a time and to Milton-Freewater in 1964. On Aug. 1, 1968, he married Peggy Ringering in College Place. Peggy preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1993. He owned and operated the Union 76 Oil Distribu- tion for 25 years, retiring in 1988. On April 27, 1997, he married Jeanne Wilhelm in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Mel was a member of Amer- ican Legion Post #24, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4567, the USS Colorado Alumni, and a life member of BPOE #2146. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Brady, at the home; daughters Shannon Brady and her husband Kevin Harper, and Kelly Brady; stepdaugh- ters Nancy Brogan, Norene Carey, Phyllis Mow, Jane Briggs, Susan Alien, Linda Walker and Lisa Troxel; stepsons Jeff Frazier and Mike Wilhelm; a grandson, Kristopher Harper; and numerous stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, stepgreat-great-grandchil- dren, nieces and nephews. He was the best Dad and stepdad and loved by all. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a grandson, Kian Harper. Wahl, born September, 28, 1948, to Alvin and Ellen Palmer Wahl, passed away January 1, 2016. Robert, a long time resident of Fossil, Ore., was born and raised in the Walla Walla, Wash., area. Robert spent many years enjoying the outdoors as a wild- Wahl land ireighter, logger and ranch hand. He spent a number of years as a dispatcher for Jack Gray Transport and CSU Trans- portation in Arlington, Ore. An excellent marksman and horseman, Robert loved hunting, ishing, trapping, and viewing new countryside. Robert is survived by his daughter Amy Wahl Kuchen- reuther, grand- daughter Hayley Nelson, longtime companion and friend Della Thun- derbird, brother Stephen Wahl, and sister Alice Tellefson. Other family members include three aunts and many loving nieces and nephews, as well as extended family throughout the western states. Bettyjane Bruner was born May 25, 1933, at Detroit, Michigan, to parents Edwin and Dolly (Zimmer) Gilpin. She died Monday, April 16, 2016, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 82. She was raised in Camas, Washington, and graduated from high school in Washougal, Washington. She moved to Hermiston in 1950. She worked at the Crossroads Truck Stop as a cook and there she met the love of her life, Vernon Bruner, who was also a cook. They soon married and Bettyjane Bruner returned to school to become an accountant. They managed an apart- ment complex in Walla Walla, Washington, for many years. They returned to Hermiston and lived at Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility. She enjoyed attending church functions for the Baptist church. She was a quiet person who liked spending time with her friends. Bettyjane enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, cross stitching and knitting Verna (Palensky) Dittus Pilot Rock July 13, 1929-April 19, 2016 Verna (Palensky) Dittus was born July 13, 1929, to James and Leah Palensky in Fredonia, North Dakota. Verna Dittus passed away April 19, 2016, at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, Oregon. Verna Dittus was born at Fredonia, North Dakota, in the farm home of her grandpar- ents, August and Christine Kusler. Verna grew up in North Dakota. She attended various Dittus schools there and graduated from high school in Milnor, North Dakota. After graduation she attended Ellendale Normal School and attained a teaching certiicate. She taught for 13 years, teaching all eight grades in a county school. Verna married Clifford Dittus in Fredonia, N.D., October 18, 1953. They continued to farm on his family’s farm in North Dakota until 1981. At this time they sold the family farm to a niece and her husband, and moved to Pilot Rock, Oregon.
