Cecil Echo August 7, 1922-April 30, 2016 Hermiston October 28, 1937-April 27, 2016 Walla Walla April 3, 1924-April 29, 2016 Estephana (Estie) Correa Billing passed away quietly on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the age of 93. A lifelong resident of Echo, Oregon, she was born to Portuguese immigrants John and Estufania Correa on August 7, 1922, at their ranch next to the Umatilla River south of Echo. She was very proud of her Portu- guese heritage and passed that pride on to her children and grandchildren. Estie went through all 12 grades at the public school in Echo, where she was an accomplished Billing tennis player. Through her adult life she enjoyed gardening, following the Echo sports teams and watching all the political debates on TV. She swore this new breed of politicians would be the ruin of the country. She was on the Election Board, active with the Altar Society at St. Peter’s Church, the Echo Museum and Senior Citizens in Stanield. Estie married Curtis Billing on July 1, 1945, at St. Peter’s Church in Echo. Curt and Estie raised four chil- dren, Sharon Kirklin (Max), Scott Billing (Darlene), Sylvia Billing and Brenda Wright (Dwaine). She is survived by her four children, sister Frances Chevés (Sam) and brother-in-law Clayton Norton. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Brook, Jill, Anne, Jonathan, April and Charlene, eight great-grandchildren, ive great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis, her parents, sister Clara Norton, brother Jack Correa and son-in-law Dwaine Wright. There will be a Recitation of the Rosary on Wednesday, May 4th at 7 p.m. at Burns Mortuary and a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Angels in Hermiston on Thursday, May 5th at 10 a.m., followed by a graveside memorial at the Echo Cemetery. A meal will be provided for friends and family at Our Lady of Angels parish hall following the burial. Barrett passed away Sunday morning, April 24th, at home peacefully while in his sleep. Because of his faith in Jesus Christ, his family looks forward to being reunited with him at the resurrection. His passing was due to natural causes associated with his 86 years of age. Ray was born on August 25th, 1929, in Manastee, Mich., on the shores of Lake Michigan. He and his family lived in the area until he left to join the U.S. Barrett Army at the age of 17. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Sue Barrett, two older brothers, and one older sister. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lola (Lib) of Arlington, Ore.; three sons and daughters-in-law: Dan Barrett of Olympia, Wash., Dennis and Denyce Barrett of Spokane, Wash., and Mike and Linda Barrett of Centralia, Wash.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Cindi and Pat Davidson of Arlington, Ore., and Michelle and David Holmes of Sandy, Ore. Ray has nine grandchil- dren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-greats, and a sister, Barbara Knoll of LaPorte, Ind. Ray served our country in the U.S. Army for 26 years and distinguished himself in the Korean and Vietnam wars, earning a Silver Star, a Bronze Star for Valor with two oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, and numerous other awards and honors. After retiring in the early ’70’s, Ray was a barber, a supervisor for a hardware chain, and in 1978 purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware store in Arlington, Ore., where he lived out his life. In Arlington, Ray served the community on the local school board, as a port commissioner, and justice of the peace. He enjoyed golf, collecting, custom wood working, ishing and hunting, and travel. With family in Michigan, North Carolina and Arizona, Ray made many cross-country trips. Ray loved his wife passionately and his involve- ment in the lives of his children and grandchildren was one of his greatest joys. He will be sorely missed by his wife, all of his kids and grandkids, and the many nieces and nephews who have always held Ray in the highest esteem. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Arlington, Ore., on Saturday, May 7 beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a graveside cere- mony with military honors at the Arlington Cemetery. A potluck is to follow. In lieu of lowers, the family asks that contribu- tions be made to the CSM Ray Barrett Memorial Fund of the Bobcats Association, recently founded to assist the families of Bobcat members killed in action. Girl Scouts set introductory event HERMISTON — Girls in kindergarten through the ifth grade are invited to attend a tea party with the Girl Scouts to learn more about the organization. Page 7A Robert H. “Bob” Gilcher, of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on October 28, 1937, in Longview, Washington, to parents Fredrick and Bertha Scrogin Gilcher. He died on April 27, 2016, in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 78 years. Bob was raised and attended schools in Longview, Washington, until the 10th grade when he moved to Umatilla, Oregon. He graduated from Umatilla High School in the class of 1955. Bob was united in marriage Gilcher to Neva Ann Nobles on April 6, 1956, in Hermiston, Oregon. He went to work for Nalley’s Potato Chip and they lived in Seattle and Aberdeen, Washington, and Hermiston, Oregon. They moved to Yakima, Wash- ington, and raised their family. Bob owned Yakima Valley Cabinets, was a partner in the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, worked for Noel Foods, and spent the last 10 years of his working career as the owner of the Jack Pot convenience store. He retired in 1999 and moved to Hermiston, Oregon, where they have lived since. Bob was an active member of the Hermiston Church of the Nazarene and the Umatilla High School Alumni. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, wood- working, playing cards, traveling, and was an avid reader. Bob perfected his scroll saw skills with his RBI Hawk and gifted many family and friends his unique art work. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Neva Ann Gilcher, Hermiston, Ore.; daughters Sandra Gilcher Kimmel and her husband Gary, Portland, Ore., and Gail Andreas, Tri-Cities, Wash.; sons Dan Gilcher and his wife Carol and Steve Gilcher and his wife Sheila, all of Yakima, Wash.; sister Gerry Hamar, Klamath Falls, Ore.; sister- in-law Earlene Gilcher, Herm- iston, Ore.; grand- children Jerod (Sarah), Karl, Keith (Vanessa) and Daniel; great-grand- children Hailey, Madelyn, Maisy, Ainsley, Eden and Blythe, and one on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; ive brothers: Dorsey, Jack, Nick, Dan and Glen; and sisters Miriam, Barbara and Pat.
