Copelan Ross, 74, of Pend-
leton (Rieth), OR, passed
away in her home on Monday,
April 25, 2016,
surrounded by her
husband of 37 years,
Frank Ross, and her
three children.
Virginia was born
August 11, 1941 in
Los Angeles, CA,
graduated
from
high school in Santa
Clara, CA, and
earned an associ-
ate’s degree in busi- Ross
ness administration
from College of the Siskiyous
in Weed, CA. She taught her
children the value of hard
work whether as a waitress,
a cashier at Safeway, a long
haul truck driver, or as a cook
at St. Anthony Hospital and
the Umatilla County Jail.
Virginia never knew a
stranger and treated all people
she met with respect. She
was passionate about music
and was always listening
or singing along. She sang
with the Sweet Adelines in
Seattle, WA, in the choir at
College of the Siskiyous in
Weed, CA, with the Oregon
East Symphony and Chorale
in Pendleton, OR, and at
many karaoke venues.
Virginia also loved to travel
and never passed up an
opportunity for adventure.
She visited Scotland, Brazil,
Italy, Germany and nearly all
50 U.S. states.
She was preceded in
death by her parents Les and
Maxine Carter and Ernest
and Lou Copelan.

her
husband,
Frank
Ross,
whom she married Feb. 14,
1979 in Grenada,
CA, her three
children:

Samantha Ball and
Hunter Cook of Umatilla
High School have been
awarded Oregon State
University (OSU) College
of Business Future Business
Leaders scholarships. The
scholarships are awarded
each year to high-achieving
high school juniors who
are interested in pursuing
an undergraduate business
degree at OSU after they
graduate from high school.
If the students attend OSU,
they will receive the $1,000
scholarship, renewable for
four years.
The qualiications for the
scholarship include: current
high school junior attending
high school in Oregon;
graduate before September
2017; current cumulative

12:23 a.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice and the
Irrigon ambulance responded to an Irrigon home for a man who
took seven Iburprophin tablets of 600 milligrams each.
5:47 a.m. - Someone used a no trespassing sign to pry open
the window to a laundry room at Spruce Village Apartments, 625
N.W. Spruce St., Hermiston. The trespasser then broke into the
coin machine and stole the money.
5:53 a.m. - A Pendleton woman told a 9-1-1 dispatcher she
believed her child’s father threw a brick through the back window
of her boyfriend’s vehicle at her home on Southwest 19th Street.
5:55 a.m. - A jogger in Hermiston reported grafiti on the
Riverfront Park sign and 18 more spots on the Oxbow Trail.
7:58 a.m. - Pilot Rock police received a report that someone
the past two weekends vandalized the restrooms at the city park.
10:02 a.m. - A woman asked Pendleton police for advice
on not letting an acquaintance park his motorcycle in her yard
because he does not want it repossessed.
10:36 a.m. - An aggressive pit bull dog ran at large through the
neighborhood at Southwest Park Lane, Pendleton.
11:50 a.m. - A gentlemen walked into the Hermiston ire station
to report a large burn on Northeast 10th Street. He stated they
were burning construction material from another location and this
is a common occurrence at this residence.
Fireighters arrived at the home to a pile of tree limbs, grass
clippings and some old lumber. The property owner said he
has an agreement with a local lawn care place to allow them
to dump on the property behind the home. Three company
employees tended to the ire, and one employee told ireighters
they normally only dump lawn clippings and tree trimmings, but
sometimes they do clean up other debris. Tuesday they were
burning an old pump house they had torn out.
Fireighters advised the property owner the burn policy was
intended for homeowners to burn their own yard debris and did
not allow a company to burn other debris on his property. He
received a copy of the city’s burn regulations.
11:54 a.m. - An Adams man on North Blaine Street told law
enforcement his neighbor’s bird dog was at his home again and
chasing his chickens. He said he tied the dog in his carport. The
Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice sent a deputy, who warned the
dog owner.
12:01 p.m. - A Hermiston woman on Northeast McAllister Lane
reported her neighbor’s dog came over on Saturday and killed
nine of her ducks. The dog has killed 21 to date. She asked to
speak with someone with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Ofice.
12:01 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice received a
request to check on the welfare of an alternative school student
whose mother was using methamphetamine and was violent.
12:20 p.m. - A man reported his white 1993 Ford Escort
ran out of gas in the morning on Interstate 84 so he left it near
milepost 171. But when he came back, it was gone.
2:04 p.m. - A livestock owner reported someone stole two
of his calves about two weeks ago from his property on North
Ott Road, Hermiston, and he heard there are a “whole bunch of
calves” at 10th Street and Elm Avenue.
3:04 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Ofice received a
report about a domestic violence survivor at a Boardman health
clinic. The case is under investigation.
3:26 p.m. - A driver ran the stop sign at Eastside and Birch
Creek roads, Milton-Freewater, another man shook his ist at the
driver, who then chased the ist shaker’s vehicle before turning off.
3:35 p.m. - A Pendleton resident told police he gets harassing
phone calls from 812-472-4604, and when he answers a male
with an accent starts cursing at him. He said he did not need an
oficer and he has not told his parents about the calls.
3:52 p.m. - A Umatilla business reported a woman using
an oxygen bottle was ”freaking out” and “verbally threatening
everyone” then went outside.
7:21 p.m. - A Boardman caller reported her boyfriend broke
her computer and phone.
7:36 p.m. - Two vehicles collided in the parking lot at the
Hermiston Safeway.
8:57 p.m. - A Pendleton man told an emergency dispatcher
he arrived at his home on Southeast Byers Place and may have
interrupted a burglary. Someone ransacked his house, he said,
and he could not ind his weapons anywhere.
10:53 p.m. - A Pendleton ambulance took a woman to the
hospital from Southeast Seventh Street and Court Avenue after
she fell, hit her head and was bleeding.
10:33 p.m. - Someone hiding behind anonymity sent
a Hermiston-area woman “nasty pictures of her and her
boyfriend” to her cellphone and threatened to put the pictures
on the internet.
