SPORTS Thursday, April 21, 2016 East Oregonian Page 3B Walker pitches Mariners past Indians for victory By STEVE HERRICK Associated Press CLEVELAND — Taijuan Walker has been at his best against the Cleveland Indians. Walker kept up his run of dominance against the Indians, allowing just an unearned run over six innings in the Seattle Mariners’ 2-1 win on Wednesday night. Walker (1-0) held Cleve- land to three hits and struck out six in defeating the Indians for the third time in a year. The right-hander beat Cleveland twice last season and has allowed one earned run in 20 innings over three appearances. “It seemed like they were being really aggressive and then once they start being aggressive, I can really use my off-speed pitches and keep them off-balance and kind of pitch them backwards a little bit,” Walker said. Norichika Aoki had a two-run triple in the second, which Walker and three MLB Seattle 2 Cleveland 1 Seattle Mar- iners pitcher Taijuan Walk- er delivers to Cleveland Indians Fran- cisco Lindor during the first inning inning of Wednesday’s game in Cleveland. Walker, who threw 110 pitches, was pulled for Joel Peralta after the sixth despite his best efforts to avoid manager Scott Servais in the dugout. “I was trying to hide,” Walker said. “I’m always trying to get as many (innings) as I can.” “Sometimes you just let it rip and he certainly was letting it go tonight,” Servais said. “It’s impressive. He has the ability to make adjustments and manipulate the ball a little bit when he needs to and get it in the strike zone, in a good spot in the strike zone.” Danny Salazar (2-1) allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings, but his mistake to Aoki cost him the game. Salazar struck out seven and didn’t give up a hit after Aoki’s triple. The right-hander retired 11 straight and 16 of the ¿nal 1 he faced. Salazar has a 1.47 ERA in three starts. Steve Cishek, the Mariners’ third reliever, pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Lind singled and Chris Iannetta walked to start the second. Salazar retired the next two batters, but Aoki sent a hard grounder past ¿rst baseman Mike Napoli that rolled into the corner to score both runners. Cleveland’s only threat came in the third. Juan Uribe led off with a double but was caught in a rundown and tagged out trying for third on Tyler Naquin’s ground ball to the mound. Naquin took third when Lind was charged with an error after he couldn’t handle Jose Ramirez’s ground ball near the bag at ¿rst. .ipnis’ Àyball to center scored Naquin. Aoki’s triple over the ¿rst base bag was enough for the Mariners to win despite scoring three runs or fewer for the 10th time in 14 games. Seattle is 2-5 in one-run games. “We needed one and we got one,” Servais said of the clutch hit. “It was huge. We were due for one, a big two-out hit.” Walker had no walks but did hit a batter. He had no-de- cisions in his ¿rst two starts, pitching six innings in each. NBA Playoffs LeBron scores 27, Cavs take 2-0 lead on Pistons Associated Press CLEVELAND — LeBron James scored 27 points, J.R. Smith made seven of Cleve- land's NBA playoff record- tying 20 3-pointers, and the Cavaliers opened a 2-0 lead in their series with a 107-90 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. The top-seeded Cavs put away the up-and-coming Pistons in the third quarter, outscoring them 27-15 to protect home-court advantage. There was nothing easy about their ¿rst two wins and the Cavs, favored to win the Eastern Conference and return to the ¿nals, will have their work cut out when the best-of-seven series resumes on Friday night at Detroit. Kyrie Irving added 22 points for Cleveland, which went 20 of 3 on 3s and tied the postseason record shared by Golden State (2015), Dallas (2011) and Seattle (1996). Andre Drummond scored 20 and Reggie Jackson 14 for the Pistons, who have lost 10 straight playoff games against Cleveland. Drummond was just 4 of 16 from the line. Smith's outside shooting was a welcomed addition for the Cavs, who got 1 points from James, Irving and Kevin Love in Game 1 but can't count on that production from them every time. Smith scored only nine points in the opener, but that didn't deter him from ¿ring away and he ¿nished 7 of 11 from long range. The Cavs are counting on Smith, who had a rough postseason last year, when he was suspended in the ¿rst round and shot poorly in the NBA Finals. Cleveland made six 3s in the third when it twisted a ¿ve-point de¿cit into a 14-point lead. The biggest 3 in the spurt came from James, who after knocking down his shot, raised three ¿ngers on both hands while standing just a few feet away from Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy. It was some payback for James, who had refused to get caught up in a verbal battle between games with Van Gundy. Detroit's talkative coached had complained during Game 1 that James got preferential treatment, earning him a 25,000 ¿ne by the NBA. MIAMI 115, CHAR- LOTTE 103 — At Miami, Only a week ago the Miami Heat could not score. A ¿ve-point quarter in the season ¿nale at Boston was how they sputtered into the postseason, looking nothing like a contender. It was an aberration. Dwyane Wade scored 2 points, Hassan Whiteside was for from the ¿eld and ¿nished with 17 points, and the Heat beat the Char- lotte Hornets 115-103 on Wednesday night to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference ¿rst-round series. Goran Dragic scored 1 points, Luol Deng ¿nished with 16 and Josh Richardson added 15 for Miami, which had 72 points by halftime and never trailed in the second half. Whiteside added 13 rebounds and is now shooting 17 for 19 in his postseason series debut. Kemba Walker scored 29 for Charlotte, needing 29 shots to get there. Al Jefferson had 25 on 12-for-17 shooting off the bench, Courtney Lee added 12 and Jeremy Lin had 11 for Charlotte — which has dropped 12 straight post- season contests.
