8:10 a.m. - Two dogs belonging to a Weston resident fell
victim in the last few months to the neighbors’ Boerboel, or
South African Mastiff, a powerful breed of dog that can grow
to 200 pounds. The owner of the dead dogs told the Umatilla
County Sheriff’s Of¿ce the neighbors agreed to keep the
Boerboel at home, but then let it back out. The caller also was
concerned for his grandchildren because of the large dog.
8:38 a.m. - A woman on Walla Walla River Road, Milton-
Freewater, reported a truck from Konen Rock Products of
Milton-Freewater hit and killed her dog.
8:44 a.m. - An employee of O’Reilly Auto Parts, 102 S.W.
20th St., Pendleton, drew ire from a homeless man after asking
him to leave from behind the building. The employee called
police to deal with the man.
9:09 a.m. - A Hermiston woman told Hermiston police
someone keeps reporting welfare checks on her and she would
like them to stop.
9:59 a.m. - An employee of Oxford Suites, Hermiston, found
suspicious items left in a room, possibly drugs. The employee
asked an of¿cer to pick it up.
11:48 a.m. - An Athena woman asked the Umatilla County
Sheriff’s Of¿ce to trespass a squatter on her property on South
Second Street. She said her husband told the man he could
store a motor home in December 2015 but not live in it. The man
then brought his pickup to the location, built a ¿re pit and started
living in the motor home. Now she wanted him off the property.
12:22 p.m. - A thief cut the fuel lines on a van and
stole fuel at Umatilla Morrow Head Start, 1850 Key Blvd.,
Milton-Freewater.
12:30 p.m. - Twelve mailboxes were damaged on Sunland
Avenue in Hermiston.
12:34 p.m. - Someone stole a battery from a vehicle
belonging to a woman on East Van Buren Street, Athena. She
also reported someone in November 2015 entered her vehicle
and stole keys, and she believed the person who has those
keys stole the battery.
1:24 p.m. - The owner of a recreational vehicle reported
someone stole its stabilizer brackets while in storage on the
1800 block of Westgate, Pendleton.
2:13 p.m. - Employers at the rock quarry on County Line
Road, Hermiston, caught an employee stealing but did not ¿re
him. More issues came up, though, and now the employee is
threatening his boss with physical violence. The employers
asked the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Of¿ce to check in around
3:30 p.m., when the employee will receive his ¿nal check.
3:04 p.m. - Vehicles ran over a box of 7-mm riÀe rounds in
the road on Southwest Court Avenue, Pendleton, near Mazatlan
Mexican Restaurant, and a caller asked police to come and
remove them.
3:12 p.m. - An Irrigon man told law enforcement his
soon-to-be ex-wife took his vehicle to Washington without his
permission and wrecked it.
3:16 p.m. - A woman reported her girlfriend’s teenage son
keeps coming home with items he could be stealing, including a
generator, two skateboards and a Àat screen TV.
3:40 p.m. - A Pendleton man on Southeast Alexander Place
asked police how he could free his cat trapped in a vacant
house.
4:07 p.m. - A resident of Southwest 10th Place in Hermiston
said a man came up to the house, assaulted the resident “for no
reason” and “tore up” the front room.
4:22 p.m. - Pendleton schools changed the location of a
bus stop to the 3500 block of Westgate, a father reported, and
the owner of the business there constantly harasses and yells
at his children. He said he talked with the owner, but that went
nowhere, and asked for an of¿cer’s advice.
5:33 p.m. - A city of Hermiston truck was reported moving by
itself and the horn going off on Northeast Fourth Street.
8:14 p.m. - A caller reported this to the Morrow County
Sheriff’s Of¿ce: A FedEx driver around 2-2:30 p.m. found a man
in a ditch, and the driver and the caller took the man’s keys
because “they could tell he was all messed up,” but did not know
if alcohol, drugs or both did the messing. The caller took off to
get help, and the impaired man wrestled with the FedEx driver,
got his keys and “took off Àying down the road.”

Afton Fay Kendall, age
79, of Hermiston, Oregon,
passed away Tuesday,
March 22 from complica-
tions of a long battle with
diabetes. She spent the
last two years of her life
in Boise, Idaho, with her
daughter Cami.
On
Easter
Sunday, April 12,
1946, a beautiful
little bunny was
born in La Grande,
Oregon, to Stuart
A.
and
Ellen
E.
Sanderson
(Arnoldus). Afton
was a straight A
student and an
accomplished
vocalist
and Kendall
violinist. At age
17, she was the
youngest person to become
a member of the Grande
Ronde Symphony with
which she toured Europe.
Afton was a proud
woman who raised her two
daughters in La Grande,
without spousal support
or public assistance. She
never took a day off or
vacation from work in order
to provide for her family.
Afton was known to repair
her own television and ¿[
her car with only a hairpin.
After moving to Herm-
iston, Afton worked in the
of¿ce of Good Samaritan
Nursing Home. Later she
was the manager of an
apartment comple[ for
senior citizens.
St. Patrick’s Day was
always special. It was when
Afton met the love of her life,
Sergeant Dale E. Kendall,
on her ¿rst and only blind
date. They were married
in September of 1980 and
were able to celebrate their
25th wedding anniversary
before his passing
in 2006.
Even in the
last year of her
life, despite health
challenges, Afton
would always light
up the lives of
everyone she met
with her smile and
pleasant “Hello.”
She is survived
by her daughters
Cami Horton and
Marteen
Ward;
sisters Pam Hamilton and
Penny Broyles; grand-
daughters Kristen Venable,
Holly Ward and Melissa
Ward; stepchildren Dalene
Faire, Lori Wise and Andy
Kendall; and nephew and
nieces Stephan Hamilton,
Erika Yzaguirre and Lisa
Hernandez.
The
celebration
of
Afton’s life will be held at
Burns Mortuary of Herm-
iston, Oregon, on Saturday,
May 14 at 10:00 a.m.
followed by a graveside
service at Hermiston Ceme-
tery, and a brunch at O[ford
Suites.

Craig William Jones, 61,
of Arlington died Thursday,
April 14, 2016, at Mid-Co-
lumbia Medical Center in
The Dalles. A memorial
service will be held on
Saturday, April 23, 2016,
at 11 a.m. at the Arlington
Cemetery.
He was born on June 17,
1954, at Portland, Oregon,
to Laurence and Alice
Morrow Jones. He was the
oldest of ¿ve children. He
attended Woodstock Grade
School and Cleveland High
School, where he graduated.
After high school he spent
two years at Clackamas
Community College.
Craig lived in Portland,
Bend, Colton and Arlington,
Oregon.
He enjoyed climbing and
was a longtime member of
the Mazamas, climbing most
mountains in the Northwest,
both with his father and
alone. Craig was also an avid
skier, hunter, marksman and
gun enthusiast.
In July 1985 he married
Susan Maull in Vancouver,
Washington. The couple
made their home in
Arlington.
Survivors include his
wife Susan; mother Alice
Jones of Arlington; sister
Kris Petersen of La Grande;
brother Randy Jones and his
wife Caterina of Portland;
brother Steven Jones and his
wife Margo of Arlington;
sister Leslie Wetherell and
her husband Tadd, also of
Arlington; and numerous
aunts, cousins, nieces and
nephews.
