BUCKAROOS: Pendleton hitters tee off TENNIS: HHS resilient

through the ¿rst two frames. But as
Pendleton came back through the
batting order in the third inning,
things began to click.
Alexis Morrison began the inning
with a soft single up the middle and
one pitch later was moved to second
base on a sacri¿ce bunt by Lauren
Richards. Following that, Ellie
Richards stepped to the plate and
on a 1-2 pitch crushed a double that
rolled all the way to the fence in left
¿eld to score Morrison for the early
1-0 lead.
Pendleton scored four more
times in the inning with the help of
a pair of RBI doubles from Peyton
Hergert and Maddy Parker to grab
a 5-0 advantage. All nine Buckaroo
batters came to the plate in the
inning, and Cary said he was happy
to see the team settle down at the
plate and ¿nd their groove.
“We were a little impatient early
in the game ... we were out in front a
lot but we made our adjustments and
were a little more patient and it paid
off,” he said.
In the fourth inning, Kalan
McGlothan showed off her power as
she crushed a belt-high fastball from
Copeland over the center ¿elder’s
head and off the fence to score a
pair of runs and bump the Pendleton
lead to 7-0. And in the ¿fth inning,
the Buckaroos ¿nished it off with a
two-RBI double off the bat of Ellie
Richards and an RBI single up the
middle from Hergert to bump the
lead to 10-0 and end the game.
It was a rough game for the
Mac-Hi (11-3, 2-0 GOL) pitchers,
as the usually-reliable Copeland
allowed nine hits, seven runs, and
two walks over four innings with
six strikeouts, and Sydney Earls
allowed three runs on three hits
with two walks in her only inning
of relief.
It was a bit of revenge for the
Buckaroos, as the Pioneers got the
best of Pendleton twice during the
2015 season with 8-1 and 6-5 defeats.
Pendleton’s Ellie Richards said that
she was happy to get some of that
revenge, but also to see the team come
together against a really good team.
“I think our team got the hits
when we needed them,” said Rich-

ards, who ¿nished 3-3 at the plate
with three RBI and two runs scored.
“I think it’s a huge con¿dence boost
for our team and it was a good win
going into league play.”

dogs were going to be too much
for the Buckaroos on this day.
“We only lost one senior
last year, so we’ve got a lot of
experience that’s back,” said
Hermiston coach Shann West.
“I know Pendleton’s young this
year, they’ve only got one senior,
so that helps us.”
“I’ve got ¿ve ¿rst-year players
this year, so it’s a real learning
experience,” said Pendleton
coach Chris Holdman. “It’s a
good experience for them to see
this competition halfway through
the season, so then they know
what to expect when they get to
districts and they see all the top
schools from the Bend area.”
The closest match of the day
was at No. 2 singles where Aiden
Prewitt needed a 10-4 win in a
tiebreaker to beat Peter Wallace
and complete the sweep.
Overall, Hermiston outscored
Pendleton in games 70-17. The
only Buckaroo other than Wallace
to win a game in each set was No.
1 singles player Henry Holdman.
Jacob Snell defeated Holdman
6-1, 6-1, but it was a closer match
than it looks on paper.
“We both played well, (Snell)
just beat me on a few extra deuce
points,” Holdman said. “There
was only three or four games we
didn’t go to deuce. It was a good
match.”
It was Holdman’s ¿rst loss
of the season, and Snell also has
only one loss in No. 1 singles
action.
“I think my forehands were
doing good and my backhands
are getting better,” Snell said. “I
wish I returned a little bit better
and served a lot better. My serves
weren’t as good as I think they
should be right now. I need to get
a little more consistent. I have too
many double faults.”
“He’s got a lot of skill and he
puts in a lot of time,” West said of
Snell. “It’s a realistic possibility
for him to have a chance to go
to state. If he’s put in the right
position and he’s playing well, so
that’s kind of our goal for him.”
Hermiston’s next match is
Thursday when it hosts Hood
River at 4 p.m. Pendleton will be
at The Dalles on Thursday at the
same time.

HERMISTON 7, PEND-
LETON 0 — At Hermiston,
except for a couple of ¿rst-set
losses, the Bulldogs cruised to a
league win over rival Pendleton
on Tuesday.
The only matches to not end
in straight sets were the bookend
singles matches won by Katelyn
Millard and Sidney Moore.
Millard rallied from a 6-2 loss
to Pendleton’s Jenna Senter to
win 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 match.
Moore bounced back from a 6-3
loss to beat Julia Livingston 6-3,
6-3.
“They were really able to turn
it around and improve their game
to show that mental toughness is
getting better for us,” said Herm-
iston coach Jason Sivey.
Hermiston’s doubles teams
were especially dominant and
outscored Pendleton 36-4 in
games won.
Hermiston will be on the road
for its next match on Thursday at
Hood River at 4 p.m. Pendleton
will host The Dalles on Thursday
at 4 p.m. at West Hills.

STANFIELD
11,
TRI-CITIES PREP 3 — At
Pasco, an eight-run outburst
in the ¿nal two innings lifted
the Tigers to a non-league
win on Tuesday.
Leading 3-2 with runners
on the corners and one
out in the top of the sixth,
Stan¿eld (12-1) looked to
get an insurance run with
some small ball. Tri-Cities
Prep committed an error on
Adrian Renner’s bunt and
Makiah Blankenship scored
the eventual game-winner.
Thyler Monkus then bunted
his way on and Tony Flores
followed with a two-RBI
single.
An error allowed another
Stan¿eld run before the
inning was up and Tri-Cities
Prep would only get one of
those runs back.
Brody Woods started on
the mound and struck out
seven, walked three and
allowed two runs on two
hits in ¿ve complete innings.
Flores pitched the sixth and
allowed one run on one hit,
and Ryan Bailey threw a
scoreless seventh to close out
the win.
Monkus led the offense
going 4 for 5 with one RBI
and four runs. Flores (3 for 5)
added two RBI and two runs,
and Bailey (2 for 4) drove in
three.
Stan¿eld will return to
league play on Friday when
it hosts Elgin for a double-
header that starts at 3 p.m. at
Madigan Field.

SUMMIT 331, PEND-
LETON 366 — At Bend,
a double bogey on the
¿nal hole cost Pendleton’s
Haley Greb the title at the
Awbrey Glen Tournament on
Tuesday.
Summit’s Olivie Loberg
shot par on hole No. 18 and
won by one stroke with a 76.
Greb had four birdies in her
round but Loberg had three
birdies and an eagle on the
par-4 No. 5 hole.
Summit won the team
title with 331 and Bend was
second with 364.
Pendleton was third with
a 366 and Shelby Greb took
¿fth overall with an 84.
Megan George (101),
McKenna Pratt (104) and
Rylee Harris (131) completed
Pendleton’s scores.
“It was a very hard
course,” said Pendleton
coach Terry Prouse. “There
were very interesting holes
and it’s kind of hard to know
where to go if you hadn’t
played it before.”
Pendleton’s next round
is Monday at Bend Country
Club.
